Iraqi forces raid Iran-backed militia base, detain commanders- govt sources

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi security forces raided a headquarters belonging to a powerful Iran-backed militia in southern Baghdad late on Thursday, seized rockets and detained three commanders of the group, two Iraqi government officials said.

The officials said the militia group targeted was the Iran-backed Kataib Hezbollah, which U.S. officials have accused of firing rockets at bases hosting U.S. troops and other facilities in Iraq.

It was the most brazen raid in years by Iraqi security forces against a powerful paramilitary group backed by Tehran, whose proxy militias have developed military, political and economic dominance in Iraq.

Iraq’s new prime minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, has indicated he will be tough on militia groups which target U.S. installations. The raid, which took place after midnight, is the first sign Kadhimi will follow through on his tough talk.

It took place after a number of rocket attacks near the U.S. embassy in Baghdad and other U.S. military sites in the country in recent weeks.

There was no immediate comment from Iraqi militia groups or from Iran. Both Tehran and Washington supported Kadhimi in becoming prime minister in May.

One of the government officials told Reuters one of the three commanders detained in the raid was an Iranian. Iraqi special forces from the Counter Terrorism Service carried out the raid, he said.

The official said the three detained commanders were handed over to the U.S. military. A spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq denied this and said the U.S. military and coalition had no involvement in the raid, however.

The Iraqi official said at least 20 other fighters were detained during the raid.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran especially on Iraqi soil have been high for at least a year.

It nearly spilled into regional conflict in January after the United States killed Iran’s military mastermind Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi paramilitary chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a drone strike at Baghdad

Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Forces Raid Kataib Hezbollah HQ, Seize Rocket Launchers

Iraqi security forces also confiscated multiple rocket launchers from the Kataib Hezbollah fighters during the Thursday night raid, as reported by AFP, citing three officials.

The outlet noted that this was the first raid against individuals who have been accused of carrying out anti-US rocket attacks.

"Based on intelligence information, a CTS unit raided a base used by Brigade 45, seizing three rocket launchers and arresting 13 fighters," an unnamed official said, according to AFP.

Earlier this month, a number of Katyusha rockets assaulted Baghdad, and Iraq’s Joint Operations Command (JOC) seized a flatbed truck that had been repurposed into a Katyusha rocket launcher

However, the JOC did not link the seized truck to any particular group at the time.

Washington has accused Kataib Hezbollah of carrying out the late December 2019 rocket attack on the K1 military base outside of Kirkuk in northern Iraq. As many as 30 rockets were launched into the military facility, and one US civilian contractor died as a result of the attack.

US officials have also asserted that Kataib Hezbollah was behind the March 11 Katyusha rocket strike on Camp Taji, which houses forces of the US-led coalition. Two American troops and a British soldier died from the 18-rocket barrage.

This is great news folks.  The Iraq Government is decoupling from Iran and sending a message to Iran.  Respect our Sovereign Borders.

I can’t help but think if this leads to war, watch your oil prices.

Mmmm this could be very interesting and it might be our Red Flag excuse to change the economic system.

I know over dramatic 😂

This means the, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi is in deep, with the United States. He has chosen sides. He has "crossed the Rubicon". To cross the Rubicon is a metaphor which means to take an irrevocable step that commits one, to a specific course. He has no choice now. From now on, he is with America. His choices were America, or Iran, in who would help build his country. He chose wisely, he chose America. There is no going back for Al-Kadhimi now, no appeasing Iran. He must get rid of Iranian influence in Iraq completely, he must get rid of the Iranian militias and do many things more, to side with America. He has no choice now. The Iranians will kill him if they get a chance. He's a brave man, to be respected. :goodnews:He chose wisely because Iran is a nation in decline. America will continue to be the Big Dog in the region, providing regional stability. Soon it will be America's turn to return the favor, let international investment into Iraq, let them have a currency that will be worth something. This plan has been in the works for a long time, likely. The Iranian General Qasem Soleimani was taken out a few months ago. The Iraq Government cooperated with America, likely told him where he was, when he was there. This means Iraq is proving to be an ally. Good news :bravo:

For the first time ... a raid on the headquarters of the Hezbollah Brigades, Iraq, to stop the launch of Katyusha rockets

Hezbollah Brigades Iraq

In what was described as the first security move, against the Iranian terrorist militias, on the ground after a series of terrorist Katyusha attacks on Baghdad International Airport, the Taji camp and the Green Zone, an anti-terrorist force detained 13 elements of a pro-Iranian faction, against the background of missile attacks against American interests In Iraq and the attack on Iraqi sovereign places, in a precedent since those attacks began 8 months ago. A government source and two other security officials said, according to Sky News Arabia coverage, that the people arrested in the Dora area, south of Baghdad, had seized and had missiles intended for launch inside a missile manufacturing workshop. They indicated that they belonged to the terrorist Hezbollah Brigades militia, which Washington has repeatedly accused of targeting its soldiers and diplomats.

One of the three leaders detained in the raid is Iranian, a government official said, and said Iraqi special forces from the Counter-Terrorism Service carried out the raid. The official added that the three arrested leaders were handed over to the US military.

Iraqi sources said that the group that had arrested 6 missiles was aimed at the Green Zone, and missile launchers were also found. For its part, the pro-Iranian militia called on its supporters to fight the Iraqi forces.

Since October 2019, more than 33 missiles have targeted Iraqi facilities hosting diplomats or foreign soldiers, including 6 attacks in the past two weeks alone. To demonstrate the seriousness of the situation, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazimi held a meeting last week of the National Security Council to discuss the missile issue, and pledged to pursue those responsible.

Last March, US Central Command chief Gen. Kenneth McKinsey announced that the Hezbollah BrigadesIraq is behind the attack on the Taji base, north of Baghdad.

"We have information confirming that the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades carried out missile attacks on the Taji camp, which killed three coalition members and wounded fourteen others," said McKinsey in a tweet on Twitter. He explained that the battalions had launched 12 missile attacks on coalition forces over the past six months. the then sees experts, a step that hunt Hezbollah Brigades Iraq may deter the rest of the Iranian militias.

News that Tehran's massive explosion exploded a major nuclear facility in the Parchin military area

Sources: The Parchin Military District is a secret nuclear research zone and is about 30 miles away from Tehran.

Informed Iranian sources revealed to the "Baghdad Post" during the first minutes of a massive explosion east of the Iranian capital, Tehran, that the explosion mostly affected an "Iranian nuclear facility", The place where the explosion took place is"Parchin" nuclear military area, whichone ofsecret nuclear sites operated by Iran to manufacture nuclear weapons.
Iranian media have confirmed a massive explosion east of the capital, Tehran, which is believed to be the result of an explosion inside a military base. The Iranian "Mehr" agency reported that the residents of Bomhan and Bardis, east of Tehran, heard the explosion, without providing additional information.
Iranian activists said that the terrible "mysterious" explosion took place in Sarkhath Hisar area, near the Parchin region, which includes the Parchin military site and defense industries factories.
In the same context, Iranian state television announced that the Iranian authorities are investigating a thunderous light and light in eastern Tehran.

And previous reports, the Iranian resistance revealed many of the secrets of this site, and said that Iran is developing its nuclear arsenal, in secret facilities with the help of scientists from North Korea. In a previous report, the National Council of Iranian Resistance said, in a 52-page report, entitled "The Nuclear Nucleus: A Military Site Not Subject to Inspection", that there are 4 large sites inside which are "with a great degree of certainty" the nuclear developments taking place in Iran, noting that they have discovered this from The way to hack and gather intelligence about the mentioned research centers. The council pointed out that one of those centers is believed to be used by the Iranian regime to manufacture nuclear weapons at Parchin military base, 30 miles southeast of Tehran, pointing out that the base also hosts the headquarters of the Iranian Army's Research Academy.

In its report published three years ago, the Council noted its belief that Complex No. 6 at the Parchin base, which covers an area of 500 acres and is surrounded by an invisible fence and is officially known as the Chemical Industry Complex, is essentially the main place where research on nuclear weapons is conducted.

Iran's opening of a large investigation into the bombing and its intensity raised wide questions about the Parchin military site. Is it really an explosion at a natural gas station, as Iran claims? Or is it the bombing of the secret nuclear site, and it came with this huge and terrible picture, according to what was reported. And photos and videos published about?
