The popular crowd in Iraq quickly denied its involvement in targeting the US embassy on Monday, according to Iraqi news websites, which raised questions about the reason for this move at a time when militias profess hostility to the United States.

On Monday, the Iraqi News Agency quoted the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Authority, Abu Ali al-Basri, as saying that "the popular crowd has nothing to do with the bodies that targeted the US embassy in Iraq."

He pointed out that "these groups express themselves, and the popular crowd does not adopt any process," without giving details of the identity of the intended groups.

And US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that he had asked Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to fulfill Iraq's international obligations related to the protection of diplomatic missions.

Three of the five rockets that targeted the Green Zone in central Baghdad, on Sunday evening, landed right inside the campus of the American embassy, and one of them hit the restaurant at dinner time, according to a security source told AFP.

At least one person was injured by the missiles.

The American diplomatic mission has been subjected to several missile attacks in recent months, and this is the second attack in a week.

Although this is the first time that a direct hit has been announced, a US official told France Press that the missiles targeting the US embassy on January 21 "landed near the deputy ambassador's house."

In a statement, the resigned Iraqi Prime Minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, condemned "the fall of a number of Katyusha rockets inside the campus of the American embassy."

He added, "We deplore the continuation of these condemned and outlaw acts that weaken the state and violate its sovereignty and the sanctity of the diplomatic missions on its soil."

Abdul-Mahdi described the firing of the missiles as a "unilateral, not responsible" act, which "could drag Iraq into a battlefield, especially at a time when the government started measures to implement the House’s decision to withdraw foreign forces from the country."

The Iraqi parliament held a session on the fifth of January, in which it voted on the government's mandate to end the presence of foreign forces in the country, including about 5,200 American soldiers.

This came in an angry response to the United States killing Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, and deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Organization, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, with bombing from a drone in Baghdad.

A leader in Badr is likely to involve two parties in targeting the embassy: the Americans or terrorism

Baghdad / Obelisk: The leader of the Badr Organization, Moeen Al-Kazemi, on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, suggested that two parties stood behind the targeting of the American embassy in Baghdad in order to mix papers and drag the country into war with Washington.

The judiciary is discussing with the American ambassador the results of the investigation into the repeated attack on the embassy

Iranian media announced on Tuesday that the American intelligence man, Michael Dandria, had been dubbed "Ayatollah Mike", stressing that Tehran accuses him of plotting to assassinate the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Qassem Soleimani, in Iraq.

And Iranian television announced that "the American officer was on board the American military plane, which fell yesterday, Monday, in Ghazni province, central Afghanistan, and the Taliban claimed responsibility for shooting it down," according to the Iranian "Mehr" agency.

 

Iranian television reported that "Michael Dandria also supervised the assassination of Imad Mughniyeh, a senior military commander of the Lebanese Hezbollah in Syria in 2008."

 

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said that "an American military plane crashed in Ghazni province in central Afghanistan," noting that "the plane was flying for intelligence purposes, and that all of the people on board were American officers, and they were killed."

 

While the US military confirmed, in a statement, the crash - the E11A - but said that "there are no indications that the crash was caused by enemy fire."

 

Dandria, 62, was assigned in 2017 to head the CIA's Iran Mission Center, while press reports indicate that he also took over Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as being a key figure in the search for al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
