  1. This may help. NY Times article from 1991 reporting the revaluation of the Kuwaiti dinar Jul 19, 2013 When Iraq invaded Kuwait in August of 1990, the value of the Kuwaiti dinar dropped to about 5 cents. In other words, it took 20 Kuwaiti dinars to buy one dollar. In February of 1991 Iraq was expelled from Kuwait, and a month later, the banks revalued their currency to $3.47, the highest valued currency in the world. When this occurred, the New York Times reported the event on March 25, 1991. http://www.nytimes.com/1991/03/25/world/after-the-war-no-electricity-but-kuwait-reopens-its-banks.html At the same time, the UN put Iraq under trade sanctions, crashing the value of the Iraqi dinar (IQD) from $3.22 to about 4000 to the dollar. Their currency could only be spent in Iraq itself, and people had to carry around wads of 25,000 dinar notes to buy groceries. Then in 2003 coalition forces invaded Iraq and overthrew Saddam Hussein. By 2004 we gave them a new currency without Saddam's picture on it. The value soon doubled and went up to 2000 to the dollar. A few years ago the Central Bank of Iraq managed to stabilize the value at 1166 per dollar. On June 27, 2013 the UN removed Iraq from Chapter VII sanctions, allowing Iraq to regain control of close to $80 Billion in frozen funds that had been sitting in western banks since 1990. This also allowed Iraq to be reinstated on the world's banking network, as soon as they are ready. At the same time many expect to see the IQD revalued at or near its former position.

  2. I know all three of us have written or discussed this before. I believe that we have a good shot at getting this done by the end of the year. I try to step back from these single topic post to see what is happening overall. This new Oil Minister is really getting thing stright and the banking system is doing everything it can to draw up the Chunky Money. They are not going to announce that they are going to RV. Everyone on the planet would be buying dinar. They have to make it look like being a third world country would be a dramatic improvement and that the Dinar was the biggest scam ever. Banking institutions, countries, and international business would not be pumping money and setting up shop if this was a waste of time or a big scam.

  5. I agree with you, ChuckFinley, as well as Wiljor regarding the misinformation. Here is a link to a recent article saying they will not raise the value of the dinar against the dollar: The linked article plainly states, "The committee member said Sarhan Ahmed told all of Iraq [where] that " the central bank has no plans to raise the value of the dinar against the dollar," I, like you and Wiljor (and likely many others), think the misinformation is going to be put out there in fairly massive doses just prior to the revaluation to shake off as many speculators as possible. One possible side thought, if everyone had IQD and the IQD revalued at a significantly high rate, then most of the work force would quit their jobs. As a result, the economic system would collapse and goods would be scare making the prices sky rocket. Social mayhem would then likely take over. I thought I heard that Kuwait had some, what many would consider, bad news in the news media and then, BOOM, Kuwait restored their currency to the pre Saddam invasion level. I did some internet searches to no avail to find an article that there was a full page New York Times ad saying China was not going to adjust their currency value in the 1990s and then, BOOM, China adjusted their currency value.

  6. This isn't smoke or a negative message from the CBI, here's why. Back in July when the IMF finalized their report, they projected the reserves to fall to 42.7 billion by the end of 2016, and they continue to project the reserves to diminish all the way through 2020 to a projected 31.6 billion. So what's important here is Iraq is nearly 10 billion above the projected total for 2016 which subsequently extends the number of months in which they can pay for imported goods from 7.8 months to nearly 10 months. This is important to show how they are actually learning how to manage their money appropriately by reducing corruption, and managing payments for imports, and this also ties to the control they are showing at limiting the dollar at the CBI window ... big time corruption and laundering control! In other articles they are allowing $3000 usd to travelers ... its all about controlling the currency. Paying for their imports has been a huge problem with them and then they were using the money they owed for imports to balance their annual budget. So the amount of reserves at this point is huge.

  7. I know that will upset folks, but I am not a fan of college sports as they have evolved to become. It's bad enough with the NFL prospecting 18 year old freshmen, all that glitter, kids just don't understand the price most guys pay for an NFL career, like a dozen surgeries before age 40, lifetime disabilities that severely diminish their quality of life, and the sad reality that 80% of pro players are dead broke 5 years after their last contract, some with physical limitations so severe they can collect permanent disability. I love football, I love my Seahawks, but I did not sleep very well when my son was playing college football, and I was secretly happy when complications from an elective surgery caused him to miss a camp obligation, it gave me time to help motivate him to reexamine his goals. As a high school football coach he sees kids with big dreams take even bigger hits, and instead focuses on the life skills developed by the team sport. If there wasn't so much money in the "amateur" programs we would see a much purer play, one that I could easily get into. Please forgive the tirade, we almost lost our son in the midst of the "complication", and having to stand outside a hospital room as a crash cart is wheeled in along with a host of ER personnel, then watching as they "lost" him, twice, get him back, I'll never forget seeing his body gasp as his heart started beating again the second time. Three emergency trips because blood clots were blocking arteries, the months on stupid expensive blood thinner, waiting for the next collapse. Even with the best, most high tech helmet money could buy, he got three concussions, but being a dedicated player, just ignored until now, when the constant trauma has begun to manifest. All that, just so he could get some work done to his Achilles Tendon that would make him faster. All the division trophies in the world do nothing to replace quality of life. Here's a school that gets it.

  13. “Unborn Child” at Forty Stella Morabito Unborn Child is the title of an album boldly released in 1974 by the rock duo Seals and Crofts at the height of their popularity. Ever hear of it? Didn’t think so. Even if you were a pop music fan during the 1970’s you likely have no recollection of the album, or its title song, in large part because Unborn Child was boycotted. But chances are good you’ve heard Seals and Crofts’ big hits, which include gold Billboard singles like “Summer Breeze,” “Diamond Girl,” and “We May Never Pass this Way Again.” In fact, you can still hear these songs today on oldies radio stations, or in grocery stores, elevators, or any establishment where soft-rock oldies are played. The lyrics of the song “Unborn Child” were offered to Seals and Crofts by Lana Day Bogan, the wife of the duo’s recording engineer. She had seen a documentary about abortion and was moved to write a poem that began: Oh little baby, you’ll never cry, nor will you hear a sweet lullabye. Oh unborn child, if you only knew just what your momma was plannin’ to do. You’re still a-clingin’ to the tree of life, but soon you’ll be cut off before you get ripe. Oh unborn child, beginning to grow inside your momma, but you’ll never know. Oh tiny bud, that grows in the womb, only to be crushed before you can bloom. Mama stop! Turn around, go back, think it over. Now stop, turn around, go back, think it over. Stop, turn around, go back think it over. At Bogan’s suggestion, Jim Seals put the poem to music As you can imagine, coming in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, Unborn Child was greeted by a lot of raw emotion. And the album was quickly suppressed. There were boycotts of the song by radio stations and picketing of Seals and Crofts concerts by pro-abortion groups. As we all know, the Roe decision not only legalized abortion, but served to stoke bitterness and deep division throughout American society. Dash Crofts told interviewer Bill de Young in 1993: “Warner Brothers warned us against it. They said, ‘This is a highly controversial subject, we advise that you don’t do this.’ And we said, ‘But you’re in the business to make money; we’re doing it to save lives. We don’t care about the money.’” According to de Young, “The critics tore the record to pieces, and Seals and Crofts with it. . . . Unborn Child hurt Seals and Crofts’ reputation—it was as if they had crossed that thin line, that sacrosanct divider that separated their music from their religious beliefs.” Jim Seals and Dash Crofts wrote their music to reflect—though never to proselytize—their Bahà’í faith, which sees all humanity as connected in one family. They understood the unborn child to be simply a part of that universal whole. But their detractors, well, not so much. The controversy definitely lowered the profile of Seals and Crofts and slowed down their career. Yes, they were able to follow Unborn Childwith a few more albums and a few more songs that charted well at a time when the pro-abortion lobby was just gearing up to silence all opposition. Nevertheless, Unborn Child was very politically incorrect and Seals and Crofts paid the price for that. Forty years later, the decision to release Unborn Child looks even more courageous and wise. As the nation continues to rethink the wisdom of Roe v. Wade, we might wonder: Could Unborn Child experience a rebirth? In essence, Seals and Crofts chose to shun worldly success in favor of performing a beautiful act of mercy. As Crofts himself said, “I think we got more good results out of it than bad because a lot of people called us and said, ‘We’re naming our children after you, because you helped us decide to save their lives with that song.’ That was very fulfilling to us.” Indeed, what a magnificent choice.

The main thing to remember is if you purchased the Kuwait dinar at the lower price, and turned it in after the war when the price went up to 3.47 then you had to have made money. Many who are currency savvy would have recognized this and jumped all over it. But would they have advertised it? Probably not.

  22. without even reading the article I can answer the premise..... Religion by definition equates to man's feeble and doomed to fail attempts to reach GOD...like the Tower of Babel....IMHO GOD does not want your "religion", my "religion" or anyone's "religion" for that matter....GOD desires a relationship one which HE HIMSELF fostered by sending HIS SON to die for the sins of all mankind....AS HE PROMISED IN THE GARDEN AFTER THE FALL......and because as Paul told Timothy : 1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Into the breech many are willing to run and offer their "spin" on "religion" for filthy lucre (dirty money) : Peter: 1Pe 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Paul : *** 1:11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. Jesus: Mat 10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. GOD walked with Adam in the cool of the day.....and having created man in HIS own image and likeness has made a way for ALL to have that same RELATIONSHIP..... though people don't often relish the simplicity of the Gospel preferring instead a series of does and don't by which they can measure themselves against their fellow man or some man-made standard of righteousness... to set the record straight I offer three simple Scriptural truths for everyone's consideration: Jesus/Yeshua said : Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Joh 14:7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. John : Rev 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Rev 13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear. Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. These simple three Words in the Ancient Hebrew languages were originally a series of pictographic symbols that read: the Son of GOD crushed His hand on a cross...... religion therefore really IS an opiate of the people whereas relationship with the Lord is free and the only way to reach GOD... Eagle sermon ended !!

  28. The Calculus of Conflict in the Middle East Posted on September 16, 2016 by iMFdirect By Christine Lagarde As world leaders head to New York this week for the United Nations General Assembly, there is still no end to the heart-breaking images of war-torn cities in the Middle East and North Africa, and of a massive exodus of people looking for sanctuary and opportunities to sustain a livelihood. Within the region, more than 20 million people are displaced, and a further 10 million are refugees—a scale not seen since the end of World War II. The immense humanitarian costs that these conflicts inflict are difficult to grasp. The economic consequences are also significant. Much of the productive capital in conflict zones has been destroyed, personal wealth and income losses are enormous, and human capital deteriorates with the lack of jobs and education. The Fund, along with the international community, will be called upon to assist in rebuilding the economy once the conflicts end. We have therefore looked more deeply into the economic challenges brought about by these conflicts, as well as into options for policymakers on managing the post-conflict recovery. Let me highlight three key findings that were published in an IMF staff paper today. First, the economic costs of conflicts are massive. In addition to tragic loss of life and physical destruction, war and internal strife in countries such as Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Yemen have exacerbated already high levels of poverty, unemployment, and pushed countries further into fragility erasing previous development gains for a whole generation. For example, in Syria school dropout rates reached 52 percent in 2013 and life expectancy fell to 56 years from 76 years before the conflict. Conflicts have also driven up inflation, weakened fiscal and financial positions, caused deep recessions and damaged institutions. For example, after four years of intense fighting, Syria’s output is now estimated to be less than half its level in 2010, before the conflict, while inflation surged by almost 300 percentage points in May 2015, the latest available month of data. Yemen lost an estimated 25-35 percent of its GDP in 2015 alone. These are staggering numbers. Conflicts leave deep marks on economies. We estimate that even with a relatively high annual growth rate of 4.5 percent, it would take Syria more than 20 years just to rebound to its 2010 pre-conflict GDP level. Yet, the impact of conflicts is not confined to national borders. There are also powerful spillovers to neighboring countries, such as Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Turkey, and beyond (see Chart). To varying degrees, these countries are exposed to the challenges of hosting large numbers of refugees, weaker confidence and security, and declining social cohesion. All this affects the quality of institutions and their ability to undertake much needed economic reforms. A second major finding is that appropriate policies can limit the immediate impact of conflicts. This means: Protecting economic institutions. Experience has shown that keeping core government institutions functioning in times of conflict—such as fiscal agents and central banks – is key to maintain life-saving services to people. Such institutions provide wages and salaries, health, and other services. Prioritizing spending. Conflicts are associated with greater fiscal pressures. Spending on security and military increase just as government revenues drop. In such an environment, prioritizing spending is critical to ensure that essential services, including shelter, are maintained to protect the most vulnerable groups. Ensuring macroeconomic stability. Fiscal and external imbalances increase during conflicts, and central banks tend to take on a greater role in financing governments and facilitating economic activity—as happened in Yemen and Libya. The resulting rise in inflation and loss of currency reserves may require the use of nontraditional tools and administrative measures to maintain some degree of macroeconomic control. Third, external partners, including the IMF, all have a role to play in helping countries to confront, and eventually overcome, conflict. The priority is first and foremost to alleviate human suffering and meet the immediate needs of those affected by conflicts. The IMF has been an important partner in these efforts—for example, by accommodating refugee or security-related outlays in our programs with Iraq, Jordan and Tunisia, as well as through our policy advice and capacity building activities throughout the region. We are also hoping to catalyze additional donor support for countries hosting refugees. At the London Conference for Supporting Syria and the Region in February, donors committed to funding humanitarian and development activities to the tune of $5.9 billion and $5.5 billion for 2016 and 2017–20, respectively. Even if all these pledges were fulfilled, they would not be enough given the magnitude of the crisis. Moreover, any financing should come through grants and concessional loans to reduce the financial burden on recipient countries. Over the longer term, the priority is to provide scaled-up development aid to help rebuild infrastructure and institutions, and, more broadly, strengthen economic and social resilience across the region. Here too, the IMF stands ready to help with a macroeconomic toolkit and experience gained from many years of working in post-conflict zones around the world. The international community has a major responsibility in helping countries in the region overcome this situation. We are ready to do our part. https://blog-imfdirect.imf.org/2016/09/16/the-calculus-of-conflict-in-the-middle-east/ IMF says Mideast conflicts wiped out gains of a generation Sep 16, 2016 The Associated Press 0 AMMAN, Jordan – Conflicts in Middle Eastern countries such as Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Yemen have erased “development gains for a whole generation,” including driving up already high levels of poverty and unemployment, the head of the International Monetary Fund said Friday. The international community must be prepared to scale up long-term development aid in the region to rebuild infrastructure and institutions, IMF chief Christine Lagarde wrote in a blog accompanying a report by the fund on the economic cost of conflict in the Middle East. More than $11 billion pledged by donor countries for Syria and the region through 2020, if indeed delivered, “would not be enough given the magnitude of the crisis,” she wrote. Aid should come in the form of grants and concessional loans to ease the financial burden on the countries receiving the support, she added. Lagarde noted that more than 20 million people in the region are displaced and an additional 10 million are refugees, more than at any time since World War II. “The international community has a major responsibility in helping countries in the region overcome this situation,” she wrote. “We are ready to do our part.” The IMF report and Lagarde’s comments were released ahead of a high-level U.N. summit next week on refugees and migrants. The fund said that since the middle of the 20th century, the Middle East and North Africa have experienced more frequent and severe conflicts than any other parts of the world. Conflict has pushed countries like Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Yemen “further into fragility, erasing previous development gains for a whole generation,” Lagarde wrote. For example, Syria’s economic output, or Gross Domestic Product, is estimated to be less than half of what it was in 2010, a year before the outbreak of conflict there. Inflation, meanwhile, rose by almost 300 percentage points in May 2015. Yemen lost between 25 per cent and 35 per cent of its GDP in 2015, the report said. http://www.canadianbusiness.com/business-news/imf-says-mideast-conflicts-wiped-out-gains-of-a-generation/
