Pompeo's policy sends a message: Baghdad must determine what is happening in Iraq not in Tehran

Pompeo sends a message: Baghdad has to determine what is happening in Iraq not in Tehran

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Saturday he was deeply concerned about a report on the transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Iraq.

"If this is true, it would be a flagrant violation of Iraqi sovereignty and Security Council resolution 2231," he wrote in a tweet on Twitter.

"Baghdad must determine what is happening in Iraq, not Tehran."

On Friday, Iranian, Iraqi and Western sources reported that Tehran had supplied ballistic missiles to Shiite militias that were fighting proxy in Iraq and that it was developing the capability to make more rockets there.

Any sign that Iran is preparing a stronger missile policy in Iraq would exacerbate the tension that has already increased between it and Washington after US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

Iranian, Iraqi and Western sources said that Tehran has provided ballistic missiles to Shiite militias fighting proxy in Iraq, and that ...

Iran turns Iraq into a "ballistic missile base" Iran

This would also embarrass France, Germany and Britain, the three European countries signatories to the nuclear agreement, which seeks to save the agreement despite the renewal of US sanctions on Tehran.

Three Iranian officials, two Iraqi intelligence sources and two Western intelligence sources said Iran had moved short-range ballistic missiles to allies in Iraq over the past few months. Five officials said they were helping those groups start making rockets.

This is from an Iranian news source

Iran has vehemently rejected as "false, meaningless and ludicrous" a recent media report claiming that Tehran has moved missiles to Iraq, saying it aimed to stoke Iranophobia in the region.

"What has been raised and published by some infamous cells and certain media about the transfer of Iranian missiles to Iraq is a nonsensical statement and sheer lie," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Saturday.

"The report is solely aimed at creating fears among regional countries" and is in line with Iranophobic policies, he added.

The Iranian spokesperson emphasized that such "totally false and ridiculous” reports have no purpose but to “affect Iran's foreign relations, particularly ties with its neighbors."Presstv reported.

Qassemi's remarks came a day after Reuters, in an exclusive report, quoted unnamed sources as claiming that Iran has given ballistic missiles to Shia fighters in Iraq and is developing the capability to build more there to deter attacks on its interests in the Middle East.

The report alleged that Iran has transferred short-range ballistic missiles to its allies in Iraq over the last few months.

The Islamic Republic's missile program and its regional presence has been the target of intensified Western propaganda over the past few months.

Iran has been lending military advisory support to Iraq and Syria as per requests by the two Arab countries’ governments in the face of foreign-backed Takfiri terrorism.

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said in May that the legitimate governments of Iraq and Syria have called for Iran's military advisory presence in their countries in order to help them fight terrorism.

"The ire of the US and this country's allies, who were the main creators and sponsors of Takfiri terrorism and the final losers of this battlefield, is understandable," the SNSC secretary added.

Pompeo warns of smuggling Iranian ballistic missiles into Iraq

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday called for investigating reports of smuggling Iranian ballistic missiles into Iraq, considering the move a clear violation of Iraq's sovereignty and the UN Security Council resolutions.

Earlier in the day, Pompeo stressed that the Trump Administration would support Iraq's efforts to form a "moderate, nationalist" government that would serve all Iraqis.

In a statement, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert saidPompeo spoke with Iraq's PM Haider Abadi and VP Ayad Allawy.

Pompeo's call with Abadi tackled the importance of safeguarding Iraq's sovereignty during this critical time.

The results of Iraq's elections were ratified two weeks ago, paving the way for a new parliament to convene and elect a president and a prime minister, who would form a new government.

The process is complicated by political wrangling. A coalition led by prominent Shiite cleric Moqtada Al Sadr won the largest number of seats.

Iran says to take measures against Abadi after he expelled head of IMIS

Observers said that Iran is no longer able to hide its positions rejecting the decisions of the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. They said that its response to Abadi's decision to dismiss Head of Iranian Militia in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) Falih Al Fayyad is not only blatant interference in Iraqi affairs but a threat to Iraq.

In a statement, Abadi said: "Given Fayyad's involvement in political and party activities and his desire to engage in political affairs, which is contrary to his sensitive security functions, Fayadh is being relieved of his post."

Image1_92018112617468279662.png

Spokesman for Iranian Foreign Ministry Bahram Qasimi said his country monitors all statements and positions issued by Iraqi leaders. He described Abadi's decision to expel Fayyad as a "wrong decision" and that Tehran is closely following what is happening in Iraq.

He underlined that Iran will announce its position towards Abadi's decision and will take the necessary measures in the coming days.

Image1_92018112822320433385.png

Observers pointed out that Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei and his entourage are no longer able to accept Abadi's recent decisions, in which he declared his total bias in favor of his homeland Iraq and his refusal to abide by Iran's instructions.

They stressed that Iran's outrage of Abadi's announcement of the commitment to U.S. economic sanctions imposed on Iran, which came in line with Iraq's interests. This was followed by the prime minister's decision to refuse IMIS' withdrawal from the Sunni cities. Then came Abadi's decision to deprive Fayyad of his post, a move which scattered all of Iran's plans.

Image1_92018112929952625821.png

Abadi's decisions were taken in accordance with Iraq's best interests and in respect of the will of its people, as this has boosted his popularity among the Iraqis, according to observers.

Experts told The Baghdad Post that Iran's actions are clear interference in the Iraqi internal affairs and are considered to be a threat to the Iraqi government, especially to Abadi who has taken his decisions in accordance with the best interests of his country and in respect of the will of the Iraqis.

What are You going to tell Your Countries NOW that Iran is moving ballistic missiles all over the place in direct violation of Security Council resolution 2231 ESPECIALLY using a neighboring Sovereign Country as a base to launch one or more proxy wars to include Civil War in Iran and regional Countries???!!!

Iran is in a desperate reach to complete their regional objectives on an accelerated schedule and know they can not possibly be successful. I suspect an immediate "about face" of all the other JCPOA signatories and supporters with fairly immediate consequences.

I do not think Iran's objectives will get much, if any, traction with world powers demanding Iran's retraction back to Iran of all their entities completely, to include IMIS and the IRGC, in fairly short order. Stop the dollar deal between Iraq and Iran

Stop the dollar deal between Iraq and Iran

Date of release: 2018/9/2 0:16 • 335 times read

[Ayna-Follow]
President of the Iranian Chamber of Commerce of Iraq Yahya al-Ishaq announced the suspension of the US dollar deal between the two countries in terms of trade exchanges, which are taking place between the two countries.

"The dollar will be replaced by other currencies such as the euro, the Iranian riyal and the Iraqi dinar," he said.
"Most of the trade exchanges will take place in alternative currencies," the head of the Iranian-Iraqi Chamber of Commerce said in a press statement. "Another part of the trade between Iranian exporters and Iraqi traders will be through a trade-off system or in consensual forms between the parties."
He said that "the volume of transfer of funds between Baghdad and Tehran through banks, very few, despite the existence of transactions between the two countries worth 8 billion dollars."

"The resolution of banking issues between the two countries should be one of the priorities of the main Iranian economy, in order to remove obstacles to the establishment of a joint Iranian-Iraqi bank," Yahya al-Ishaq said.
"Iraq is Iran's second largest trade partner after China," he said, adding that "Iran's exports to Iraq are very different from Iranian exports to China."
Prime Minister Haider al-Abbadi said in August that Baghdad rejects any economic sanctions against any country, especially neighboring countries, pointing out that it is a fundamental and strategic mistake.
Earlier Abadi stressed his country's commitment not to deal with the US dollar with Iran, and not with US sanctions, stressing the position of Iraq, which refuses to impose sanctions.
Washington has imposed sanctions against Iran in several areas, including bank transfers in US currency, metals, aluminum, steel and others, while energy and oil are in November.
The United States withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran in May, announcing the resumption of severe economic sanctions against Tehran, while the local Iranian currency has seen a significant devaluation of its value against foreign currencies.

Official: Iran, Iraq Exclude Dollar from Mutual Trade

Official: Iran, Iraq Exclude Dollar from Mutual Trade

TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of the Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce Yahya Al-e Eshaq announced that the two countries have stopped using dollar in trade relations.

"Dollar-based trade between Iran and Iraq has stopped and most exchanges are made in euro, rial and dinar," Al-e Eshaq said on Saturday.

He added that another part of exchanges between the Iranian and Iraqi exporters are made in the form of barter.

Al-e Eshaq said "only a small portion of the $8bln trade between Iran and Iraq is funneled through the banking sector".

In a relevant development on Wednesday, Iranian Ambassador to Baghdad Iraj Masjedi called on the Iraqi foreign ministry to replace dollar with Iran's national currency (rial) to issue visa for the country's pilgrims who are due to visit Iraq in Arbaeen ceremony, one of the currency swap moves Iran is making to counter the US sanctions.

Masjedi's remarks, made in a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jafari in Baghdad, were in line with Iran's policies to confront the US sanctions after Washington's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.

During Arbaeen ceremony the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hossein (AS), the third Shiite Imam, is commemorated.

Jafari, for his part, praised Iran for remaining beside Iraq in hard times, specially in the war on the ISIL terrorist group, and underlined Baghdad's preparedness to cooperate and coordinate efforts with Iran to hold Arabaeen ceremony.

Great question.

Why don't the US ground troops in Iraq covertly locate said missile batteries/warehouses and blow them up. Sneek in, plant bombs, sneek out, missles blow up. Of course leaving no proof that the US  MARSOC commandos were ever there.. Or we could locate them and lazer in our missles to blow up Iran's missles, Maybe we could pay the IDF to do it for us. Either or will work just fine. JMHO

Pompeo warns Iran against violating Iraqi sovereignty by supplying militias with rockets

The Euphrates -

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran on Saturday rejected a report by Reuters that Tehran had delivered missiles to Iraq and said it was aimed at damaging Iran's relations with its neighbors.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Twitter he was "very concerned" about reports that Iran had moved ballistic missiles into Iraq. Pompeo urged Iraq's leaders to speed up the formation of a new government after parliamentary elections on May 12.

"Such false and ridiculous news has no purpose but to influence Iran's foreign relations, especially with its neighbors," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasimi was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

Iranian, Iraqi and Western sources told Reuters Tehran had supplied ballistic missiles to Shi'ite groups that were fighting proxy in Iraq and that it was developing the capability to make more rockets there.

"These reports are intended only to raise concerns in the countries of the region."

"If it is true, this is a flagrant violation of Iraqi sovereignty and of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231," Pompeo said.
Pompeo referred to the resolution by which the UN Security Council ratified the nuclear deal signed in 2015 between Iran and six world powers and withdrew from it by US President Donald Trump this year. The administration has re-imposed sanctions on Tehran.

In a statement, State Department spokesman Heather Naort said Pompeo had spoken earlier to the Iraqi prime minister "to confirm US support for Iraq's efforts to form a modern and national Iraqi government."

She added that Pompeo also stressed the importance of protecting the sovereignty of Iraq at this sensitive time.

She added that the foreign minister also spoke with Iraqi Vice President Iyad Allawi to discuss political developments and relations between Baghdad and Arbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

Any indication that Iran is preparing for a stronger missile policy in Iraq would exacerbate the already growing tension with Washington after Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal.

This would also embarrass France, Germany and Britain, the three European countries signatories to the nuclear agreement, which seeks to save the agreement despite the renewal of US sanctions on Tehran.

Iranian Leader Strongly Rejects Chances for War

Iranian Leader Strongly Rejects Chances for War

TEHRAN (FNA)- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei reiterated his last month remarks that the chances of a war breaking out against Iran are zero, yet he urged the country's armed forces to enhance their deterrence power.

"Political calculations show that there is no chance for a military war, yet the armed forces are needed to boost their equipment and human capabilities vigilantly and through an efficient and agile management," Ayatollah Khamenei said at a meeting with senior commanders and officials of the Air Defense Base of the Islamic Republic of Iran's army here in Tehran on Sunday.

The Iranian leader termed the Army's Air Defense Base a very sensitive section of the Iranian Armed Forces that stands at the forefront of confrontation against enemy, and laid emphasis on the need for the enhancement of the capabilities and preparedness of the Air Defense Base.

In similar comments last month, Ayatollah Khamenei dismissed speculation about war with the US, reiterating that neither Iran is willing to initiate war against Washington nor does the US enjoy the self-confidence to open fire at Tehran late in August.

"Recently, the US officials have been talking blatantly about us. Beside sanctions, they talk about war and negotiations. They talk about a spirit of war to frighten the cowards," Ayatollah Khamenei said, addressing a large number of Iranian people from all walks of life in Tehran.

"In the matter of negotiations, they play a poor game. One of them says, negotiations with preconditions, another one says, negotiations without preconditions. Let me address the people on the matter in a few words: There will be no war, nor will we negotiate with the US. This is the gist of the word that all the Iranian people should know. The US has now suggested negotiations; this is not new. This has existed since the beginning of the revolution," he underlined.

Ayatollah Khamenei explained to the audience why Iran has decided not to negotiate with the United States, and asserted, "Why won’t we negotiate? The US negotiations formula is this; because the Americans rely on money and power, they consider negotiations as a commercial exchange; when the US wants to negotiate with a party, they determine their main goals, and then they won’t retreat even a step away from these goals; they demand the other party to pay a privilege immediately; and if the other party refuses to comply with them, they start to make a fuss, so the other party would surrender; the US itself does not pay anything in exchange for what it takes from the other party; the US only makes strong promises in order to enchant the other party with mere promises; in the final stage, after receiving all the immediate advantages, the US breach their own promises."

"This is the method of the American negotiations. Now should we negotiate with such a fraudulent government? The JCPOA was a clear example of this," Ayatollah Khamenei said, and added, "Even if we ever - impossible as it is - negotiated with the US, it would never ever be with the current US administration."

Ayatollah Khamenei banned any negotiations with the US, saying, "The Islamic Republic can negotiate with the US only when it reaches the power and sovereignty that would nullify US’s pressures and domineering efforts; when those efforts have no effect on Iran. Today this is not the case. Thus, I will ban negotiations with the US just as Imam (Khomeini) did."

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution slammed US rhetoric towards Iran, and stated, "The US has become more blatant and ruder in their rhetoric over the past few months. Previously they were not so observant of diplomatic etiquette in their speech either; however, they have become ruder towards all nations."

Ayatollah Khamenei drew an example of US’s blatancy in actions and rhetoric, and said, "The example of it is that during the last week, the Saudis committed two crimes: attacking a hospital and attacking a school bus with 40 or 50 innocent children on board. Do you have 8 or 9 year-olds at home? This is a dramatic tragedy. It truly breaks one’s heart. The news shook the global conscience. But how did the US react? Instead of condemning the crime, the US said, “We have strategic relations with Saudi Arabia.” Is this not shamelessness? What the US president did to two or three thousand children by separating them from their parents, putting them in cages because they were immigrants is an unprecedented crime in history."

Ayatollah Khamenei also addressed the recent economic problems of the country, calling "internal factors" as the source of the crisis.

"Scholars and many officials believe that the problem is internal. The problem of gold coin and foreign currency unfolded due to negligence and mismanagement," he said.

Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that sanctions may play a role in creating the current economic situation, but that domestic factors are stronger role players on the matter.

"Not that sanctions are not playing a role, but the main reasons lie in the measures taken within the country. If actions are taken more efficiently, more prudently, more swiftly and more firmly, sanctions cannot have much effect and they can be resisted."

"A stupid man tells the Iranian nation that our government spends our money on Syria. This is while his boss - the US president - has admitted that he has spent 7 trillion dollars in the Middle East without gaining anything in return," he said.

The Iranian leader further dismissed any chance for war between Tehran and Washington, saying, "No war will occur as, like before, we will never initiate a war; the US won't launch a war either because they know that it would certainly end to their detriment; this is because the Islamic Republic and Iranian nation have proved that any transgressor will be stricken a bigger blow. Even Reagan, the then President of the US - who was more powerful than the recent presidents - secretly sent McFarlane to Tehran for negotiations but he had to return after 24 hours without any outcome."

Baghdad: Reuters report of Iran moving missiles to Iraq is 'without evidence'

2 MIN READ

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday it was “astonished” at a Reuters report that Iran had moved missiles to Iraq and that the article was “without evidence”, but stopped short of denying its contents.

“Iraq is not obliged to respond to media reports that lack tangible evidence backing up their claims and allegations,” the ministry said in a statement.

“All state institutions in Iraq uphold Article 7 of the constitution, which prohibits the use of Iraqi land as a base or passage to be used in operations targeting the security of other states.”

Iranian, Iraqi and Western sources told Reuters that Iran had given ballistic missiles to Shi’ite proxies in Iraq and was developing the capacity to build more there.

The Iraqi government and military declined to comment at the time. In Sunday’s statement, the Foreign Ministry said it was “astonished at the allegations” contained in the report.

Iran on Saturday rejected the report, which it said aimed to hurt Iran’s ties with neighbors.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Twitter he was “deeply concerned” by news that Iran was transferring ballistic missiles into Iraq. He urged Iraqi leaders to form a new government quickly after a May 12 parliamentary election.

Any sign Iran is preparing a more aggressive missile policy in Iraq will exacerbate tensions between Tehran and Washington, already heightened by U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

It would also embarrass France, Germany and Britain, the three European signatories to the nuclear deal, as they have been trying to salvage the agreement despite new U.S. sanctions against Tehran.

According to three Iranian officials, two Iraqi intelligence sources and two Western intelligence sources, Iran has transferred short-range ballistic missiles to allies in Iraq over the last few months. Five of the officials said it was helping those groups to start making their own.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Leading opposition figures and the reformist movement in Iran, Mehdi Karroubi, demanded on Sunday the Council of Experts to open an investigation into the economic and military institutions linked to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an unprecedented rebellion that reflects public discontent over the corruption of the institutions of the leader and the exorbitant richness of its supervisors In which the country is suffering from an economic meltdown that is gradually worsening as the US sanctions against Tehran come into force in November.

Karoubi, under house arrest, accused the council of failing to carry out its responsibilities of monitoring the leader and associated activities in a remarkable shift of the Iranian opposition, which has been critical of the president's policies and excluding the guide from all criticism.

In a rare public statement, the Iranian opposition blamed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei for the deteriorating social and economic conditions in the country, which worsened with the return of US sanctions, after the corruption of the military and economic institutions close to him. The regime is preparing to suppress the expected protests by spending money on training. Paramilitary militias, the regime is likely to feel an impending social shock that could hit its members.

"If the Council of Experts has done its basic tasks, at least ask about the effectiveness of Commander Khamenei's strategy, which has brought the country to this deteriorating situation over the past 30 years."

In his letter, Karroubi stressed the need to open investigations into the economic and military institutions associated with Khamenei, blaming the latter for "the dire situation experienced by the Iranian people."

Karoubi stressed that the lack of compliance by the Council of Experts with its responsibilities for monitoring the Revolutionary Guard, the Basij militia, the judiciary, the Radio and Television Corporation and some economic institutions has caused great damage to the Iranian people. He criticized the Iranian opposition, not to open investigations with military leaders who intervene in the affairs of domestic and foreign policy and involved in oil sales transactions, stressing the occurrence of constitutional violations.

Karoubi, 80, a Shi'ite cleric who fought with reformist Mir Hossein Mousavi in the 2009 elections and has become a symbol of Iranians who staged mass protests after hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad returned to power in elections they believe were rigged.

Authorities have placed Karoubi, Moussaoui and Zahra Rahnwad, the wife of Mousavi, under house arrest since 2011 without trial by direct order from Khamenei.

The Supreme Leader is the chief of staff of the armed forces of Iran, who appoints the heads of the judiciary. The main ministers are chosen after his approval, and he has the final say on foreign policy and the nuclear program, while the powers of the president are limited.

The Iranian leader often blames his country's governments for not making progress in curbing high unemployment, inflation and inequality, as well as members of parliament, former presidents and Western powers.

Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had earlier attacked his country's judiciary over the imprisonment of his former assistant, Hamid Reza Baka'i, 63, for violating the leader's orders not to stand for election.

The pressure on Ahmadinejad and his associates has increased since he opposed the leader's recommendation not to run in the presidential elections to prevent a "polarization" in the country, which led to the rejection of the Guardian Council under Khamenei's dominance, the nomination of the former president and his aide on the pretext of "incapacity to run in the presidential elections." In an unprecedented letter sent to the leader, the former Iranian president warned that the people's discontent with the state administration had peaked, in a move analysts saw as a wave of fresh protests that the regime might not be able to tame as it did before.

Ahmadinejad said in his letter, "The dissatisfaction of the Iranian people with the administration of the state reached its peak, and this is disturbing the fundamentals of the revolution," accusing the judicial and security authorities of injustice of the people.

The Iranian regime is experiencing a deep political crisis, within its rival wings, in addition to the social crisis that has forced the people to demand the overthrow of the regime, prompting the symbols of conservative leaders, who were close to the Iranian leader, to uprising against the methods of his administration. Raise the hand on the upcoming elections, which many question its integrity.

The regime in Tehran has consistently excluded its critics and opponents by rejecting their candidacy and placing them under house arrest, a warning Ahmadinejad warned early on, in a move observers see as insufficient if it does not follow up with protest movements to prevent it.

Recent popular protests in dozens of Iranian provinces have revealed the collapse of the regime's pillars in Tehran, prompting reformist leader Hassan Rowhani to evoke the scenario of the fall of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, after all indications of scenario cloning are available again. In a pre-emptive step to quell the wave of social protests, the head of the Basij forces, Brigadier General Gholamhossein Ghib Prur, announced Saturday the start of the first stage of mobilizing "popular" security in order to strengthen internal security throughout the country.

The move, according to analysts, in anticipation of the outbreak of a wave of social protests could blow elements of the system with the date of the second package of US sanctions on Tehran, which is considered the most severe.

The impact of the sanctions is likely to be harsh on Iran's economy, which is facing difficulties that have in recent days sparked a wave of social protests against a high rate of unemployment and high inflation, while the Iranian riyal has lost about two-thirds of its value in six months.
