Iraq sets up a map to link its electricity with the Gulf statesIraq sets up a map to link its electricity with the Gulf states

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said on Saturday there was significant progress in talks with Saudi Arabia to supply the country with electricity.

"His country is trying to reach an electric link with the Gulf states," an Iraqi foreign ministry spokesman was quoted as saying.

He added that "we have a clear road map for the electric connection with the Gulf states," saying that "the understandings coming with the Gulf countries will go beyond the subject of electric linkage."

The Iranian government has cut the power supply line to the southern provinces of Iraq, causing a major crisis that has developed into popular protests.

The Iraqi government has decided to supply Kuwait with fuel for power plants as a temporary solution that would lead to agreements between Baghdad, Riyadh and Kuwait to provide Iraq with electricity instead of Tehran, which faces difficult economic conditions after Washington imposed economic sanctions.

Saudi Arabia agrees to build a solar power plant and sell electricity to Iraq at a huge discount

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia agreed on Monday, July 30, 2018, to build a solar power plant and sell electricity to Iraq at a huge discount to supply the war-torn country that it had previously bought from Iran.

"The agreement, which has not yet been approved by the Iraqi authorities, includes the construction of a 3000 megawatt plant in Saudi Arabia within one year of signing the agreement," Iraqi Ministry of Electricity spokesman Musab al-Mudar said in a telephone interview with Bloomberg.

"Iraq will buy electricity at $ 21 per megawatt hour or a quarter of what it paid Iran for imports," he said.

Protests erupted in Iraq this month, fueled by anger over unemployment and inadequate public services, including power and water shortages since the US-led invasion in 2003.

Iraq stopped electricity purchases from Iran in July, exacerbating the gap between electricity supply and consumption, which led to power cuts.

Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi, Minister of Electricity Qasim al-Fahdawi, on Sunday, July 29, 2018, while the government is investigating the cause of weak electricity services, two weeks ago, Iraq formed a committee to develop plans to address the concerns of demonstrators, and allocated 3.5 trillion dinars to support services that will address their issues.

Saudi Arabia has agreed to an agreement with Iraq to build a 3,000-megawatt power station for Iraq.

It added that "the plant produces 3000 MW and exports its production to Iraq by a quarter of the value of what Tehran supplies to Baghdad."

Saudi Arabia has reportedly agreed to build a solar power plant and sell the electricity to Iraq at a steep discount compared to what the war-torn country previously bought from Iran.

The deal, which has yet to be approved by Iraqi authorities, includes building a 3,000-megawatt plant in Saudi Arabia within a year of the agreement, Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity spokesman Mussab Serri said. Iraq will buy the electricity for $21 (Dh77) per megawatt-hour, or a quarter of what it paid Iran for the imports, Mr Serri said.

Protests have broken out in Iraq this month, spurred by anger over unemployment and inadequate public services — including power and water shortages. Iraq halted purchases of electricity from Iran in July, exacerbating a gap between the supply of electricity and consumption that has resulted in rolling power cuts.

Chronic power shortages coupled with scorching summer temperatures have exacerbated widespread discontent, sparking deadly demonstrations. Fourteen people were killed and hundreds wounded over the past three weeks.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi suspended Electricity Minister Qassim Fahdawi on Sunday while the government investigates why the power service is poor. Two weeks ago, Iraq formed a committee to come up with plans to address protesters’ concerns and it allocated 3.5 trillion dinars ($3 billion/Dh11bn) to support services that would address the issues.

Since the toppling of dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003, Iraq has allocated in state budgets a total of US$40 billion to rebuild its power network, according to official figures.

But much of that has been siphoned off by politicians and businessmen in a country listed by Transparency International as the world's 12th-most corrupt.

Protesters have also railed against unemployment, state mismanagement and a lack of clean water. Stagnant water with sewage has caused health problems and tap water is sometimes contaminated with mud and dust.

Southern Iraq in particular has been suffering through a punishing drought, with desperate cattle breeders seeing themselves forced to sell off animals in order to keep the remaining ones alive.

Local authorities estimate that some 30 per cent of cattle across the south of the country have been lost during the drought, either dying from thirst or sold off for slaughter.

That is a major blow for the estimated 475,000 families who make their livings from livestock across the south of the conflict-hit country.

Herder Ali, 24, understands only too well the challenges.

He has to travel ever greater distances with his flock to find water.

Around him, canals have run dry and the cracked earth, empty water pipes, and dead grass testify to how few options farmers now have.

To quench the thirst of their animals they have to pay, and the price of water has shot up, he tells Agence France-Presse.

This year rainfall has been particularly scarce and reservoirs currently stand at only 10 per cent full.

"Never in its history has Iraq known such a catastrophe," said Ahmed Al Issawi, head of the agricultural cooperative in Najaf.

"Our animals are forced to drink water where even mosquitos can't survive."

The drought has seen other problems increase - disease, worms and epidemics.

Animals "contaminate each other very quickly and die," Mr Issawi says.

The Mesopotamian Marshes, one of the biggest wetlands in the region, have long been seen as one of the jewels of southern Iraq.

But now they no longer help guarantee an income for those who live there, meaning people have already started to move away - and more look set to follow.

"There will be an exodus," Mr Issawi warned.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Unknown armed groups have attacked electricity infrastructure in Kirkuk Province for the second time in one week, leading to power shortages in parts of Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Salahuddin.

In a statement on Friday, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity said the 400 KV electricity transmission lines between Kirkuk and Diyala were subjected to “a terrorist act” in Ausaj valley near the Enjana checkpoint in Kirkuk.

It added that the sabotage led to an entire power shortage in Mosul and Kirkuk—except power supplies coming from the Kurdistan Region—and in parts of Salahuddin Province.

According to the statement, this is the eighth attack on the Kirkuk-Diyala transmission line in two months.

On July 31, the transmission line between Kirkuk and Erbil was damaged by a bomb attack in Kirkuk’s Dibis area, leading to a complete power shortage in Nineveh Province.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the Ministry said they foiled another attack on a transmission line between Nasriya and Wasit provinces in southern Iraq.

The Ministry of Electricity previously announced that it had exhausted its capacity and potential and now finds it difficult to restore services as its storages are running out of equipment to renovate the destroyed power stations and transmission lines, the statement revealed.

The Ministry called on security forces to track criminals who try to hurt the Iraqi people by targeting the electricity infrastructure.

In mid-July, the Ministry of Electricity revealed that Iran cut power supplies to Iraq due to unpaid bills. The Iranian move has exacerbated the country’s energy crisis creating widespread anger and demonstrations across several provinces in southern Iraq.

Since July 8, people have taken to the streets demanding the government provides them with better services, one of those demands being better electricity.

According to the former Iraqi Parliament’s Energy Committee, the country has spent 40 billion USD on the energy sector since 2003, yet the government has not been able to provide 24-hour electricity to its people.

Siemens to add 650 MW to power plant in Iraq

Siemens to add 650 MW to power plant in Iraq
Siemens to add 650 MW to power plant in Iraq

In another step towards supporting the rebuilding of Iraq’s power infrastructure, Siemens will upgrade one of the country’s largest gas-fired power plants, Zawya reported.

Under a new contract, Siemens will add 650 megawatts (MW) to Shatt Al Basra Gas Power Plant, which currently has a power generation capacity of 1,250 MW and consists of non-Siemens turbines operating in simple-cycle mode.

Siemens will supply five of its highly-efficient steam turbines, ensuring the additional power supply comes at no extra fuel requirement. With this upgrade, the facility will be converted to operating in combined cycle mode and its overall efficiency will increase to more than 50 percent. Once the works are completed, the power plant will supply around one million Iraqis with reliable and clean electricity.

Siemens was awarded the contract by China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC). The developer of the project is KAR Electrical Power Production Trading FZE (KEPPT).

Earlier this year, Siemens was contracted to supply two of its robust SST-5000 steam turbines to a similar project in Rumaila in Iraq, making it the first large-scale open cycle conversion project in the country. The upgrade works for both the Rumaila and the Shatt Al Basra power plants are scheduled for completion by 2020.

“Iraq is rebuilding its power infrastructure and we are eager to support the country’s future aspirations.

A reliable and efficient power supply is the backbone of a prosperous economy and today’s announcement underscores an important step towards realizing Iraq’s aspirations towards building a robust power system and a sustainable economy for its people,” said Jean-Claude Nasr, Senior Executive Vice President, Power Generation at Siemens in the Middle East.

Siemens recently received an order to modernize the Rumaila gas-fired power plant in Iraq, adding 700 MW to the plant. The scope of supply includes two SST-5000 steam turbines.
From energy supply and industry to financing and training, Siemens outlined its roadmap and commitment to supporting the development of Iraq in February at the Iraq reconstruction conference held in Kuwait.

The roadmap identified the country’s short, mid and long-term development needs. It focused on key areas including energy management, resource efficiency, education, anti-corruption and financing.

It detailed how Siemens can support the country’s transformation. Siemens envisions 40 million Iraqis living in vibrant cities, powered by reliable and efficient energy; a strong industrial sector and sustainable economic development, led by world-class, home-grown talent.

This is a easy one to figure out. Iran wants turmoil and Iraq so they try to destroy electric plants. It's like a double bonus for them. Iran wants Iraq to buy electricity from them and they also Dangle it over their heads like a carrot to a rabbit. The more unrest the more that Iraqi's want help from Iran.
