Food supplies ran-out of the city since the beginning of the operations on 17th of October 2016, even the families who put aside some supplies have ran-out of food due to the long siege, according to al-Jabouri.

Exclusive: Mosul Dam back in action, says official

April 26 2017 07:34 PM
Mosul Dam
Mosul Dam

Director of Mosul Dam said on Wednesday that maintenance work at has completed and that the dam resumed work, The Baghdad Post reported.

In exclusive statements to The Baghdad Post, he said the dam, Iraq's largest, was seized in 2014 by ISIS for two months. Then, it was captured by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces.

The dam has suffered from structural flaws since its completion in 1984, with the water constantly eating away at the soluble gypsum base on which it is built.

To counter the erosion, engineers need to drill holes in the gypsum and fill them with a cement grout mixture six days a week.

In February, 2016, the US embassy in Baghdad warned the dam might collapse, calling civilians in nearby villages to be ready to evacuate.

Around 1.47 million Iraqis living along the River Tigris would be threatened if the dam collapsed.

ISIS develops new IEDs, says monitoring group

ISIS terrorists have managed to develop an explosive charge that can be launched from rifles or dropped from an aerial drone, an arms monitoring group said Wednesday.

Conflict Armament Research (CAR) announced the terror group was “promoting the development of ‘own-brand’ weapons” to provide its insurgents with otherwise unavailable armaments.

“The (IED) can be thrown, launched from an improvised rifle attachment, or in its most recent phases of development, dropped from a commercial, off-the-shelf unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drone,” CAR said in a report following visits to Mosul in November, February and March.

Iraqi forces now attacking ISIS with drones in Mosul -USAToday

April 26 2017 01:38 PM
.
.

USATODAY

At the peak in February, ISIS deployed 10 to 15 drones a day against Iraqi security forces as they fought to clear militants from Mosul, said Air Force Col. John Dorrian, a military spokesman in Baghdad.

The number of militant drones is now down to about one or two a day, principally for surveillance, he said. During the past two weeks there have been no recorded incidents of militants using an armed drone in Iraq or Syria, according to coalition military statistics.

The militants’ use of drones in Mosul highlighted the danger commercial drones have in the hands of ISIS.

“They’ve actually gone to almost swarm-level capability in a couple of cases,” Lt. Gen. Michael Lundy, commander of the Combined Arms Center, said last month. The Army has been studying the militants' use of drones in Mosul to counter the threat in the future.

“It’s a serious concern,” said Seth Jones, a counterterrorism expert at RAND Corp. “A range of terror organizations are able to buy off-the-shelf drones and use them against the United States and its allies.”

Jones said terror groups are likely looking for ways to put larger munitions on the drones. In Iraq and Syria, the militants mostly used small grenade-sized munitions or mortar shells on drones.

Even the smaller munitions can be deadly. In October a drone with an explosive hidden in it killed two Kurdish soldiers and injured two French Special Forces advisers who were with them. The explosive was detonated after the drone had been downed by Kurdish forces.

Iraqi forces have not released data on how many deaths or injuries have been caused by drones. No U.S. forces have been injured by drones in Iraq or Syria.

Their main benefit is surveillance, particularly in a crowded city like Mosul. The small aircraft, which have a
range of several miles, can maneuver through tight streets and alleys to see what lies ahead. Iraqi forces now use them to identify militant snipers, which have been a significant threat in western Mosul.

The militants have no way of blunting the use of drones by Iraqi forces. “The enemy doesn’t have any anti-drone technology other than try to blaze away at the drones,” Dorrian said.

The small quad copters and other small commercial aircraft don’t compare to the level of sophistication and firepower of U.S. Predators and Reapers, which can stay in the sky for long periods of time and fire weapons with precision.

The militants have been indiscriminate in their use of drones, the U.S. military said. “They just dropped (munitions) and they didn’t care who they dropped it on,” said Marine Brig. Gen. Rick Uribe, director of the Combined Joint Operations Center-Baghdad.

But the weaponized drones have captured headlines, producing a propaganda benefit for ISIS. “It’s more of a psychological effect than anything else,” said Patrick Martin, an analyst at the Institute for the Study of War.

Ancient Town of Hazar in Nineveh Liberated

Ancient Town of Hazar in Nineveh Liberated

ERBIL— Shi'ite paramilitaries on Wednesday announced that they have gained full control over the town of Hazar, south of Mosul.

Media outlets affiliated with the Shi'ite Popular Mobilization (Hashd al-Shaabi) forces reported that the forces have liberated Hazar from the Islamic State (IS) jihadists and now are searching the town for the remnants of the Islamic extremists.

On Tuesday the Iraqi forces launched Mohammed Rasul Allah (Mohammed, God's Prophet) to liberate Hazar and its entire vicinity, south of Nineveh.

The town dates back to the third century AM, to  the era of Seleucids Empire and is in a remnant of a kingdom called by the same name which was ran by four kings for about one century.

Hazar enjoyed a semi-autonomous status and separated both the Parthian and Roman empires.

The kingdom was famous for its architecture, arts, weapons and industries and was a major commercial spot.

Iraqi Forces Use Military Drones Against IS Snipers

Iraqi Forces Use Military Drones Against IS Snipers

SOFIA — Iraqi security forces have begun using military drones in the fight against the so-called Islamic State (IS) in order to kill their snipers and destroy stationary targets, Operation Inherent Resolve said on Wednesday.

Colonel John Dorrian, a spokesperson for the Operation Inherent Resolve told reporters that the Iraqi forces have "turned the tables" in the fight against IS in Iraq by starting to use military drones as a new measure for destroying the IS positions in the region, Sputnik reported. Dorrian further explained that there is a significant success in the use of the drones, as the forces are better able to eliminate the IS snipers and Vehicle Born Improvised Devices (VBIDs) belonging to the extremist group.

The military official also said that the US has fielded electronic warfare technology in the areas of Mosul in northern Iraq, which are capable of damaging the electrical components within the commercial off-the-shelf drones. However, he did not provide details on the counter-drone systems used by the Iraqi government forces in the ongoing war against the Islamic State group.

ISTANBUL — One-hundred New Zealand and 300 Australian soldiers will be deployed to Iraq next week as part of Operation OKRA, Australia’s contribution to the anti-Islamic State (IS) international efforts.

Currently, the 400 soldiers known as Task Group Taji Five (TGT-5), are conducting a Mission Rehearsal Exercise (MRE) to prepare them for their duties in Iraq, according to Townsville Bulletin. Part of their training includes working with translators. In Iraq their mission will include training the Iraqi forces.

“Everyone in the training team is looking forward to doing what we can… to assist the Iraqi security forces,” he added.

Approximately 780 Australian Defense Force’s personnel are part of Operation OKRA’s Air Task Group (ATG), the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) and Task Group Taji (TG Taji).

New Zealand’s existing deployment in Iraq is of about 143 defence personnel.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) in western Mosul.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Pro-Iraqi government paramilitary forces said Wednesday they recaptured three more villages in the western flank
of Mosul as part of an operation that launched Tuesday to retake a strategic area from Islamic State militants.

The media service dof Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said troops recaptured the villages of Im Kreiz, Ghanem al-Awwad and Harraj in al-Hadar, a region which Iraqi government forces and PMUs launched synchronized offensives Tuesday that resulted in retaking nearly 12 villages.

Al-Hashd media said earlier on Wednesday mobilization forces reached al-Hadar’s archaeological area.

Mosul (google maps)

Iraqi government troops, backed by a U.S.-led international military coalition, recaptured eastern Mosul in January, and launched another campaign in February to retake the western region. Iraqi commanders recently claimed the recapture of 70 percent of the western region, saying IS was only controlling less than seven percent of Iraqi territory.

Coalition commanders estimate the number of remaining IS members in Mosul by less than 1000.

The most important battles Government troops are currently concentrated around western Mosul’s ancient Old City, the area which homes the Grand Nuri Mosque where the Islamic State’s supreme leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared the inception of an “Islamic Caliphate” on large parts of Iraq and Syria.

Mosul businesses start reconstruction without waiting for final Islamic State defeat

Mosul (Reuters) Some businessmen in Mosul have begun rebuilding their shattered premises without waiting for financial support from the cash-strapped Iraqi government or for the final defeat of Islamic State in the city.

“If we wait for support, it could take a long time,” said Rafeh Ghanem, who owns an automotive spare-parts business in the eastern side of the city.

An airstrike in January reduced the two-storey building that houses his shop and dozens of others to a heap of rubble and twisted steel rods.

U.S.-backed Iraqi forces took back the eastern side of Mosul in January, after 100 days of fighting. They are now fighting Islamic State in districts lying west of the Tigris river that bisects the city.

Ghanem said he and the 25 other businesses that rent space in the building agreed to contribute funds to help the landlord clear the debris and rebuild one of the two storeys.

Reconstruction started on April 11 and Ghanem hopes to return to business in three to four months.

He says waiting is of no use since the price of building materials is expected to rise as more reconstruction projects get under way, boosting demand for steel and cement.

The city, captured by IS in 2014, has suffered extensive damage as hundreds of houses and public buildings including the airport, the main railway station and the university have been destroyed.

Cement and steel prices have gone down steeply since the militants were defeated in eastern Mosul, as road connections have opened up with the rest of Iraq and Turkey, allowing supplies to resume.

A metric ton of cement used to sell for up to 350,000 Iraqi dinars ($300) after the militants took over nearly three years ago. It now costs 80,000 to 90,000, said an importer, Saif Ibrahim.

For Ghanem, there is no other choice but to rebuild the city which had a pre-war population of more than 2 million.

“We live in this city, we have to bring it back.” ($1 = 1,167.0000 Iraqi dinars)

Another strike killed 13 and destroyed two of their vehicles near al-Baaj region. Eleven others were also killed by an airstrike in Fawaz Hezam village, while ten were killed in Tal Afar when strikes targeted a trench and a communication center.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) The Islamic State news agency ‘Amaq’ released a video showing one of the IS’ Diwan al-Hisbah members (vigilantism) while removing the badge of the Spanish football club “Real Madrid” from the shirt of one of youths.

The footage shows al-Hisbah member while removing the badge from the youth’s shirt, using a scissors, after claiming that the badge design includes a cross.

The video also documented previous cases, where members of al-Hisbah punished several persons, who didn’t abide by the so-called Islamic clothes and appearance (short robes and long beards).

Noteworthy, Real Madrid badge incident is not the first of its kind, where the Islamic State group previously forces a child to remove the club badge, and also threatened to flog him with 80 lashes if he refused.
