Families fleeing ISIS-held city of Hawija.

Hawija (IraqiNews.com)  Islamic State militants have evacuated 850 civilians and burned their residences at the group’s main stronghold in Kirkuk to use them as future human shields, said a tribal leader.

Anwar al-Assi, who leads a tribal force combating Islamic State militants in Hawija, said in a press statement on Wednesday that Islamic State members transferred the civilians to a main playfield preparing to use them as human shields in case security forces charge at the town.

Assi said he had received information that IS executed 36 men in two days, but did not give more details about the reason or location of the execution.

IS members have been in control over Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk, since 2014, when the group came to the scene, took over several Iraqi regions and proclaimed an Islamic “caliphate”.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and paramilitary troops, launched an offensive in October to retake the city of Mosul, Islamic State’s largest urban stronghold in Iraq. The Iraqi government is planning to aim at other IS havens across Iraq after Mosul.

Local officials in Hawija have repeatedly urged the government to hasten with the liberation of their town.

Since taking over Iraqi regions, Islamic State members have executed dozens of civilians, security members and many of its own members for various reasons ranging from collaboration with security forces to attempting to flee areas under the group’s control, most notably Hawija.

Grand Al-Nuri Mosque in Mosul Surrounded by IS Militants

MOSUL — The Grand al-Nuri Mosque in Mosul wherein the Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had announced the establishment of the self-proclaimed caliphate in 2014 has been surrounded by IS militants. The streets around the Mosque have been closed, according to local residents.

For the past two days, residents have been witnessing IS militants taking up positions around the famous mosque located in the Old City neighborhood in western part of the city. It is this neighborhood which has been difficult to penetrate, requiring the opening on a new front from the northern side earlier this month after the advancement from the southern side stalled.

Currently about 200,000 people are residing in IS controlled areas of the town.

The operation to oust IS militants from the city began on October 17, 2016. Eastern half of the city was declared liberated in January, with the Iraqi and the US-led international coalition forces advancing into the western side in February.

IS Calls on Followers to Use eBay for Terrorist Attacks

ISTANBUL — The latest issue of the Islamic State’s English language magazine Rumiyah is urging its followers to use popular buy-and-sell platforms such as eBay, Craigslist and Gumtree to lure users in order to take them hostage and use them for attacks.

Out of several suggested ways to use these sites, the article titled "Just Terror Tactics" recommends posting fake for-sale ads and then arranging a meeting for the exchange, whereupon the unsuspecting person can be attacked, taken hostage or killed.

"Online sales by way of buy and sell websites such as Craigslist, Gumtree, eBay, the Loot, and others are an alternative means to luring one's victims," an article notes.

"The viewing and collecting of the item should be arranged to be at the location where one seeks to carry out his operation. Upon the target's arrival, one can then proceed to initiate his attack."

Other suggested options include posting fake ads for jobs or properties for rent. The article also explains how to subdue and restrain the targeted person before killing them.

“The viewing and collecting of the item should be arranged to be at the location where one seeks to carry out his operation,” the article reads, urging the instigators of such attacks to meet in busy public places.

“Upon the target’s arrival, one can then proceed to initiate his attack.”

Reportedly the use of dating apps and other sites such as Airbnb could also be potentially used by the terrorist group.

WHO, UNFPA Scale up Trauma, Emergency Obstetric Response for Mosul IDPs

Basnews English

01/06/2017 - 02:45

WHO, UNFPA Scale up Trauma, Emergency Obstetric Response for Mosul IDPs

BAGHDAD — The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) are extremely concerned about the health conditions of about 180 000 men, women and children that are reportedly still trapped inside west Mosul’s old city where access to health care services has been limited.

Tens of thousands of vulnerable women, children, and elderly in the old City are highly at risk to war related injuries, outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, waterborne diseases and acute diarrhoea, severe dehydration, possible forms of malnutrition, as well as critical reproductive health needs including maternal and new born care and management of complicated pregnancies.

The already high number of 6906 trauma casualties recorded from west Mosul during the period from February and May (as of 28 May 2017) is expected to further increase as the conflict deepens into the old city.  It is anticipated that those fleeing combat zones will be arriving to mustering points and camps with deteriorated health conditions requiring urgent medical attention.

In order to be ready to respond to these health needs, WHO and UNFPA in support of the MOH, have scaled up their emergency response capacity around Mosul’s city to ensure that civilians can have access to trauma care, primary health care and reproductive health services.  Specifically, WHO and partners are increasing the number of trauma stabilization points, prepositioning trauma supplies, life-saving medicines and supplies at and around mustering points and camps expected.

WHO has also expanded the medical referral capacity through provision of 6 additional ambulances critically needed to support the entire medical referral pathway from point of stabilization to rehabilitation.  Additionally, deployment of 5 new mobile medical clinics (MMC) to west Mosul aims to immunize unvaccinated children and provide essential health services at all major mustering and reception sites and IDP camps.

“Urgent access to front line trauma care complemented with lifesaving health services, emergency immunization campaigns and vigilance against the risk of communicable outbreaks are our top priorities at this point considering the precarious conditions fleeing populations have to survive in under soaring temperatures” said Altaf Musani WHO Representative in Iraq.

Of the 180 000 persons expected to be in the old city, approximately 50 000 are women of reproductive age, who have had no access to any reproductive health  services and are vulnerable to different risks including complicated deliveries. UNFPA is providing emergency reproductive health services to these women through 5 maternity hospitals, 14 mobile and static delivery rooms and 35 mobile and static reproductive health clinics. UNFPA-supported services have been established in IDP camps as well as host communities in East and West Mosul, and are well positioned to serve women and girls in the old city of Mosul.

"UNFPA is well positioned to continue providing life-saving reproductive health services on the front-lines and strengthening referral pathways. We are grateful to the donors who help make this happen, namely Australia, Canada, ECHO, Japan, OFDA, CERF and the Humanitarian Pooled Funding," said Ramanathan Balakrishnan, UNFPA Representative in Iraq

WHO and other health cluster partners are appealing for urgent support to bridge the current funding gap of 85% to address these emergency health challenges in the context of Mosul operation and to assist over 6 million people in need of health services, nationwide.

Because we have antitank bombs and antipersonnel bombs that could wipe them completely out and only do surface damage to the Satanic Mosque. Soooooo, "WHAT DA PROBLEM IS"?

An updated version of Mosul's map showing the latest developments in the battle to oust ISIS from occupied districts in the city's right bank has been obtained by The Baghdad Post on Thursday.

On the map, the spots marked in green represent the previously ISIS-held areas that have been liberated.

As the map shows, the white spots represent the parts of the war-torn city where ISIS is still controlling.
In a statement, the Center said it renews its commitment to neutrality when covering stories of the battles and the other issues. Our aim is nothing but the truth, the statement concluded.

Iraqi Forces launched a major offensive on 19th of February to retake the western part of Mosul after declaring total control of the eastern part of the city on 24th of January as part of the military operations to liberate the city that started on 17th of October 2016.

ISIS turns sulfur spring in Mosul into mass execution platform

ISIS terrorist group has increased the pace of executions against civilians in the last ISIS-hold pocket of the city, sources exclusively told The Baghdad Post.

The terrorists turned the sulfur spring, which was used for curing purposes, into an execution platform, sources added.

Last May witnessed large executions of civilians over charges of cooperating with the security forces, refusing to comply with ISIS orders or attempting to escape from  ISIS-holding areas.

Eyewitness who fled ongoing fighting in Abu Tammam al-Zanjili in Mosul's right bank, told The Baghdad Post that his last contact with his relatives in the Old City was on May 23.

Other civilians who fled the city to al-Thawra district told security forces that ISIS turned the sulfur spring into a blood spring.  Civilians are taken to the spring at night then the terrorists shoot them in public. They used suppressors before shooting the victims.

Earlier in May, relief sources reported that ISIS execute about nine families daily. They shoot  mothers in front of their children then throw their bodies into the sulfur spring. The bodies then decompose because of the hot water and being exposed to the sunlight.

Elite soldiers can recapture Mosul's Old City in 3 hours - strategist

Displaced Iraqis
Displaced Iraqis

A military strategist told The Baghdad Post on Thursday that if elite soldiers, trained to fight in street war, were deployed, they will enter the Old City and recapture it within three hours.

Heavy shelling by Iranian Militias in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) artillery has killed many innocent civilians, local sources told the Baghdad Post.

The sources said that the bombing is indiscriminate and heavy because the districts have already fallen and ISIS full defeat is only a matter of time.

Makeshift shelters in Hawi al-Kanisa neighborhood in northwestern Mosul have received massive waves of displaced Iraqis, escaping the battles in al-Shifaa neighborhood and other districts in the Old city.

These districts are witnessing military confrontation between the security forces and ISIS terrorists.

As a result, civilians face many challenges. For example, they face the hardship of escaping these districts, reaching safe corridors under the control of the security forces, and moving to displacement centers.

Security forces, backed by International Coalition air raids and logistic support of the US army, have retaken eastern Mosul and half of its western part after six months of battles. These forces are focusing now on controlling the Old City.

It is estimated that there are a few of ISIS terrorists left in the second largest city of Iraq. It is expected that they will desperately defend the last pocket of the city that has been once their main stronghold in Iraq.
