75% of Yezidi people freed from Islamic State: official

Seventy-five percent of civilians belonging to the Iraqi Yezidi ethno-religious minority have been released from Islamic State captivity, according to an official in Dohuk province.

Hussein Koro, the head of a government office for Yezidi affairs, said in a press statement on Thursday that more than 150 Yezidi women and children have been liberated from IS since battles were launched by the Iraqi government to retake the city of Mosul from the extremist group.

Koro added that IS transferred some of the kidnapped to its stronghold Syrian city of Raqqa, where there are 2600 Yezidis in militants’ captivity.

Thousands of Yazidi Kurds fled Sanjar to nearby mountain areas following its fall to Islamic State militants in August 2014. The extremist group massacred, enslaved and tortured thousands of that sect.

Data in 2015 from the office on Yazidi kidnapping victims showed that 2640 Yazidis were released from captivity by Islamic State militants over the past two years, but there are 3770 others still in the extremist group’s hold.

The Kurdish-speaking minority came to the spotlight when Islamic State militants, taking over large parts of Iraq, victimized its members, committing massacres and subjecting them to forced conversions, sexual slavery and other reported atrocities.

127 Daesh militants killed in Mosul Thursday - military commander

As many as 127 elements of Daesh terrorist group were killed on Thursday as part of the campaign launched to liberate Mosul, said campaign commander Lieutenant General Abdul Ameer Rasheed Yarallah.

Also, he said, eight booby-trapped cars belonging to Daesh were detonated in the battles launched by Iraqi forces with the help of Iraqi air force and the US-led coalition troops.

Twenty-two airstrikes were conducted on Thursday, including six by the coalition forces, he noted.

The battle of Mosul is the biggest ground operation in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion. A victory by the 100,000-strong US-backed pro-government forces would probably spell the end for Daesh self-styled caliphate that has ruled over millions of people in Iraq and Syria since 2014.

The Iraqi troops are expected to end up military operations in a few hours after purging the eastern bank of Tigris River from Daesh terrorists, Federal Police Chief Raed Shaker Jawdat said.

Alsumaria News / Nineveh , a security source in Nineveh province, on Thursday, that the nine senior leaders in the organization , " Daesh " had fled with their families from the right coast in Mosultowards the Syrian territory and possession of millions of dollars.  The source said in an interview with Alsumaria's News, said that "nine senior leaders, including the so - called head of the Shura Council of the Mujahideen in the state of Nineveh named Abu Anas al - Qahtani, who fled with his family from the right coast in Mosul towards the Syrian territories."  The source , who asked not to be named, said : "fleeing leaders carry with them large sums of money worth millions of dollars."  He was a member of the Nineveh provincial council Hossam El Din Al Abbar, announced on Thursday (January 12, 2017), that the joint forces approached from the left coast complete liberalization altogether, asserting that a few days separated from it.

Dozens of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants have been killed in an airstrike carried out by Iraqi airmen on Yarmajah district in eastern Mosul, a military source said on Thursday.

The aerial bombardment left 90 terrorists dead and two armored vehicles with heavy machine guns destroyed, the source added.

Violence killed over 16,000 Iraqi civilians in 2016: Research group

A research group says violence left 16,361 civilians dead last year in Iraq, which has been hit by a campaign of death and destruction perpetrated by Takfiri Daesh terrorists over the past few years.

In a report released on Thursday, the London-based Iraqi Body Count said that an average of more than 1,300 civilians lost their lives due to violence in the Arab country every month.

It further said that the worst affected areas were the northern province of Nineveh and the capital city of Baghdad, with 7,431 and 3,714 Iraqi civilians killed, respectively.

The most deadly bomb attack took place at a very crowded market in Baghdad’s Karrada neighborhood on July 3, 2016. Daesh claimed responsibility for the incident, which killed 324 people, including women and children.

The second fatal bomb blast also struck at a petrol station and restaurant in the Shomali village in the suburbs of the city of al-Hilla on November 24, 2016. It targeted buses carrying Shia pilgrims returning from Arba’een mourning rituals in the holy city of Karbala. The explosion, which was claimed by Daesh, killed up to 100 civilians, among them nationals from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Over the past months, Iraq has been rocked by a wave of terrorist bomb attacks.

The Daesh militants have recently increased their acts of violence across the Arab country in revenge for the blows they have been suffering at the hands of Iraqi forces, particularly in the northern city of Mosul.

Daesh began its campaign of terror in northern and western Iraq in 2014. 

Iraqi army soldiers and allied fighters are leading military operations to win back militant-held regions.
