According to the source, who spoke to Sputnik on condition of anonymity, ten days ago, the IS militants traveling on 40 SUVs with the support of a few tanks made an attempt to cross the border from Syria into Iraq and enter Tel Afar, located on the road to Mosul. The source explained that this is seen as an attempt to either withdraw the remaining militants from Mosul or to evacuate the leader of the extremist group, Abu Bakir al-Baghdadi. The Iraqi forces believe that Baghdadi is currently positioned in western Mosul and there is speculation that he might be wounded as a result of an airstrike conducted by the IS-led coalition forces in March.
