This could be good.... blatant threats from Iran.... could help spur the anti corruption, solidify the need for a U.S. troop presence, build more cohesion in the GOI, and since I don’t think Abadi will back down— may cause a serious cleaning of house of all that is pro-Iranian but probably in a politically correct sort of way.... idk...all imo......... heck, he might declare war on Iran ?! I feel for Abadi tho....he’s caught in the middle, but he needs to make a choice and take a stand....enough playing both sides

US Report: Militant militias raise international fears of sectarian tension and increase Iranian influence

The Euphrates -

US Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced this month an unexpected political alliance with a pro-Iranian militia leader, a US report said Thursday. Hadi al-Amiri, head of the Badr Organization, was to join Ebadi's political parties coalition, which is due to run for elections next May.

Foreign Policy 'Foreign Policy' US said in a report, that this alliance between Abadi and Amiri has been subjected to some criticism from different political spectrum in Iraq. The prime minister, considered by Western governments 'patriotic' over a long period of time, was one of the political enemies of al-Amiri. A few days earlier, the two sides exchanged insults and accusations, with Abbadi harshly criticizing militias allied with al-Amiri (popular crowd factions).

Although the proposed coalition was dissolved a day later, the move raised concerns within the United States and other Western governments, which have always regarded factions of the popular militia, such as Badr, as the fifth Iranian columnist, who plans to destabilize the central government.

"I tend to see this through what I think is Iran's biggest policy in the region," Ryan Crocker, the former US ambassador to Iraq, was quoted as saying. You establish, fund, regulate and train non-international actors who will follow your directions and not those of the parties administering the State. '

As the fighting against a militant organization subsides, the issue of the Popular Popular Militants becomes increasingly important, raising international fears of sectarian tension and increasing Iranian influence in Iraq against the established political and military forces within the state.

The grass-roots militia, formed in the wake of 2014, is composed of a group of armed Shi'ite factions with a religious fatwa from Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani to counter a creeping and expanding organization calling across the country and approaching the walls of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. Most of the powerful factions within these militias have Iranian support, including the Badr Organization, which is led by Amiri.

Not all of these groups are linked to Tehran, the US military said.

"Popular mobilization forces are a comprehensive term," said Maj. Adrian Rankin Galloway, a spokesman for the US Department of Defense. There are Christian, Yezidi and Shiite forces that are not linked to Iran, "he said.

Popular crowd forces provide support to the army

Now that the fighting has slowed down in most parts of the country, many of these militias, especially at the local level, continue to support the Iraqi army. "Police and the army are deployed in most parts of the country," said Sajjad Jayyad, head of the Baghdad Center for Planning and Studies, a research center based in Baghdad. Popular crowd forces are not elite units, but they are contributing to an increase in the number of personnel that are already needed. '

However, the process of finding effective language for integrating these groups into the Iraqi security forces is now emerging as a sensitive issue in Iraq following the fall of a hawkish organization. Some current officials believe that US policy is not yet in line.

"Most of the decisions made in Iraq and Syria over the past years have been aimed at eliminating an oppressive organization," said one foreign policy aide to Congress. "Despite our success in achieving that goal, our choices have not changed now to consider how to eliminate the idea of an effective organization."

Without the US budget for 2018, US military assistance to the Iraqi army - one of the main ways the United States takes power in this process - is also limited. Military assistance can stop the demobilization of some groups. Otherwise, the only way for the United States to exercise influence is to hold 'bilateral talks' through the State Department and the military, "said another congressman.

Some US policy makers have acknowledged the role of the popular mobilization forces over the past years, as well as the political path that the Iraqi prime minister must now take."There is a political balance between Abadi and the desire to reintegrate the popular mobilization forces and to completely disband them," said one US official, who declined to be named.

Elections are the entry point for militias with political ambitions

However, other current and former officials have pointed out that the failure to formally integrate parts of the popular militia into official Iraqi security forces or to fully dismantle some militias could destabilize the government and exacerbate sectarian animosity across the country.

The May 2018 elections provide a potential entry point for some groups with political ambitions. After the call by Sistani in late 2017 for groups to give up their weapons, some of these groups separated their military and political wings. Other popular faction leaders, such as Amiri, are former cabinet ministers seeking to regain their posts.

The seriousness of their political ambitions

However, this shift poses a threat to Iraq's policy structure and paves the way for some potentially dangerous trends, said Felix Willie, a senior Iraqi researcher at Human Rights Watch. "Until this time, when the Popular Forces forces have committed any violations, they are considered stray and corrupt," Foreign Policy quoted her as saying. If they are now political parties, that gives them a very important cover. '

For their part, Iraqi government officials have eased concern over the dangers posed by the popular militia. "There is a law regulating the status of the popular mobilization forces as part of the Iraqi security system," said an Iraqi official, who declined to be identified. Some of these troops are likely to return to normal civilian life or give up their weapons.

Jayyad, from the center of the statement, said the matter, noting that popular opinion strongly supports the idea of demobilization. "The public does not want to see these leaders heading a party or a militia," he said.
