An American newspaper reveals details of the Swiss mediation between Washington and Tehran

Political | 04:36 - 11/11/2020

Baghdad - Mawazine News
, The American Wall Street Journal published a report highlighting the role Switzerland has played in preventing the escalation of the conflict between the United States and Iran into an armed conflict.
The report quoted US officials as confirming that the administration of US President Donald Trump, hours after the assassination of the commander of the "Quds Force" in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Qassem Soleimani, in Iraq, delivered a message to the Iranian side, through the Swiss embassy in Tehran, urging him to "avoid escalation" .
US and Swiss officials confirmed that Switzerland's ambassador to Tehran, Marcus Leitner, the 53-year-old veteran diplomat, had personally delivered that message to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who, according to an official familiar with the matter, expressed his anger at the assassination of Soleimani, and described His American counterpart, Mike Pompeo, is "thug" and said that "the United States is the source of all problems"
In the following days, the White House and the Iranian leadership exchanged, through the Swiss ambassador, other messages that officials of the two parties described as "more balanced" than the fiery statements that Trump and Zarif exchanged via Twitter.
The newspaper sources pointed out that this indirect dialogue, which took place in an atmosphere of tense reservation, allowed both parties to talk openly about their positions and "avoid mistakes", according to US officials.
A senior American official acknowledged to the newspaper that the Swiss side "played a useful and reliable role that both sides value," while an Iranian official said that the Swiss embassy gives Tehran and Washington "a desired bridge to communicate, when the other was burned."
Swiss officials assured the newspaper that their country's embassy delivered messages from the United States to the leadership of Iran through a private encrypted fax machine located inside a closed room, which only the most senior embassy officials have access to.
This agency gives the embassy direct communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Iran and the country's embassy in Washington.
The newspaper pointed out that the Swiss ambassador regularly visits Washington to hold meetings on Iran behind closed doors with senior officials in the Pentagon, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Services.

Trump: Iraqi officials do not demand the withdrawal of US forces in private sessions

US President Donald Trump stressed that the Iraqi government must pay money to American taxpayers if it wanted to withdraw US forces from there, while he indicated that the attack targeting Qasim Soleimani prevented another "Benghazi" from occurring.

"By killing Soleimani, we foiled a scheme that the Quds Force commander intended to implement by targeting American targets abroad," he said in an interview with US Fox News.

In response to a question about what those targets are, he said, "I can reveal that they were, according to my opinion, four embassies, possibly the embassy in Baghdad. There are other possibilities such as military bases and other things as well," noting that "the embassy in Baghdad was at the forefront of those goals ".

He continued, "The scene of the demonstrators who surrounded the embassy and tried to enter it, led me to call the military officials who told them that we do not want a similar operation to storm the American consulate in Benghazi," explaining, "We would have seen another Benghazi if we did not prevent this from happening."

Trump stressed that "the nuclear agreement signed with Iran during the term of former President Barack Obama allowed Tehran to obtain 150 billion dollars that it used to finance terrorist activities in Yemen and Syria, and accused the Obama administration that it paid cash to Iran 1.8 billion dollars."

On Thursday, the US President told reporters that Soleimani was assassinated because he was targeting the US embassy in Baghdad.

The US administration has repeatedly stressed that the strike was a self-defense to prevent what it described as an "imminent threat" against US interests and forces.

Earlier on Friday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters, "We had specific information about an imminent threat, including attacks on American embassies."

Trump said during the interview that he "did not inform Congress leaders of the process in advance for fear of leaks from them."

During the interview, Trump was asked if the Iraqi response to Soleimani's strike might lead to the departure of US forces in Iraq, and he said, "I have no problem with that."

On the calls of Iraqi officials to start planning for the withdrawal of the American forces from Iraq, he said, "This is what the Iraqis say publicly, but they do not say that in private sessions."

He added, "We created in Iraq one of the most expensive airport installations in the world. If we leave, they (the Iraqis) should pay money for that." He pointed out that "countries like Saudi Arabia and South Korea pay millions of dollars for the deployment of American soldiers there."

"I told the kingdom that they have to pay money to deploy more soldiers, and they have already put a billion dollars into a bank account," he said.

On the way in which money can be raised from the Iraqis, Trump said, "We have a lot of their money, there is $ 35 billion in an account."

President Trump considered that the conditions in the Middle East under his administration became "more tame", as ISIS was eliminated and tens of thousands of its fighters were imprisoned.

The Iranian agency "Fars" revealed the truth of what some media and activists on social media reported about the departure of President Hassan Rouhani from his position, against the background of the crisis of the downing of the Ukrainian passenger plane.

The semi-official agency quoted a source in the Iranian government as confirming that the reports that were received, on Friday evening, that Rouhani had submitted the resignation were not valid, as he pointed out that the Iranian president was in his office since this morning, Saturday, and he was the one who issued the condolence statement regarding the Ukrainian plane disaster Killed 176 people.

Iran admitted this morning that it had shot down the Ukrainian plane "Boeing 737-800" by mistake, while flying over a sensitive military area of the Revolutionary Guard, shortly after taking off from Tehran airport, and Rouhani described this incident as "a great tragedy and an unforgivable error". Washington Post reported that an American strike targeted another Iranian leader in Yemen on the night of the killing of Iranian Revolutionary Guards Commander Qassem Soleimani, but it did not succeed in killing him.

The strike targeted, according to the newspaper, "Abd al-Ridha Shahlahai, a financier and chief commander of the Iranian Quds Force operating in Yemen ."

The officials said, "The Pentagon leaders were observing the two strikes and discussed the announcement of them together, in case things went well."

Last month, the US State Department offered a $ 15 million reward for information that leads to Shahla.

The announcement states that Shahlai is based in Yemen and has "a long history of participating in attacks targeting the United States and our allies, including in the 2011 plot against the Saudi ambassador" in an Italian restaurant in Washington .

American officials say that "Shahla, who was born approximately in 1957, is linked to attacks against American forces in Iraq , including a sophisticated raid in which five American soldiers were kidnapped in 2007 and killed in Karbala ."

The Trump administration warned Iraq this week that it risks losing access to a critical government bank account if Baghdad kicks out American forces following the U.S. airstrike that killed a top Iranian general, according to Iraqi officials.

The State Department warned that the U.S. could shut down Iraq’s access to the country’s central bank account held at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, a move that could jolt Iraq’s already shaky economy, the officials said.

It is expected that the Central Bank of Iraq will face significant daily operational pressures in its management of the currency auction in order to continue to maintain the stability of the exchange rate as much as possible and prevent significant fluctuations in it that could lead to instability of the economy and affect the purchasing power of individuals.

The ethnic economy in general will face more pressure in the year 2020, due to the political tensions in the country and represented with the popular protests in late 2019, which culminated in the death of Soleimani and the engineer (with Baghdad airport operation at the hands of the American forces is familiar this year 2020, which portends a lot of pressure on the economy ethnicity, mainly burdened by problems of mismanagement, corruption and dependence excessive single resource.

The Central Bank of Iraq is expected to face operational pressures a large daily basis in his administration did not increase the currency in order to continue the preservation the exchange rate should be stabilized whenever possible and prevent fluctuations large in it can lead to economic instability and be affected the purchasing power of individuals.

After the Central Bank witnessed a stable stage in the exchange rate for the period (2017 - 2019), as there were no fluctuations between the official exchange rate and the market only within the limits of 1% and the exchange rate stabilized at 1200 dinar per dollar, which is the target price, but the protests popularity in the central and southern regions in late 2019 and the inflection acute scene in the beginning of the year 2020 as a result of Soleimani's death and the engineer, entering into a series of threats and mutual promises the air strikes on the ethnic scene, all this heralds fears return to the era of the existence of two exchange rates, both at the grassroots level or at the level of elites and academics.

Among the most important factors that are expected to be a stress factor on the Central Bank during the coming period:

1- The decrease in the dollar prices against foreign currencies as a result of the development geopolitics in the Middle East, and the effects of decline have continued Omani Rial exchange rate, which creates pressure on demande external to the dollar and speculation it.

2- pessimistic expectations that increase the demand for dollars and escape of the dinar.

3- Increase the daily speculation operations on the dollar internally; in order to achieve quick profits, after the ignition (post crisis Soleimani), who is expected to witness escalatory events and statements on a daily level.

4- Weak confidence in the existence of a quick exit from (Post-Sulaymani crisis) raging in the region.

5- Expectations of uncertainties in the political process will continue within the the race between the different parties and the failure to formulate common positions develop the ethnic interest is in front of it.

The Central Bank of Iraq is possible in the short term the average will continue to maintain the stability of the exchange rate the dinar is against the dollar, and the market is not expected to see any improvement excessively between the official and market exchange rates, due to its retention with high reserves it can be gradually lost in exchange for conservation exchange rate, what can be called (reserve versus exchange), as not the central bank is expected to restrict its dollar reserves (restriction) the offer (in front of the request continued to be requested, especially since the horizon is not witnessed a crisis that leads to low oil prices globally.

Certainly, the factors mentioned above will lead to fleeing the Iraqi dinar toward the dollar or other assets then, the management of the more currency will again be in a position to defend a price to spend in front of the public instead of the current relaxation position, this is also on the pressures that the executive powers can exert legislative will have to provide more liquidity in order to meet the requirements the political and military expected against the background of the current crisis, and the most dangerous part of these requirements should be outside the official budget frameworks and their numbers, and the central bank had to fulfill them, which could mean payment toward a return to more politicization of the central bank's policy and breaking its independence again, which is reminiscent of how long this wall was demolished independence in the years (2015-2017) following the double shock (Low oil prices and ISIS entry), as the size of borrowing has reached the government from the central bank to 16 trillion ethnic dinars, overlooked the government party for the rest of it.

The Iranian Staff announced, on Saturday, the injury of the ill-fated Ukrainian plane that fell near the Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran by mistake as a result of its approaching one of the sensitive centers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.

In a military statement, the Iranian Staff said that the Ukrainian plane that crashed in Iran last week flew near a sensitive military zone. The statement pointed out that the plane entered the wrong way in a circle of "hostile target" after it approached a "sensitive military post" of the Revolutionary Guards, noting that the army was at those moments in "the highest levels of alert" amid the recent escalating tensions with the United States.

The statement continued: "In such a case, and in light of what happened, and because of a human error and in an unintended manner the plane was struck ... We offer our apologies for what happened." The statement stressed that the parties responsible for this will be held accountable. The "Boeing 737-800" passenger plane of "Ukrainian Airlines" crashed at dawn on January 8, during a flight from Tehran to the Ukrainian capital Kiev, after taking off minutes, in a disaster that killed 176 people.

The Revolutionary Guard declares that he takes full responsibility for the Ukrainian plane crash

image.jpeg.ed18511bb953dacd1b4a6964b9b0ac22.jpeg

11th January, 2020

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced today, Saturday, that they bear full responsibility for the crash of the Ukrainian plane, which crashed near Khomeini Airport in Tehran, last Wednesday.

Iranian media quoted the commander of the Revolutionary Guards' underground force, Brigadier Amir Ali Haji Zada, as saying that his forces bear full responsibility for the human error that resulted in the downing of the Ukrainian plane Wednesday morning shortly after takeoff from Khomeini Airport. "The Ukrainian plane gave signals to the radars as a cruise missile, which prompted the Iranian anti-aircraft to shoot it down," he added.

He also mentioned that the air defense systems were at the highest level of preparedness due to the tension with America, so it was enough to press one button to launch the missiles. "We have contacted several times with the responsible authorities to stop air traffic in the countrys airspace that night," he added.

Haji Zadeh also pointed out that the incident occurred within the conditions of preparedness for an unprecedented war, adding, "We are ready for any orders or account by officials."  "Upon hearing the news of the Ukrainian plane crashing, I wished that I would rather die instead of hearing this news. I have not seen such an incident. I heard the news of the Ukrainian plane crashing in the west of the country after we launched missile strikes at the American base."

"More than a week ago, conditions in the region, tensions and the possibility of war were unprecedented, and we did not reach this stage since the beginning of the revolution and the possibility of war was very great. The armed forces of both sides [Iran and America] were on 100 percent alert, especially after declaring The Americans will bomb 52 locations in Iran, so the offensive and defensive air defense systems were on 100% alert.”

Who is the "scapegoat" offered by Iran on the altar of the stricken Ukrainian plane?

Follow-up to "liberation arenas"

After the Iranian regime formally approved the downing of the Ukrainian plane last Wednesday, the commander of the Revolutionary Guard Air Force-Space Brigadier Amir Ali Haji Zada tried to blame a soldier in the army for this “mistake,” in an apparent effort to distance the charge from the regime and provide a “scapegoat” .

The senior military official said in statements on Saturday that a soldier fired the missile that shot down a Ukrainian plane Wednesday in Tehran, without receiving confirmation of the launch order due to "interference" in the communications.

Haji Zadeh said that the soldier believed the plane was a "cruise missile" and had only "10 seconds" to make the decision.

The commander of the Air Force-Space of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Brigadier Amir Ali Haji

On Saturday, Iranian state television transmitted a military statement saying that Iran had "unintentionally" shot down the Ukrainian plane minutes after it had left the airport, and justified this with a "human error".

But despite this recognition, Iran insisted on prevarication. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on Twitter that her crash was caused by human error and the "American tendency to adventure".

The IHS Markit research center suggested it was shot down by a Russian-made SA-15 missile. The range of the missile ranges from 10 to 12 km.

Given the plane's speed at the time, the rocket operators had only 10 to 20 seconds to make a decision, according to Michael Elman, of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Elman said that Iran had fired several missiles against American targets in Iraq hours before the Ukrainian plane flew, so it is likely that Iranian air defense personnel were operating under the utmost alert.

But an analysis of the Forbes website said that missile defense devices are usually equipped with an "identification from friend" or so-called Identification friend or foe, a device designed to identify aircraft, cars, friendly or enemy forces, and assuming that it was down at the time, the missile operators They could review flight timings in the area they were flying over at that time.

ISIS praises the assassination of Soleimani and the engineer, as a “divine intervention”!

The Russian “RT” channel reported, on Saturday, that the terrorist organization ISIS rejoiced the assassination of the United States by General Qassem Soleimani and Deputy Chairman of the Popular Mobilization Authority, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, calling it a “divine interference”.

The channel, in its English version, said in a news translated by the "Al-Maalouma" agency that "the so-called weekly newspaper Al-Nabaa issued by the ISIS terrorist organization praised the assassination of states by General Qassem Soleimani as a divine intervention to support their cause."

He added, "The newspaper tried not to mention the US's favor over them and avoided mentioning General Soleimani by name, citing a historical analogy of Muslims rejoicing at the wars between the Romans and the Persians, and it also mentioned that stopping the United States and its allies from their operations against the terrorist organization gives them an opportunity to renew themselves in order to rise again in the region that states that the United States and its allies are invoking the presence of ISIS in the region to stay longer in Iraq despite the Iraqi parliament’s vote on Removing foreign forces from Iraq.

Cheap Talk: Iran Literally Can’t Afford To Go To War

5e189265f345e.jpg

Posted January 10, 2020 in Politics , Source: politicocnbc,

As Iran continues to try to demonstrate their dominance over the US following the assassination of military leader Qasem Soleimani, many have questioned whether they can put their money where their mouth is.

Although it appeared as though the Iranians were "standing down" following an attack on U.S. forces, their behavior has been predictably unpredictable.

From Politico:

Although Trump said he would “immediately impose” a slate of additional new sanctions on the Iranian regime, he declined to announce military retaliation and insisted the U.S. “is ready to embrace peace with all who seek it.”

Hours earlier, however, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned in a speech in the holy city of Qom that while the U.S. was “slapped” in the missile strike, “such military actions are not enough.”

Iran’s Islamist government fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles earlier this week targeting at least two Iraqi air bases in Ain al-Asad and Irbil that were “hosting U.S. military and coalition personnel,” according to the Pentagon.

The statement that the U.S. was "slapped" was a bit of a stretch considering that there were 0 casualties and minimal damage done, but if the Iranians want to inflict some actual harm, can they even afford to do so?

According to CNBC, there is no data "readily available" that is updated regarding the state of Iran's economy.

And although Iran had experienced some relief from previous sanctions under the Obama administration, their economy went "into a tailspin" after new sanctions were reinstated by President Trump, regardless of how much oil they possess:

Iran is estimated to have the world’s fourth-largest crude oil reserves, according to the World Bank. Much of the country’s economic growth and government revenues depend on the sale of crude oil.

But restrictions on the sale of Iranian oil were among the U.S. sanctions that Trump reinstated two years ago. That’s one of the major reasons why forecasters, including the International Monetary Fund, expect the production and exports of Iranian crude oil to decline.

Now that Iran's economy is failing and the United States is the top producer of oil in the world, it's possible that their imports may have exceeded their exports in 2019, and may continue in 2020.

Also, the exchange rate for the Iranian rial stands at 42,000 to 1 U.S. dollar.

So although Iran is putting forth quite an effort to appear formidable in the current conflict against the United States, is is possible that they've overplayed their hand?

I hope I explain my notion of this interview concerning $$$$ to Dinars.

So Trump says we hold $ 35 BILLION of their money. Back in early 2004 when I purchased IQD it was (approx.) $ 608.00 per Million of IQD

So then did we " Purchase/Hold " $ 35 Billion worth of IQD at the " going rate " of (approx.) $ 608.00 IQD, back in the day ????

If TRUE, When the day comes ( … and can Trump PUT that much pressure to bear to force these nit wits to RI/RV in 2020 ? ) when the RI/RV comes about, that's going to be quite a PAY DAY ( AND I AINT TALKING CARAMEL & PEANUTS HERE ) for the USA.

. . .  OR am I way off base ?????:confused2: What am I missing ???

Iran would be decimated if they pushed for a war with the USA; not to mention the current leadership would be out of a job, and probably pushing up daisies. . .  and they know that.

Now they know that they can't BLUFF the Trump/USA. We're just waiting for them to screw up so we can unleash the Dogs of War.

I keep listening to end of that video, over and over.

Is he saying we have THEIR money that belongs to them (sitting in an account)?

Or is he saying we have their money (DINARS) that we purchased?

At the end of the video, he says he thinks they'll agree to pay.  So it sounds like it's THEIR money.

I guess we won't be hearing any more of "death to America" or "death or Israel" chants.  Thank God!
