US evangelical magazine calls for removal of 'grossly immoral' Trump

Washington (AFP) - Christianity Today, a leading US evangelical Christian publication, said Thursday that President Donald Trump is "morally lost and confused" and should be removed from office.

In an editorial, the magazine said it generally steers clear of politics but "we do feel it necessary from time to time to make our own opinions on political matters clear."

"The facts in this instance are unambiguous," it said.

"The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president's political opponents," Christianity Today said.

"That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral."

Christianity Today was founded by Billy Graham, a prominent Christian evangelist who died last year, but the Graham family is no longer associated with the publication.

Franklin Graham, Billy Graham's son, is also an influential Christian evangelical leader and a staunch Trump supporter. His ministry publishes its own magazine, Decision.

Christianity Today, which has a circulation of around 130,000, said Trump has "dumbed down the idea of morality in his administration.

"He himself has admitted to immoral actions in business and his relationship with women, about which he remains proud," it said.

"His Twitter feed alone -- with its habitual string of mischaracterizations, lies, and slanders -- is a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused."

Christianity Today said the congressional hearings that led to Trump's impeachment by the House of Representatives on Wednesday "have illuminated the president's moral deficiencies for all to see."

"Trump's evangelical supporters have pointed to his Supreme Court nominees, his defense of religious liberty, and his stewardship of the economy, among other things, as achievements that justify their support of the president," it said.

"We believe the impeachment hearings have made it absolutely clear... that President Trump has abused his authority for personal gain and betrayed his constitutional oath."

"Can we say with a straight face that abortion is a great evil that cannot be tolerated and, with the same straight face, say that the bent and broken character of our nation's leader doesn't really matter in the end?" the magazine asked.

"Whether Mr. Trump should be removed from office by the Senate or by popular vote next election -- that is a matter of prudential judgment," it said. "That he should be removed, we believe, is not a matter of partisan loyalties but loyalty to the Creator of the Ten Commandments."

Trump enjoys solid support among white evangelical Christians although a Fox News poll in October found that those backing him had slipped from 81 percent in the 2016 election to around 70 percent now.

Have they seen the light? Will their members choose Trump over God? This is shocking for them to release this right now. Or it a reminder during Christmas that we need to forget politics and remember our faith and values?

No problem... I'm just really interested in the response to this... It surprises me that Billy Graham's organization put out a bold and for many a decisive statement.

There is more in the article than what you posted.....that said it is an opinion piece.....written by an author who shares the opinion that Trump tried to alter the elections by suggesting Ukaine investigate the Bidens.....The current DOJ is researching that.....Pelosi's son as well.

Billy Graham was a founder of this publication.....and his Son Franklin supports Trump......opinions written in this publication shouldn't be taken as the Grahams opinions

20 years ago they expressed similar thoughts on Bill Clinton.....so they are consistant in thier publications on morals...

The yahoo reprint conveniently left out some of the original articles information on the 3 year process to impeach Trump...

Anyhow.....I always like to go to the source, especially on a yahoo reprint......they usually cherry pick or omit to slant the story to ther liking....    CL

Trump Should Be Removed from Office

It’s time to say what we said 20 years ago when a president’s character was revealed for what it was.

Trump Should Be Removed from Office
Get Free Weekly Updates of CT:

In our founding documents, Billy Graham explains that Christianity Today will help evangelical Christians interpret the news in a manner that reflects their faith. The impeachment of Donald Trump is a significant event in the story of our republic. It requires comment.

The typical CT approach is to stay above the fray and allow Christians with different political convictions to make their arguments in the public square, to encourage all to pursue justice according to their convictions and treat their political opposition as charitably as possible. We want CT to be a place that welcomes Christians from across the political spectrum, and reminds everyone that politics is not the end and purpose of our being. We take pride in the fact, for instance, that politics does not dominate our homepage.

That said, we do feel it necessary from time to time to make our own opinions on political matters clear—always, as Graham encouraged us, doing so with both conviction and love. We love and pray for our president, as we love and pray for leaders (as well as ordinary citizens) on both sides of the political aisle.

Let’s grant this to the president: The Democrats have had it out for him from day one, and therefore nearly everything they do is under a cloud of partisan suspicion. This has led many to suspect not only motives but facts in these recent impeachment hearings. And, no, Mr. Trump did not have a serious opportunity to offer his side of the story in the House hearings on impeachment.

But the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.

The reason many are not shocked about this is that this president has dumbed down the idea of morality in his administration. He has hired and fired a number of people who are now convicted criminals. He himself has admitted to immoral actions in business and his relationship with women, about which he remains proud. His Twitter feed alone—with its habitual string of mischaracterizations, lies, and slanders—is a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused.

Trump’s evangelical supporters have pointed to his Supreme Court nominees, his defense of religious liberty, and his stewardship of the economy, among other things, as achievements that justify their support of the president. We believe the impeachment hearings have made it absolutely clear, in a way the Mueller investigation did not, that President Trump has abused his authority for personal gain and betrayed his constitutional oath. The impeachment hearings have illuminated the president’s moral deficiencies for all to see. This damages the institution of the presidency, damages the reputation of our country, and damages both the spirit and the future of our people. None of the president’s positives can balance the moral and political danger we face under a leader of such grossly immoral character.

This concern for the character of our national leader is not new in CT. In 1998, we wrote this:

The President's failure to tell the truth—even when cornered—rips at the fabric of the nation. This is not a private affair. For above all, social intercourse is built on a presumption of trust: trust that the milk your grocer sells you is wholesome and pure; trust that the money you put in your bank can be taken out of the bank; trust that your babysitter, firefighters, clergy, and ambulance drivers will all do their best. And while politicians are notorious for breaking campaign promises, while in office they have a fundamental obligation to uphold our trust in them and to live by the law.

Article continues below
YEG_300x250.png

And this:

Unsavory dealings and immoral acts by the President and those close to him have rendered this administration morally unable to lead.

Unfortunately, the words that we applied to Mr. Clinton 20 years ago apply almost perfectly to our current president. Whether Mr. Trump should be removed from office by the Senate or by popular vote next election—that is a matter of prudential judgment. That he should be removed, we believe, is not a matter of partisan loyalties but loyalty to the Creator of the Ten Commandments.

To the many evangelicals who continue to support Mr. Trump in spite of his blackened moral record, we might say this: Remember who you are and whom you serve. Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency. If we don’t reverse course now, will anyone take anything we say about justice and righteousness with any seriousness for decades to come? Can we say with a straight face that abortion is a great evil that cannot be tolerated and, with the same straight face, say that the bent and broken character of our nation’s leader doesn’t really matter in the end?

We have reserved judgment on Mr. Trump for years now. Some have criticized us for our reserve. But when it comes to condemning the behavior of another, patient charity must come first. So we have done our best to give evangelical Trump supporters their due, to try to understand their point of view, to see the prudential nature of so many political decisions they have made regarding Mr. Trump. To use an old cliché, it’s time to call a spade a spade, to say that no matter how many hands we win in this political poker game, we are playing with a stacked deck of gross immorality and ethical incompetence. And just when we think it’s time to push all our chips to the center of the table, that’s when the whole game will come crashing down. It will crash down on the reputation of evangelical religion and on the world’s understanding of the gospel. And it will come crashing down on a nation of men and women whose welfare is also our concern.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump, who has attacked many news organizations during his career in politics, found a new target Friday: Christianity Today, the faith-focused magazine founded by the iconic evangelical preacher Billy Graham.

Trump lashed out at the publication, calling it a "far left magazine" on Twitter the day after Christianity Today posted an editorial calling for him to be removed from office. Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives on Wednesday and faces possible removal in a Senate trial next year.

"Christianity Today, knows nothing about reading a perfect transcript of a routine phone call and would rather have a Radical Left nonbeliever, who wants to take your religion & your guns, than Donald Trump as your President," Trump said.

In an editorial posted on Thursday, Christianity Today said the House was justified in approving impeachment articles over allegations Trump pressured Ukraine into investigating political opponent Joe Biden.

"The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents," the magazine said. "That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral."

A far left magazine, or very “progressive,” as some would call it, which has been doing poorly and hasn’t been involved with the Billy Graham family for many years, Christianity Today, knows nothing about reading a perfect transcript of a routine phone call and would rather.....

Christianity Today called on the Senate to convict Trump and remove him from office, calling it "not a matter of partisan loyalties but loyalty to the Creator of the Ten Commandments."

The Republican-run Senate is expected to acquit Trump in the trial.

In his harangue against Christianity Today, Trump said "no President has done more for the Evangelical community, and it’s not even close."

In the 2016 presidential election, Trump won 80% of the votes from whites who declared themselves born-again or evangelical Christians, according to exit polling.

While Billy Graham died in 2018, the magazine says it is still guided by his spirit. In its editorial calling for Trump's removal, Christianity Today said that "we do feel it necessary from time to time to make our own opinions on political matters clear – always, as Graham encouraged us, doing so with both conviction and love."

Franklin Graham, Billy Graham's son and a Trump supporter, tweeted that his father "knew @realDonaldTrump, believed in him & voted for him. He believed Donald J. Trump was the man for this hour in history for our nation."

Other news organizations editorial boards have called for Trump's conviction and removal, and been subject to presidential blowback – including USA TODAY.

On social media, critics of Trump noted that Christianity Today is a conservative publication and mocked the president for his criticism.

"No one would call Christianity Today 'progressive' but you. Sad!" tweeted Daniel W. Drezner, a professor of international politics with The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

I wish everyone who comes to DinarVets daily and argues about religion would instead come on and share what chapter of the Bible they had read and meditated on that day and which scripture in particular the Holy Spirit had spoken to them.  Some, I suspect, have not opened a Bible in a while.

First off, I did not neg you.  2nd, I said this was my opinion.  3rd you indicated earlier that Grahan was still associated with this group which gave false pretenses.  You didn't have to include false presumptions but you did to further strengthen your quest to find fault with others that still support Trump.  Billy Graham is dead but they used his remarks from 20 years ago, which is indeed still moral factors today but we are still to choose our Presidents based on the best that we see fit.  The lesser of 2 evils is never a good choice but this is what we have at the moment.  You know as well as I that what the Dems have done is wrong....morally and constitutionally .

If you had not added your little false tidbit to further your agenda, this piece would not have brought my attention.  But you did.  Why add or lie like the media and Dems.  This is what gives strength to the American people.  These are the things that continue to make us stand.  No matter how immoral Trump has been, he has brought hard work and kept the promises that he made to us.  How can we stone a man when all are guilty of the same or worse.  Revenge is Gods job.

You are joking correct? You see the onslaught of cowards who really have nothing to add... But I thought I would see some intelligent post on this story. It is rather big news coming from a strong part of his base. And the fact his response is to slam them makes it even more interesting...

So thank you for that. But it still shows a big part of his base is considering their support for Trump based on their faith... That is important. The other thing that was somewhat of a surprise was Trump's response. Not all but some Christians are going to take offense to his unhinged tweet.

As they say, there are no sacred cows, and it looks like Trump is now going to divide Christians by forcing them to make a choice. Your morals and convictions or him... I have read where people believe God sent us Trump and my first reaction was that's insane, but thinking about it, maybe it is true. Perhaps God sent Trump to test his flock and see where their loyalty lies.

This liberal clown that wrote that article is about as serious about Christianity as Pelosi is about her Catholicism. They both selectively use it to wrap themselves in self righteous BS and beat their opposition over the head with it at the same time. Shameful and disgusting, but that is what our country has become.

Are you suggesting the magazine, it's staff and the editor who wrote are doing it for political gain? Is calling out the immoral acts of our president shameful?

Ba. As I have said in the past, there are many things as I dislike about Trump.  When he goes against God it will be my final standing for him.  I still don't know how heart but I do know that even as a Christian, we all fall especially in our early days of Christianity.  This isn't  an excuse for him or myself. I just know the Lord grows us as we continue to walk in His ways.  Trump does need to walk lightly on this very matter.
