ISIS doomed in Mosul as Iraqi Army liberates several neighborhoods – Map update

Battle-of-Mosul-696x579.png

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (11:10 P.M.) – The Iraqi Armed Forces are weeks from absolute victory in Iraq’s second largest city following several important gains inside Mosul on Wednesday.

With the Iraqi Federal Police, and Rapid Response Division holding ISIS in check in central Mosul, the Counter Terrorism Units and 9th Division were able to impose full control over the ‘2nd Al-Haramat’ and Al-Ma’amel districts in western Mosul by noon.

Later in the day, the Iraqi High Command announced that the 9th Division had finished its mission in Mosul. With its heavy tanks unsuitable for urban warfare and narrow streets, this seasoned division will likely join forces with the 15th Division in the coming battle for Tal Afar, an encircled ISIS bastion further west in the Nineveh governorate.

Nevertheless, government forces proceeded to storm the Al-Aslah Al-Zraae and ’17th Tammuz’ suburbs. After breaking through the jihadist defensive line in the residential area, Iraqi troops closed in on the Aqtasadeen neighborhood. Heavy clashes continued in the evening hours amid reports of new suicide bombings.

With Iraqi forces slowly chipping away at the ISIS-held pocket, over 30 jihadist militants were killed by airstrikes alone on Wednesday. However, Amaq Agency claimed dozens of civilians had been killed by the joint US and Iraqi bombardment too.

With elite infantry units sweeping through the northwestern sector, one of the highest ranking ISIS commanders left in Mosul was killed on Wednesday. The commander was identified as Abu Ayoud Al-Sham and was a Syrian citizen.

With the departure of the 9th Division, mopping up operations will be left exclusively to the Rapid Response Division, Iraqi Federal Police and Counter Terrorism Units. Thousands of civilians are caught in the crossfire on a daily basis, severely hampering Iraqi advances.

Baghdad and Washington have repeatedly accused ISIS of using civilians and some 5,000 prisoners as human shields to deter airstrikes and shelling on their areas, most specifically around the densely populated Old City neighborhood and the ISIS controlled Al-Nouri Mosque where Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi declared the caliphate in 2014.

Elsewhere in Nineveh province, the 15th Division and Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) foiled a big ISIS breakout attempt on the western outskirts of Tal Afar, killing 15 ISIS militants, wounding 25 and capturing 3 technicals in the process.

As the exclusive Al-Masdar News map above reveals, no more than 5% of Mosul city remains under Islamic State control.

ISIS collapses as military kills commander in west Mosul

May 11 2017 06:07 PM
ISIS collapses
ISIS collapses

ISIS terrorist group has suffered major losses in its last Iraqi stronghold of Mosul in recent days as pro-government forces have rapidly advanced against extremists, NewsWeek reported on Thursday.

Facing regular suicide vehicle bombings and sniper fire from ISIS' final pockets of control over Iraq's second largest city, Iraqi troops and their allies, which include Kurdish forces, Iran-backed Shiite  IMIS militias  and a US-led coalition, have beat the ultraconservative Sunni Muslim group back to a stretch of western Mosul along the Euphrates river.

In the past 24 hours alone, Iraqi forces made lightning gains on a recently opened northwestern front, taking multiple districts such as Al-Islah Al-Zarai and killing local ISIS military commander Abu Ayoub al-Shami, according to local media.

With ISIS' casualties mounting and escape routes to the militants' territory in neighboring Syria narrowing, the group that controlled nearly half of Iraq in 2014 has put up fierce resistance in defending the collapsing lines of the less than seven percent that remains. Despite the terrorists' efforts, US and Iraqi officials have predicted an early victory.

ISIS' recent losses come after Iraqi troops and local militias retook major cities across the nation in recent years, leaving only Mosul, pockets near the central city of Kirkuk and strips along the border with Syria under ISIS control.

The ongoing Mosul offensive, which was announced in October by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, retook the eastern half of Mosul earlier this year and has secured over 340 square miles of the west, Pentagon spokesperson Navy Captain Jeff Davis said Friday.

Air Force Colonel John Dorrian, spokesperson for the US' anti-ISIS Operation Inherent Resolve, said Wednesday that Iraqi security forces had retaken more than 18 additional square miles in the past week.

Security forces inflict losses on ISIS

Joint Iraqi forces made a new progress in its fight against ISIS during operations of recapturing the right bank of Mosul city on Thursday, sources told The Baghdad Post

Sections of the 16th Division have crossed Tigris River and recaptured Mesherfa and Hawi al-Kanisa neighborhoods in western bank of Mosul, after inflicting heavy losses on ISIS, they added.

The sources stated that these forces had destroyed ISIS tunnels and killed 4 suicide bombers.

They added that the forces had destroyed the terrorist group's ammunition and weapons depots.

Elsewhere in Mosul, residents of Mesherfa neighborhood, besieged 7 months ago by ISIS terrorists, exited the area through passages provided by the security forces.

Security forces, backed by International coalition air raids and logistic support of the US army, have retaken eastern Mosul and half of its western part after 6 months of battles. These forces are focusing now on controlling the Old City.

It is said that there is a few number of ISIS terrorists left in the second largest city of Iraq. It is expected that they will desperately defend the last pocket of the city that has been once their main stronghold in Iraq.

Civilians in Mosul's Old City face certain death

May 11 2017 07:20 PM
Old cit of Mosul
Old cit of Mosul

As many as 450,000 civilians are trapped in Mosul's Old City, caught up in house-to-house fighting between ISIS terrorists and Iraqi government forces and cut off from aid, Reuters cited the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Wednesday.

The Iraqi army says it is in the final stages of its campaign to oust the ISIS terrorists from their last major stronghold in Iraq, seven months after the US-backed operation to recapture the city began.

Patrick Hamilton, ICRC deputy director for the Middle East, said civilians were facing "very stark choices" as food and water run out.

"This population is not only exposed to the immediate dangers of the conflict itself and being either targeted or hit as collateral damage, but is also facing the effects of just no longer really having much access to the basic essentials that they need to live," Hamilton said after a trip to Iraq.

Thousands have fled every day since the US-backed forces opened up a new front last week in the northwestern corner of the city, which includes the historic Old City center, where the militants are besieged.

The ICRC said Iraqi authorities were already overwhelmed by the exodus of 600,000 people from the city, Iraq's second largest, since October. Another 100,000 to 200,000 could flee the final battle for the Old City, it said, citing UN figures.

The agency has deployed mobile surgical teams close to the frontline but has not been able to access the Old City.

"People don't have enough to eat, don't have water," Hamilton said. "Babies, elderly and so on of course they are very vulnerable and may already be dying."

Hamilton said the battle for Mosul had been a "very long, attritional fight". The final phase was expected to be the most difficult in a densely populated ancient city with narrow alleyways, he said.

An updated version of Mosul map showing the latest developments in the battle to recapture ISIS-held areas in Nineveh Governorate, particularly in Mosul's right bank, has been obtained by The Baghdad Post on Thursday.

On the map, the spots marked in green represent the previously ISIS-held areas that have been liberated.

As the map shows, the white spots represent the parts of the war-torn city where ISIS is still controlling.

In Mosul, there are areas still witnessing clashes between the Iraqi forces, backed by international coalition, and ISIS terrorists. They are marked in orange on the map.

The map was released by Nineveh Media Center on May 10th.

In a statement, the Center said it renews its commitment to neutrality when covering stories of the battles and the other issues. Our aim is nothing but the truth, the statement concluded.

Publishing the maps relating to the progress of the Iraqi forces in Mosul is done after contacts with multiple military sources and local officials, it added.

Rapid Intervention forces supported by Federal Police armored brigade are currently pushing deep in al-Eqtsadeyyein neighborhood in western Mosul, Federal Police Commander Gen. Raed Shakir Jawdat said on Thursday.

Sections of the 16th Division have crossed Tigris River and recaptured Mesherfa and Hawi al-Kanisa neighborhoods in western bank of Mosul, after inflicting heavy losses on ISIS, a security source said on Thursday.

Iraqi Forces launched a major offensive on 19th of February to retake the western part of Mosul after declaring total control of the eastern part of the city on 24th of January as part of the military operations to liberate the city that started on 17th of October 2016.

Iran Established Several Bases in Mosul: Arab Sheikh

He says they support Kurdistan's appeal for statehood even if Baghdad requires them to do the opposite

Iran Established Several Bases in Mosul: Arab Sheikh

ERBIL—Iran has opened several bases in central Mosul in order to stage turmoil and divide the components of the city, said Sheikh Mahmud al-Tani, the chieftain for Tay Tribe.

During an interview with BasNews on Wednesday, Tani also deliberated on the Shi'ite forces, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces and its appeal for independence.

Not only the Shi'ite Popular Mobilization Forces (commonly referred to as Hashd al-Shaabi) but also Iran has opened several bases in Mosul, Tani said.

Through these bases , Iran aims at "staging sedition and turmoil among the components of Mosul."

"We oppose these bases and in the coming days will inform Mosul officials about our stance [in this respect]."

The Arab chieftain stated they do not oppose the Shi'ite Hashd forces collectively, but there are some groups in the umbrella force "which are supervised by Iran and get provoked against the Sunni people."

"These parties are a threat against the area and the future of Sunnis, so we reject their presence principally."

Tani said for the protection of their areas against the Islamic State (IS) extremists, they "prefer Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga force to Hashd forces and the rest of the Iraqi security forces."

Asked about their position with regard to Kurdistan Region's struggle for statehood, Tani said "We are indebted to the Kurdistan Region, Peshmerga, and Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani till we die, so, we support announcing a Kurdistan State by all means."

He added to the same extent that a Kurdish state is in the interest of the Kurdish people, it's equally beneficial for the Sunni Arabs of Iraq.

Tay Tribe's support for Kurdistan State is not bound to authorization form the Iraqi government, said Tani, adding that they will not obey Baghdad if it demanded them to oppose Kurdistan independence.

"We reject, overlook and oppose any order by the Iraqi government for us to oppose the Kurdistan Region…. We will not also side with the parties which currently or in the future oppose Kurdistan," the Arab chieftain said.

Commenting on the presence of the PKK forces in some locations of Nineveh province, Tani described the force as "another source of turmoil in our area"

"We deem it inappropriate for them to be here."

In pictures: ISIS keeps harassing Iraqi Army positions with armed drone attacks

ISIS-drone-attack-696x392.jpg

BAGHDAD, IRAQ (12:10 P.M.) – Jihadists of the so-called “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” (ISIS) keep utilizing armed drones against Iraqi government forces.

On Wednesday, one of these drones hit an Iraqi military outpost north of Rutbah town in the western part of Anbar province. For over a month this desert area has seen regular daily raids by ISIS militants. Unable to confront Iraqi Army directly, they rely on hit-and-run tactics conducting blitz attacks.

Armed drones used by terrorists are rather primitive. Basically, an armed drone is a simple commercially available unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with an artillery shell attached to it with a grip-ungrip mechanism.

Meanwhile, multiple reports from Iraq indicate that western Anbar countryside will be the next target for Iraqi Army after Mosul is completely liberated from ISIS. Western part of Anbar has been a jihadist heartland since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi government forces advanced towards a new district in western Mosul on Thursday, continuing a push towards the IS-held Old City from the northwest.

Federal Police chief, Shaker Jawdat said in statements that the Interior Ministry’s Rapid Response forces, backed by Federal Police armoured vehicles, made an incursion Thursday at al-Ektesadiyn district, an area to which Islamic State fled over the past few days as Iraqi forces advanced, according to field commanders.

The troops are moving across the district’s northern section, while dozens of armoured vehicles and hundreds of snipers trained for night-time battles were deployed at those areas, putting the militants under siege, Jawdat said.

Whatsapp

The development comes as Iraqi forces opened last week a new front targeting the strategic, IS-held Old City from the northwestern direction, having struggled for weeks to invade the densely populated and narrowly structured area from its southern entrances.

Iraqi commanders have reported dozens of deaths among Islamic State militants and the recapture of large parts of districts on the targets list.

On Wednesday, the Iraqi command said army forces had killed more than 1300 militants since the launch of operations for western Mosul in February. Iraqi commanders say they control at least 70 percent of western Mosul.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A map released by the Iraqi military media on Thursday suggested that government troops became in control over 90 percent of western Mosul.

The map, posted by the Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell, shows that only 10 percent remain under Islamic State militants’ control as the forces opened a new front of operations last week targeting the IS-held Old City from the northwestern direction. Military officials, who said earlier this month they control 70 percent of the region, have yet to confirm the map’s accuracy.

A map by the defense ministry media shows 90 percent of western Mosul regions under government troops control

Also on Thursday, Ali al-Jaff, a lieutenant at the army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service, was quoted by Shafaaq news website saying his forces cleared six IS snipers positions in al-Islah al-Zeraee district.

Head of the CTS special operations, Maan al-Saadi, also said in statements that he predicts al-Islah al-Zeraee district to be fully recaptured on Thursday. He said his forces invaded the district on Wednesday and took over 30 percent of it, adding that it overlooks other major districts such as 17 Tamuz, al-Arabi and al-Refaie.

Earlier on Thursday, Federal Police chief, Shaker Jawdat, said in statements that the Interior Ministry’s Rapid Response forces, backed by Federal Police armored vehicles, made an incursion Thursday at al-Ektesadiyn district, an area to which Islamic State fled over the past few days as Iraqi forces advanced, according to field commanders.
