Iraqi flag flies over Mosul government buildings after bloody day of fighting (Video in link)

By Rudaw 1 hour ago

MOSUL, Iraq – In one of the most grueling days of fighting ISIS in Mosul, Iraqi Security Forces retook a key site – a provincial governmental complex that ISIS was using as a headquarters.

A series of videos from Rudaw’s reporters on the ground show the fierce battles, house-to-house clashes, exchanges of fire between Iraqi and ISIS snipers, and blood shed in order to once again fly Iraq’s flag over Mosul’s provincial government buildings.

Iraqi army says it has put ISIS drones out of service  (Video in link)

By Rudaw 10 hours ago

MOSUL, Iraq–A commander of the Iraq’s Counter Terrorism Service (ICTS) claims that they have been able to control the ISIS drone system in the western half of Mosul through the use of parasite machines.

ISIS militants have armed commercial drones with hand grenades and used them against advancing Iraqi troops since the second phase of the Mosul offensive that began in late December to retake the city from the radical group.

In early January Rudaw reported a case of ISIS drones harassing Iraqi forces in eastern Mosul, dropping hand grenades and other explosives as they made their way into the group’s territories which succeeded in slowing down their advance.

“That  issue has been resolved completely,” Lieutenant-General Abdul Ghani al-Assadi, an ICTS commander told Rudaw TV on Tuesday as he was asked about the challenge of facing the ISIS drones in the sky of Mosul.

“They [ISIS] used it on the first day against the Counter Terrorism Service which recorded 72 sorties from them. On the second day, we recorded 52 sorties. Then we used some machines, [interference] parasite machines, it became 8, and five days before now, and until today, not even a single flight.”

Earlier, Major General Najim al-Jabbouri told Rudaw that the US forces brought a special interference machine to the western Mosul to paralyze the ISIS drones.

"The Americans have brought in a very advanced machine to the right bank of Mosul," Jabouri said, "It is like a big vehicle. ISIS can no longer send even one drone into the sky."

Colonel John Dorrian, the spokesperson for the US-led anti-ISIS global coalition, described the anti-drone measures as "jammers."

He told Rudaw on Tuesday that ISIS is not able to stop the advance of the Iraqi forces, but the only capability ISIS has is the use of drones, a practice that is in decline, he said.

"...the Iraqi security forces are moving very rapidly right now. The enemy is not able to stop their advances,” Colonel Dorrian said. “The only thing the enemy has still been effective in doing is using drones, and even this capability has been declining.”

This comes as the ICTS commander said that Iraqi forces have achieved more than 60 percent of the military objectives in the western half of Mosul, as they breached "strong defense lines" of ISIS south of the city.

"The number of places liberated are not important, as is the importance of the places," Assadi said. “The places that have been liberated [in western Mosul] are strong defense lines of ISIS which fell two days ago."

"Our forces were then able to push deep [into western Mosul]; meaning that if you give a percentage of importance, I can say more than 60 percent have been achieved in the liberation of the right bank of Mosul," Assadi said, in reference to the right bank of the Tigris river that bisects the city.

The ICTS spearheaded the offensive on the eastern half of Mosul, which was retaken by Iraqi forces in late January after 100 days of fighting, and in which at least 500 soldiers lost their lives.

Peshmerga, Iraqi Forces Cooperation Destroying IS: US Envoy

ERBIL — The cooperation between Kurdistan Region Peshmerga and the Iraqi forces is destroying the Islamic State (IS), said Brett McGurk, the US Special Presidential Envoy to the coalition battling IS.

McGurk made the remark after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s visit to Erbil and the liberate areas of Mosul.

On Tuesday, Abadi met Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani in Erbil to discuss the latest security and political developments, with the ongoing operations against IS in Mosul on the top of the agenda.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the level of coordination and cooperation between the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces who have both been actively engaged in the Mosul operation.

"They also expressed their condolences to the loved ones and families of those who paid the ultimate price within the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces,” Kurdistan Region Presidency reported.

IS Continues Using Chemical Weapons Against Civilians in Western Mosul

IS Continues Using Chemical Weapons Against Civilians in Western Mosul

LEEDS — Dozens of cases of children being injured by chemical weapons used by the so-called Islamic State (IS) have been registered, a local source in Mosul said on Tuesday.

According to the source in the district of Rashidiya, the IS militants fired four missiles which were stuffed with the poisonous substance. They are believed to have been fired from the western part of the city, which is still held by the IS militants.

The source who spoke to Sputnik on condition of anonymity further explained that the chemical attacks were carried out using latest technology equipment and for the first time ever they were placed inside rocket.

In previous attacks, the Iraqi forces had witnessed the use of toxic gas, but the substance used recently is believed to be stronger and more damaging. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) at least 12 people, including women and children, have recently been treated after facing injuries from the chemical weapons used in western Mosul.

In the beginning of the month patients from Mosul were treated in hospitals in the Kurdistan Region's capital Erbil after being exposed to an unknown agent, leaving severe injuries including skin blisters, the WHO reported.

The Iraqi forces continue advancing against the IS extremists in western Mosul, which has led to the use of toxic substances, as the extremist group is putting all efforts to keep the control of its last main stronghold on the territory of Iraq.

UN Sets up New Camp for IDPs form Western Mosul

UN Sets up New Camp for IDPs form Western Mosul
ISTANBUL — A new camp to accommodate those fleeing western Mosul has been established by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the vicinity of the major city in northern Iraq.

Camp Chamakor was established this week, as other camps in the east are reaching their capacity limits, while those in the south are already full.

The new camp can accommodate 6,600 individuals. About 200 people have already arrived in Chamakor on Monday.

Approximately 195,000 individuals have fled their homes in Mosul amid the ongoing battle between the Iraqi forces and the Islamic State (IS) to take shelter in 21 camps built by UN agencies and the Iraqi as well as the Kurdistan Region governments. Others are taking shelter in private settings or an en route to camps.

Two more camps are being established in the vicinity of Mosul for approximately 39,000 individuals.

According to UNHCR spokesperson Cecile Pouilly, the most of cited reason for fleeing the battle zone is hunger and insecurity.

Since the operation began, Mosul has been witnessing a combination of continuous price hikes for basic food staples and a food shortage. This has reached a point where those that can afford the exorbitant prices cannot find food to buy. Thus, a large number of those fleeing have been eating one meal of flour and water, or bread or tomato paste, a day.  As water pipelines were hit during the operation last year, which left 650,000 people in Mosul without water, getting clean water has been a problem, and thus those that reach the safety of a camp site are dehydrated. Numerous arrive without season-appropriate clothes, with no shoes, while having walked long distances to reach safe zones.

Currently, more than 210,000 have been displaced by the operation in Mosul. Over 50,000 have been added since the operation progressed to the western half of the city on February 19th.

The operation to recapture Mosul from IS militants began on October 17th of last year. The eastern half of the city was announced liberated on January 24th.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:15 A.M.) – On Tuesday, the Iraqi Joint Operations Room officially announced that the Iraqi Army had liberated an additional three neighborhoods in western Mosul, namely; Al-Danadan, Tal Al-Ruman and Dawasa districts.

Effectively, the Iraqi Army’s Rapid Response Units, Counter-Terrorism Units and Federal Police Force have expelled ISIS from central Mosul, leaving the terror group in control of merely the northwestern sector of the city.

Following up on these gains, the Iraqi Armed Forces stormed the neighboring Al-Mualameen and Al-Shuhada suburbs.

Fierce clashes continue at the Al-Mansour district which still holds a few ISIS sniper nests and jihadist sleeper cells, clawing onto roughly 10% of the neighborhood.

Meanwhile, the Iraq Army’s 9th Division and Popular Mobilization Units’ (PMU) Abbas Brigade also liberated the village of Al-Thalja, northwest of Mosul, thereby cementing their grip on ISIS’ recently severed supply line to Tal Afar.

Since beginning the Mosul offensive last October, the Iraqi Air Force has conducted 3,780 sorties against ISIS militants in the Nineveh governorate, averaging 26 airstrikes a day.

At the moment, Iraqi government forces have liberated roughly 85% of Mosul.
