Iraqi forces faced stiff resistance from Daesh in northwest Mosul on Sunday after opening a new front against the militants there in a push to rout them from the city after seven months of fighting.

Trapped in a steadily shrinking area of the city, the militants are fighting back with a barrage of suicide car bombs and snipers concealed amongst hundreds of thousands of civilians they are effectively holding hostage.

Having gained a foothold in the northern Musherfa district last week, Iraqi forces are trying to push down into the handful of remaining districts held by Daesh in Mosul, including the Old City.

The Iraqi military said on Saturday the Musherfa district had been fully retaken, but officers told Reuters on Sunday there was still fighting there and smoke could be seen rising over the area by a Reuters reporter in east Mosul.

A colonel from the ninth armoured division, which is taking part in the offensive, said:

The new push from the northwest began last week after other fronts in the city’s southern districts stalled around the Old City where the iconic mosque from which Daesh leader proclaimed a modern-day caliphate is located.

Iraqi forces are backed by a US-led coalition which is carrying out airstrikes and advising them on the ground.

Iraqi officers said additional reinforcements from the Rapid Response Division had arrived in northwest Mosul on Sunday to help clear areas on the banks of the River Tigris that bisects the city.

“The brigade will participate in the battle to retake Hawi al-Kanisa and also help the ninth army division step up pressure on Daesh fighters,” said a Rapid Response officer on condition of anonymity.

Iraqi forces have launched a fresh operation to liberate the last remaining districts of the city of Mosul from Daesh terrorists. Meanwhile, the Iraqi prime minister has dismissed reports that his country has Okayed a US proposal to dispatch a new group of forces to Iraq. Haider al-Abadi stressed that no US forces will remain in Iraq once the Daesh terror group is completely defeated. Our correspondent Altaf Ahmad reports.

Slow progress as the noose tightens. I wouldn't put it past those ISIS pigs to booby trap the old Mosque and blow it up as last act of defiance. And to think the Sunnis embraced them as 'brothers' back in 2014. Look what they've done to their own people. So sad.

This map is similar but seems to show more area retaken from ISIS while a smaller part to the west appears to not fully be taken from ISIS compared to other maps.

 

It appears ISIS is collapsing rapidly in Mosul and we can all pray it will end soon for the Mosul residents and the Iraqis fighting to end terrorism. ISIS seems to be loosing militants rapidly so the progress of retaking the rest of Mosul should accelerate.

What I find so entertaining here is the fact that ISIS has lost the war and now down to fraction of what was once their empire. And still they refuse to just surrender and give it up. Boneified Bone Heads! They are dying for no reason at this point.....
