Mosul (IraqiNews.com) An official from the paramilitary troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi has revealed Prime Minister and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces Haidar al-Abadi’s refusal of the troops participation in liberating Tal Afar town, Islamic State’s major stronghold near the borders with Syria.

In remarks, Jawad al-Tulaibawi, from the Public Mobilization Units (PMUs) said the forces will head toward al-Baaj, after liberating Hatra region, in addition to securing the Iraqi-Syrian borders in order to prevent any supply to IS in Iraq.

He added that Abadi’s orders including liberating Hatra then Baaj and securing the borders, refusing the troops participation in storming of Tal Afar.

Nahla al-Hababi, MP representing the Shiite alliance, said in statements on Saturday that “the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivered a message to Abadi that the Iraqi troops advance toward Tal Afar would mean a similar advance by Turkish troops toward the town too.”

In an TV interview aired in April, Erdogan criticized the PMUs and described them as terrorist entity.

“Who are al-Hashd al-Shaabi? Who is backing them? The Iraqi parliament supports al-Hashd al-Shaabi, but, honestly, they are a terrorist organization, and should be known who stands behind it,” he said during the interview.

On Thursday, PMUs liberated Hatra region after an offensive was launched to Tuesday to free it from IS fighters and cut off the IS routes between Hawija, Mosul and eastern Syria.

Airstrikes kill 13 IS members west of Mosul: MoD

An air strike on a residential area in Mosul.

Tal Afar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army airstrikes killed 13 Islamic State members west of Mosul on Monday, according to the Ministry of Defense, which said facilities belonging to the group were also destroyed.

The army’s F-16s destroyed a bomb manufacturing and var booby-trapping workshops, as well as a weapons cache and rest houses belonging to the extremist group in a village at the IS stronghold town of Tal Afar, west of Mosul. Other strikes at the 17 Tamuz (July 17th) and Hawi al-Kanisa districts killed 13 fighters.

Iraqi army forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and paramilitary troops, recaptured eastern Mosul from Islamic State members in January after three months of fighting. A complementary offensive launched in February to retake the western region.

Iraqi generals say they control 70 percent of the western side of Mosul, and that the total of territory held by IS in Iraq is less than seven percent.

The government troops are still struggling to purge the Old City, home of the Grand Nuri Mosque where Islamic State supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared the establishment of the group in 2014.

Coalition commanders estimate the number of remaining IS fighters in Mosul by less than 1000. While those are facing at least 100.000 government and paramilitary soldiers, it is their deployment within civilian communities that has delayed the elimination of the group.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A military source has revealed beginning of operations to liberate two districts in western Mosul.

Speaking to Alghad Press on Monday, the source said, “security troops began offensives to liberate al-Harmat and 17 Tamuz (July 17th) in western Mosul.”

“Troops tightened their control on Badush region,” the source added.

On Sunday, an army colonel was quoted as saying that Iraqi government forces are opening new front in their battles against Islamic State militants in western Mosul, targeting the recapture of four last districts including 17 Tamuz, Harmat, Mesherfa and Hawi al-Kanisa in order to accelerate the liberation of the city.

Another security source from Nineveh Province previously declared that offensives in western Mosul were to resume on Monday after being halted for five days.

While Iraqi generals previously claimed their control on 70 percent of the western side of Mosul, Defense Minister Erfan al-Hiyali estimated on Monday the remaining part of western Mosul that is still held by Islamic State at thirty-five percent.

The number of Islamic State fighters remaining in Mosul are estimated by Iraqi troops at 200 to 300, mostly foreigners, down from nearly 6,000 when the offensive started.

Islamic State execute 10 for escaping western Mosul districts, assisting security

Members of the Islamic State execute men by firing squad.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants executed ten civilians on Monday for attempting to flee districts under their control in western Mosul as security forces begin assaulting those areas.

A local source told Alsumaria News that the group executed the civilians for attempting to flee the 17 Tamuz (July 17th) district and for collaboration with security forces. The source added the the group filed the execution process which had been sanctioned by the group’s so-called “Sharia court”.

Iraqi forces began a new push towards four western Mosul districts which remain under IS control, including 17 Tamuz district. Government forces recaptured eastern Mosul in January, an launched a new offensive in February to retake the western side of the city.

IS has executed hundreds of civilians for cooperating with security forces and fleeing its domains in the city. The conflict in Mosul has so far displaced 600.000 people, while 400.000 are feared stranded in inhumane conditions under IS captivity in the region.

Wolves join forces with IS, kill 100 people fleeing Anbar havens

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) One hundred people were killed by both Islamic State militants and feral desert wolves while fleeing the extremist group’s havens in western Anbar, a local paramilitary commander said.

Qatari al-Obaidi, a commander at the province’s “mobilization units” fighting the Islamic State, was quoted by Iraqi websites Baghdad Times and Almaalomah.info saying that more than 100 civilians and casual security members disappeared while escaping Islamic State-held areas towards western Anbar deserts.

Obaidi quoted local shepherds at the desert area saying they had seen Islamic State members executing a number of civilians and security agents fleeing towards security deployment locations. He added that some others were killed when attacked by desert wolves and other beasts of prey.

Rawa, Anbar (google maps).

Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition fighter jets have regularly pounded locations held by the Islamic State at the stronghold towns of Annah, Qaim and Rawa, killing dozens of militants. Thousands of civilians are thought to be held in Islamic State captivity at those locations. It is widely expected that the Iraqi government will launch a major security offensive in Anbar once it is done with its U.S.-backed campaign to drive out IS from Mosul, the group’s principal stronghold in Iraq, which has been running since October 2016. Military officials have been quoted over the past few weeks telling of preparations to invade IS havens in the province.

IS has regularly executed civilians and security members over espionage and attempting to flee its domains since the group emerged in 2014 to proclaim and “Islamic Caliphate”.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi troops have gained control on more regions in western Mosul and foiled a suicide attack by Islamic State militants, according to a source from the Iraqi army.

“Security forces were able to control wide parts in al-Zanjili district,” Ali Mohsen, from the army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Forces, said. “Explosives were defused. Suicide attacks by IS fighters that sought hindering the advance of security troops were thwarted.”

“Federal Police troops arrested 23 IS members, including leaders, and controlled places that were used by the militants as booby trapping workshops,” he added.

Meanwhile, Federal Police have announced murder of four IS snipers and bombarding of the area surrounding the Grand al-Nuri mosque in the western side of the city.

Located in the Old City, the mosque is the place from which Islamic State’s supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi gave a famous sermon declaring the establishment of the group’s rule in Iraq and neighboring Syria.

In statements, Lt.Gen. Shaker Jawdat, Federal Police chief, said troops combed areas in Bab al-Jadid and Bab al-Bayd districts looking for sleeper cells and secret tunnels. “Three rest houses including eight booby-trapped motorbikes and explosives were found.

Mosul is the Islamic State’s strongest stronghold in Iraq. Eastern Mosul was recaptured from IS in January, after a US-backed offensive was launched in October. A new offensive started in February to retake the west.

(Reuters) A U.S. service member who died when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on patrol outside the northern Iraqi city of Mosul was identified on Sunday as 1st Lieutenant Weston Lee.

Lee, 25, of Bluffton, Georgia, was an infantry officer assigned to 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, the U.S. Army said in a statement.

U.S.-backed forces have been fighting to retake the Islamic State strongholds of Mosul.

News of the death came as U.S. President Donald Trump marked his first 100 days in office. During last year’s presidential election campaign, Trump vowed to give priority to destroying Islamic State, which operates mostly in Syria and Iraq.

Islamic State has lost most of the city since the offensive began in October and is now surrounded in the northwestern districts, including the historic Old City center.

Even if defeated in Mosul, Islamic State will remain in control of vast swathes of land in the border area with Syria.

Army say killed 30 IS members at Anbar-Salahuddin borders

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army commanders said army forces killed 30 Islamic State members and took over a command center on the borders between Anbar and Salahuddin provinces.

A source at the Anbar army command told Alsumaria news that a force from the army’s 7th division, backed by fighter jets and paramilitary forces, killed 30 IS members during an operation at the Malha desert region.

The source said a communication facility and two booby-trapped vehicles were also destroyed in the assault.

Borders conjoining Anbar, Salahuddin and Diyala have witnessed occasional attacks by Islamic State against government and paramilitary troops deployments since Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and PMus, launched a major offensive to retake areas occupied by IS since 2014, most notably the city of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and the group’s most important stronghold in the country.

Observers have said Islamic State’s occasional attacks against security and civilians outside Mosul aimed at distracting security attention from the Mosul front. IS still holds a few areas in Salahuddin, Diyala, Anbar and Kirkuk, but the Iraqi government, employing most of its military power in the Mosul campaign, is expected to aim at those strongholds once the battle in Mosul realizes victory.

Iraqi generals say IS militants currently control less than seven percent of Iraqi territory.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq says violence in Iraq left 720 people dead and wounded in April.

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (4:35 P.M.) – ISIS insurgents continue to wreck havoc in the western part of Anbar province, continuously targeting the Iraqi Armed Forces in the region.

On Sunday, a large convoy of ISIS technicals raided government outposts and trenches north of Rutbah, a key junction town in the desert governorate:

Armed ISIS drones, dropping artillery shells with some precision, also preluded the attacks to scout out and destroy Iraqi trenches and fortifications:

War on ISIS Could Push Islamic State Fighters Out of Iraq for Good in May, Iraqi Commander Says

By Tom O'Connor On 5/1/17 at 12:23 PM

The Iraqi military could soon drive the Islamic State group (ISIS) from its final major bastion of Iraqi territory in Mosul, according to the Iraqi army’s chief of staff.

In a press statement cited Sunday by local state-run media, Iraqi Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Othman al-Ghanmi said his forces would retake Iraq’s second-largest city from militants loyal to the ultraconservative Sunni Muslim group within three weeks, Reuters reported. The military leader said that ISIS’ territory, which was estimated to comprise 45 percent of the nation at its height in 2014 before falling down to less than seven percent last month, had been further diminished to about 3.8 percent. The Iraqi military and its allies, including Iran-backed Shiite Muslim militias, Kurdish forces and a U.S.-led coalition, secured Mosul’s eastern half at the beginning of the year and have advanced, despite fierce resistance from ISIS in the western part of the city.

"Our armed forces control more than 40 percent of the Old Mosul area,” Ghanmi said, according to Iraq’s official al-Sabah newspaper, “And the percentage of what remains under ISIS occupation, up to this moment, is about 35 percent of the right side of Mosul.”

Ghanmi also said intelligence indicated that ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who announced the group’s global caliphate from Mosul’s Al-Nuri mosque in 2014, had been detected moving “on an ongoing basis” along the border of Iraq and Syria, where ISIS also claims territory. Ghanmi credited the Russia-Syria-Iran-Iraq coalition, established in 2015 to counter ISIS’ spread in the Middle East, saying it “provides very useful information to locate terrorists and the objectives are addressed through joint quadripartite coordination."

The U.S. also backs Iraq politically and militarily in its battle against ISIS, but Ghanmi stressed that “Iraqi forces are fighting alone on the ground.” Washington has cautiously accepted the role of the Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), also known as al-Hashd al-Shaabi, in the fight against ISIS, but has publicly criticized Tehran’s intervention in the region. In neighboring Syria, the U.S. backs the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a majority-Kurd coalition of Arabs and ethnic minorities currently battling toward ISIS’ de facto capital of Raqqa in northern Syria. Russia and Iran support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad who has retaken virtually every population center from both ISIS and the various insurgent groups that have attempted to overthrow his government since 2011.

ISIS's origins can be traced back to Al-Qaeda's affiliate in Iraq. The militant organization launched a campaign of attacks against U.S. troops and Iraq's Shiite Muslim community in an effort to destabilize the country after the U.S. invaded and overthrew President Saddam Hussein in 2003. The group became the Islamic State of Iraq after merging with other jihadist groups in 2006 and, in 2010, rebranded itself once again as ISIS under Baghdadi. The group took large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria in the following years before being beaten back by various local and international forces

In 2016 alone, ISIS lost nearly a quarter of its territory, according to leading security and terrorism analysis group, IHS Jane's Conflict Monitor.

We the honorable soldiers and sailors of the world must take an oath to hunt them through eternity if necessary until justice is served to them via a sharp small blade. For these cowards deserve lingchi more than anyone in history.
