The US intelligence agencies are receiving information that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is in grave danger after undergoing surgery, CNN reported on Monday.

The outlet cited an unnamed US official with direct knowledge of the matter.

Another US official said there were concerns over Kim’s health, but it was hard to assess the severity of the situation.

A South Korean government official told the country’s Yonhap news agency that Kim was not seriously ill, contradicting the report. 

Earlier Monday, a South Korean media report said that the 36-year-old despot was being treated following a cardiovascular procedure earlier this month.

The reclusive leader missed the celebration of his grandfather’s birthday, the nation’s founder, Kim Il Sung, on April 15, sparking speculations about his health.

Kim underwent the surgery April 12 at a hospital in the Mount Kumgang resort county of Hyangsan and was recovering at a villa there, reported Daily NK, a website run mostly by North Korean defectors, citing unidentified sources inside the hermit kingdom.

The diminutive dictator’s health has deteriorated in recent months due to heavy smoking, obesity and overwork, the report said.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean affairs, said it couldn’t confirm the reports.

The National Security Council and Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment to CNN. The CIA and the State Department didn’t immediately comment.

US official revealed that intelligence obtained by the United States stated that the health of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was "in serious condition", after undergoing a cardiovascular operation early this month.

South Korea's "Daily NK" newspaper, which is run by North Korean defectors, quoted sources inside North Korea that Kim is recovering in a villa in Mount Kumgang Resort District in Huangsan on the east coast after the operation took place on April 12 in a hospital in this region.

North Korea celebrated the anniversary of Kim's father and grandfather's birthday, on April 15, but Kim was not present.

The newspaper report said Kim's health had deteriorated in recent months due to excessive smoking, obesity and fatigue.

One of the sources confirmed to the newspaper that Kim had been suffering from cardiovascular problems since last August, but his health conditions deteriorated after his repeated visits to the holy mountain "Baektu".

The report indicated that Kim had left the hospital after he chaired the meeting of the ruling Labor Party political office on April 11, when he was last seen publicly.

It is reported that during the past days, Pyongyang launched several short-range missiles last week, Seoul officials said it is part of the celebration of the founder's birthday, and Kim usually watches such military events, but this time he did not.

Conflicting reports indicate Kim Jong-Un possibly in problematic condition after surgery

This is a breaking news story and of course a difficult one, given the exceptional dearth of reliable information from North Korea.  Multiple news sites in Washington confirm they are receiving reports on it from U.S. officials, however.  There appears to be something to it; the question is exactly what.

CNN reported a short time ago that Kim Jong Un was said by an unnamed U.S. official to be “in grave danger after surgery.”  The CNN report indicated that this came from U.S. intelligence.

CNN says another U.S. official tells them “the concerns about Kim’s health are credible but the severity is hard to assess.”

Kim Jong-Un reportedly had heart surgery on 12 April and has been in recovery in the 8 days since.  He missed appearing at the official commemoration of his grandfathers’s (Kim Il-Sung) birthday on 15 April.

  Fox News has much the same information, but doesn’t attribute it to U.S. intelligence monitoring.  Says Fox: “Sources told Fox News that the White House is aware of the reports of Kim’s health, but there is no confirmation.”

 

All kinds of speculation is rampant in the media, both among the cable news talking heads and on social media.  OAN says officials have told them a Chinese doctor was called in to attend Kim Jong-Un, and ended up infecting him with COVID-19.

That’s possible, although the likelihood of U.S. intelligence making such a disclosure with confidence is low.  I suggest not running with it.  It’s just something to be aware of.  Apparently someone wants to have the “disclosure” out there, at any rate, so it’s not worthless as a data point.

 

Obviously the implications of this would be significant if Kim Jong-Un’s health were at such grave risk that he might not (or did not) survive.  South Korea has been downplaying the matter, declining to add to the speculation frenzy.  Rather than rewrite it at unnecessary length, I’ll just post my tweet on that point.

 

 

Beyond that, there is limited utility in spinning out scenarios from a position of ignorance.  We don’t really know how bad it is, although if we’re hearing about it at all, it’s legitimate to assume Kim’s life is, in fact, at stake.  It’s CNN giving the worst report of Kim’s health (“grave danger’), which is a red flag for me.  CNN is one of several outlets that make themselves the path of least resistance for “leaks” targeting the Trump administration’s foreign policy.  Perhaps U.S. intelligence thinks it’s as bad as CNN says.  Perhaps not.

That said, if it is that bad, and Kim may not survive, it’s not actually obvious what would happen next.  Most mainstream media have come out speculating about Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong.   Maybe.  It may depend on who from outside North Korea can manage the fanciest footwork.  Don’t discount the possibility that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to influence the successor regime in Pyongyang and set history on a new course.  President Trump has already set the key condition for that: decoupling North Korean relations in general from the exclusive brokerage of Beijing.

Nothing like that would be done in the open, at least not initially.  But the U.S. has the friends for it in the neighborhood.  There’s never a time so unpropitious for correcting the longstanding situation on the Korean peninsula that it shouldn’t be tried.
 

South Korea’s Moon Jae-In has a very solid governing mandate after a massive victory for the Democrats in last week’s election; I don’t have enough of a sense of him to predict whether he’s up to the job of grabbing the reins and going for reunification.  Any such move has to be spearheaded by Seoul.  They’ll keep their cards close to the vest, and they won’t want to aggressively alienate China, even if they have the courage, with U.S. backing, to act independently.

At any rate, it’s early days yet.  We’ll see where this goes.

{International: Al Furat News} The Yonhap News Agency quoted a South Korean government official as saying on Tuesday that the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is not very ill, opposing a report published by the American CNN, which stated that Kim is “in great danger”. After he underwent surgery.

A media report in South Korea also stated that the North Korean leader is receiving treatment after undergoing a cardiovascular procedure early this month, amid speculation about Kim's health after his absence from an important annual event.
The Daily NK website, which is run mostly by North Korean defectors, quoted sources inside North Korea as saying that Kim was recovering in a villa in Huangsan County on the country's eastern coast after he underwent medical treatment in a hospital there on April 12.
South Korea's Ministry of Unity declined to comment on the report.
The website report said Kim's health had deteriorated in the past few months due to heavy smoking, obesity and overwork.
"What I understood is that he has been suffering (from cardiovascular problems) since August, but the matter is exacerbated after his repeated visits to Mount Paektu," the report quoted a source as saying.
He added that Kim went to the hospital after he chaired a meeting of the ruling Labor Party political office on April 11, and this was the last time the North Korean leader was seen in public.
CNN had quoted an official that Kim Jong Un had recently missed his grandfather's birthday celebration on April 15, which sparked speculation about his safety, and was seen four days earlier at a government meeting.
She added that the North Korean leader is suffering from a serious health condition after undergoing surgery.

That is for sure. I came home last night and a friend was over try to find the VA governor speech and they had CNN on. I told them that is the last channel you are going to get any real factual news from and you need to change it. Just to give you an idea some guy was asking Albright about the US calling out China and she stated it was a bad idea. Does that tell you anything.
