Iraq President Says Ready to Resign

BasNews 26/12/2019 - 15:43 Published in Iraq

ERBIL — Iraqi President Barham Salih said on Thursday that he is ready to hand in his resignation amid the deepening tensions over the nomination of a new prime minister.

In a letter to Iraqi parliament, Salih said he would rather step down than nominating a controversial figure for the position of premiership.

He explained in his letter that the Iraqi constitution does not allow him to reject a candidate from the largest parliamentary block, he is not willing to approve the same figure nominated by pro-Iranian Bina Alliance.

According to the letter, Salih does not approve Asaad al-Eidani because he is already rejected by protesters.

Adil Abdul Mahdi resigned from premiership last month following a wave of violent protests across Iraq.

The President of the Republic is counting on the last moments to withdraw Iraq to international custody

Baghdad / Obelisk: After defining the largest bloc within the parliament, formally by the Federal Court and Parliament, the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, began putting his duties to the test. Withdraw Iraq to international custody or the emergency government. "

The deputies demanded that Saleh be "convicted" of the constitutional oath. In their claim, they went to the presidency and members of the Federal Supreme Court.

The deputies stressed the need to "support a candidate acceptable to all to block the way for the President of the Republic, and prevent him from withdrawing Iraq to the international trusteeship or the emergency government."

Meanwhile, well-informed sources told Al-Masalla correspondent that President Saleh is being subjected to "American pressure that prevented him from appointing the largest bloc candidate."

A number of deputies are campaigning to collect signatures to dismiss the President of the Republic, who, under various pressures, put it before Parliament on Thursday.

The deputies supporting the dismissal accuse the president of "treason and violating the constitution, and the delay and procrastination in presenting the candidate for prime minister," which led to the start of that campaign.

Most forces, at the media level, warn against assigning any party candidate, threatening that this would "push Iraq into the unknown and lead to complete chaos."

Since the expiry of the constitutional deadline granted to Barham Salih to nominate a new prime minister, instead of the resigned Adel Abdel Mahdi, the biased and partisan president, who has always made a fictional smile, and whose demonstrators have portrayed his image in the arenas, has sought to polish “his person” and appear as an official standing “with” The demonstrators are against the political class, which is part of it. Rather, it is a blatant example of the outrageous wealth of Iraqi money, as well as the tremendous privileges it enjoys with its presidential regiment, the first involved in killing the demonstrators.

This was not hidden. In the first moments of the demonstrations, members of the Presidential Guard Regiment fired on the demonstrators, while the leader of Asa’ib al-Haq revealed, via satellite channels, that one of the three presidencies was involved in the conspiracy against Iraq, in a clear indication of Barham Salih.

Informed sources say Barham's moves, that the President of the Republic, who looks at his position as a specifically regional "merit" of Sulaimaniyah, and disposes of his positions accordingly, delays the assignment of a new prime minister, with external orders, especially since he represents a prominent tool in foreign intrusion on the paths of choice, I counted on making matters worse for as long as possible, after the plot that he led in implicating the security forces in "killing the demonstrators" failed, to resort to a new option, which is the escalation of the conflict between the Shiite blocs around the largest bloc, as well as the clash already existing between the political forces, so that the time period After the resignation of Adel Abdel-M Under the leadership of Barham, who is allowed by the constitution to assume the presidency of the executive branch, this will provide an opportunity for him to turn against the "Shiites" of the Prime Minister, in favor of the forces that move the "Barham doll".

From that moment, Barham seeks to suggest to the demonstrators that he is seeking a candidate for prime minister from among them, to achieve the overlooked plan to drain the options up to the edge of the abyss, at which Gemayel will stand, and they are forced to accept the options of the foreign scheme that Saleh hides behind his false smile.

Iraqi president says he would rather quit than name PM rejected by protesters

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi President Barham Salih refused on Thursday to designate the nominee of an Iran-backed parliamentary bloc for prime minister, saying he would rather resign than appoint someone to the position who would be rejected by protesters.

The Bina bloc, led by Iran-backed militia leader Hadi al-Amiri, had nominated Basra Governor Asaad al-Edani to be the next prime minister.

But Salih said in a statement that appointing Edani would not placate protesters demanding an independent prime minister with no party affiliation or help calm the unrest that has rocked the country.

He said that because the constitution does not give him the right to reject nominees for the premiership, he was ready to quit.

“Out of my desire to stop blood and maintain peace, and with due respect to Asaad al-Edani, I refuse to nominate him,” Salih said. “Therefore I put my willingness to resign the post of president to members of parliament so that they decide as representatives of the people what they see fit.”

Mass protests have gripped Iraq since Oct. 1 and the protesters, most of them young, are demanding an overhaul of a political system they see as profoundly corrupt and keeping most Iraqis in poverty. More than 450 people have been killed.

Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi resigned last month as the protests continued, but he has remained in office in a caretaker capacity.

Sources in Salih’s office said the president left Baghdad on Thursday for his hometown of Sulaimaniya in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq and that he would deliver a televised speech later.😊

The  most appropriate for the Iraqi situation now is the formation of a rescue government backed by USA.

The alphabet of national independence disappeared, the fabric of Iraqi national unity disintegrated, and the Arab characteristic backbone of the Iraqi formation was broken, and wars of displacement and sectarian separation took place between the Sunnis and Shiites of Iraq, which was instinctively realized by the Shiite uprising crowd, and their angry revolutions continued, until they culminated in the recent continuous uprising, whose youths are flocking to the death and martyrdom, to seek the restoration of the Arabism of Iraq and its liberation from the bond of dual humiliation, set by the American occupation and Iranian hegemony, and with a heroic determination apparent among the revolutionaries who want to restore Iraq to the Iraqis first. There is no value in any talk of democracy in an occupied and humiliated country, as the democracy is not a means of distraction and blindness, but rather a means of building the authority of a free people.

The 170 deputies announce their position on the decision of the Iraqi President

Shafaq News / The 170 deputies, who signed the specifications of the next prime minister, announced their refusal to present the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, for his resignation or even thinking about it.
The 170 deputies had previously asked the President of the Republic to submit an independent candidate to head the next government, and holders of Iraqi citizenship only, and has not received any position since 2003.
The deputies said in a press statement, "After seeing the President's message addressed to Parliament, we announce our clear position by rejecting the resignation or even hinting at it, and we stress that national and popular options are the final word in the form and features of the next prime minister away from partisanship and quotas. In line with the aspirations of the Iraqi people and the steps for reform and change. "
The Iraqi president, Barham Salih, apologized for assigning the "building block" candidate, Asaad Al-Eidani, to head the government, confirming his personal willingness to resign from the post of President of the Republic.
The president refused to assign Al-Aidani, as a candidate for prime minister, and he is the third candidate who protesters refuse to assign to the position, after Parliament member Muhammad Shi'a Al-Sudani and Minister of Higher Education in the resigned government, Qusay Al-Suhail.
On Wednesday, protestors of Tahrir Square, in the center of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, announced their refusal to assign Al-Eidani to take over the next government, to succeed resigned Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi.
The protesters forced the Mahdi government to resign in early December, and they insist on the departure and accountability of all political elites accused of corruption and waste of state funds, which have governed since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003.

Two Major Iraqi Coalitions Reject Resignation of President

ERBIL - Iraqi Himka Party, led by Ammar al-Hakim, and the alliance of Sairoon, led by powerful Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, have rejected the resignation of President Barham Salih.

Salih said on Thursday that he was ready to resign rather to nominate a candidate for the country's premiership who has already been rejected by the protesters.

Speaking to reporters, Khalid Jashami, a member of Hikma Party, urged the Iraqi president to stay in power and "protect the Iraqi Constitution," hailing his role in preventing bloodshed in the country, as protests have been ongoing for the past three months.

Meanwhile, Sairoon has also made a similar call regarding Salih's warning of resignation.

The Iraqi president made it clear on Thursday that he would not nominate Asad al-Idani, suggested by al-Bina coalition, and that he was ready to resign if he had to.

Iraq has been rocked by anti-government protests since early October. Former PM Adil Abdul Mahdi resigned in hopes of addressing the evolving situation.
