KRG PM Barzani, US VP Pence discuss security in Iraq’s disputed areas
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani (left) had a phone call with US Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday.
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani discussed the threat of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq, especially in the disputed areas, in a phone conversation with US Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday, the White House stated.

Barzani gave Pence “an update on the security situation in Iraq’s disputed territories and underscored the importance of continued US support to stabilize these areas,” read the White House statement

Iraq declared ISIS defeated in December 2017, but the group remains a serious security threat, especially in disputed areas where there are security gaps between Iraqi and Kurdish forces.

Rudaw has reported on militants freely moving around in the Makhmour area.

On Wednesday, the global coalition against ISIS supported an Iraqi offensive against ISIS, launching an airstrike against militants in Wadi Ashai, Kirkuk province, the coalition announced on Thursday.

"Although the territory once held by the so-called caliphate is fully liberated, Daesh fighters still exhibit their intention to exert influence and stage a comeback," said Maj. Gen. Chad Franks, deputy commander-operations and intelligence for the coalition, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Iraq’s Joint Operations Command reported killing six ISIS members in a raid in Kirkuk province on Thursday.

Barzani and Pence also discussed “opportunities to deepen the US partnership with Kurdistan and work more closely to counter malign actors that seek to destabilize Iraq and undermine its sovereignty,” the White House stated in a veiled reference to Iran.

Washington is trying to get Baghdad and Erbil to lessen their ties with neighbour Iran, which the administration of US President Donald Trump administration has labelled the world’s worst “state sponsor of terror.”

The US has labelled Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terror organization, though Iraq may benefit from a watering down of sanctions announced by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday.

America’s deputy special envoy to the coalition, Ambassador William Roebuck, visited Barzani in Erbil on Thursday, the KRG stated

Nechirvan Barzani, head of northern Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), has called for stepped-up cooperation with the central government in Baghdad, especially in the counter-terrorism field, Anadolu Agency reported.

Barzani made the remarks on Thursday evening at a meeting with members of a U.S. congressional delegation.

Held in Erbil, the KRG’s administrative capital, the meeting was also attended by KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani and Steven Fagin, the U.S. consul-general in Erbil.

According to a KRG statement, the meeting tackled political and security-related developments in northern Iraq’s Kurdish region; the ongoing training of the KRG’s peshmerga forces by a U.S.-led military coalition; and the need for enhanced security cooperation with Baghdad.

“The situation in Syria and relations with neighboring countries were also discussed,” the statement read.

Members of the U.S. delegation, for their part, commended the KRG for its contributions to the fight against the ISIS terrorist group and for providing shelter to large numbers of displaced persons.

In late 2017, Baghdad declared that ISIS's military presence in Iraq had been all but destroyed following a three-year war between the Iraqi army and the terrorist group.

The Iraqi army, however, continues to wage frequent operations against ISIS “sleeper cells” which allegedly remain active in certain parts of the country.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – On Sunday, a senior Iraqi delegation is due to arrive in Erbil and meet with ministers and officials from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to discuss relations between the two governments.

Titled “Joint-meeting between the federal delegation for economic affairs and the council of ministers of the Kurdistan Regional Government – Iraq,” the two sides are slated to discuss lingering disputes between Erbil and Baghdad and ways to address them.

The delegates are meeting “to further coordination and understanding to resolve the [remaining] issues” between the central and regional governments, second deputy parliament speaker, Bashir Haddad, told Kurdistan 24 late Saturday.

On Thursday, Iraqi oil minister Thamer Ghadhban said that the chief focus of the meeting would be disputes over oil exports and other budget items.

Ties between the two governments continue to improve following a near-complete breakdown in the aftermath of the Kurdish bid for independence in 2017 that culminated with the previous federal administration’s attack on Peshmerga-protected disputed territories, obliging the latter forces’ retreat from the areas they had spared from the Islamic State.

Iraq’s Parliamentary Speaker, Mohammed al-Halbousi, arrived in the Kurdistan Region last Monday and met with senior leaders as well as KRG officials, including the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani.

Barzani “assessed the positive atmosphere prevailing between the [Kurdistan Region] and Baghdad,” noting that strong ties between the KRG and Iraqfavor stability and prosperity throughout Iraq,” a statement from the KDP leader’s office read
