Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraq’s Federal Police chief said Tuesday security forces had retaken 90 percent of central Mosul’s Old City, a most-wanted target in operations against the Islamic State in western Mosul.

Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat said in a statement that his forces recaptured Bab al-Jadid and Bab al-Bid neighborhood. The troops recaptured Nineveh’s railway station and a nearby garage a few hours earlier.

“The Rapid Response forces recaptured 90 percent of the Old City and became 100 meters away from the Old Bridge,” Jawdat stated, referring to one of the five strategic bridges linking western and eastern Mosul above the Tigris River.

Iraqi generals view the Old City, with its narrow alleyways and dense population, as a major target whose recapture could be highly decisive for the outcome of operations in the western region of Mosul.

Iraqi government forces recaptured eastern Mosul from Islamic State on January 24th after three months of battles. Security commanders recently said they became in control of 30 percent of western Mosul since another offensive launched in February to retake the region.

Iraqi troops have made remarkable victories in the west by recapturing major government facilities, a military base and the city’s airport.

Battle for Mosul: Who controls what

Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, is now the scene of a battle for control between Iraqi, Kurdish, and ISIL forces.

In June 2014, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) forces captured Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city. Over two years later, it is ISIL's last stronghold in the country.

The city, which still houses more than one million people, is now being besieged on all sides by a coalition of Iraqi and Kurdish troops, with additional support from Western forces. If ISIL is driven out of the city, the armed group no longer has any significant presence in Iraq, as this map of control shows.

According to the United Nations, the battle for Mosul has the potential to become one of the largest humanitarian disasters in history.

Shown below are a map of the broader Mosul area and which faction controls which area, and a map showing the city of Mosul with its most important roads and who controls which areas inside the city.

Eight Kurdish Yezidis Freed from IS Captivity

Basnews English

15/03/2017 - 01:25

Eight Kurdish Yezidis Freed from IS Captivity
DUHOK — Kurdistan Region’s Directorate of Yezidi Abductee Affairs has revealed that eight Kurdish Yezidis were freed from Islamic State (IS) captivity on Tuesday and brought to safety in Kurdistan Region.

Hussein Qa’idi, head of the directorate, confirmed to BasNews that the rescued Yezidis are all from Sinjar and they were abducted by the extremists back in August 2014 when the city was overrun by IS.

Three of them are children and five are women, the official said, noting that Kurdish security forces have transferred them to Duhok province of Kurdistan Region where they reunited with their families after more than two years.

Qa’idi thanked Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani for sparing no efforts in supporting their campaign to rescue every Yezidi abductee, saying that nearly 2,900 Kurdish Yezidis have so far been freed from the jihadists’ captivity; but yet more than 3,500 others remain at the hand of IS.

He also criticized the central government of Iraq for failing to provide any help to rescue the Yezidi abductees.

40% OF WESTERN MOSUL INFRASTRUCTURE DESTROYED: OFFICIAL
Iraq, March 14, 2017

About 40 percent of the infrastructure in western Mosul has been destroyed by the Islamic State (IS) militants, and during the battle with the coalition forces, according to a municipal official from the Nineveh province.

IS militants blew up residential as well as government properties, said Nineveh province council member, Hassan Sabaawi. Detonations in dense areas of Wadi Hajar and Tayaran districts resulted in greater destruction.

Earlier in January, before the operation moved to the western half of the city, Parliament Member from Nineveh, Majed Shinkali, stated that 80% of Mosul had been destroyed.

Also in January, the Iraqi government approved 27 UN-sponsored reconstruction and renovation projects in Mosul. However, they have not yet commenced and there is no set timeline for their implementation.

The operation to recapture Mosul from the IS militants began on October 17 last year. Eastern Mosul was declared liberated on January 24th and the operation progressed to the western Mosul on February 19th.

Since losing Fallujah in 2016, the Islamic State forces have retreated west towards the Syrian border, where they will likely make their last stand against the Iraqi Army near Al-Qa’im.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army forces arrested on Wednesday ten Islamic State members in western Mosul, including the extremist group’s so-called oil and finance ministers.

BasNews quoted Col. Thamer Jaber, from the 9th division, saying Iraqi troops captured two more villages in western Mosul after intense fighting with IS fighters. He said the forces were backed by an aerial cover from the U.S.-led international military coalition.

Battles, according to the officer, left 11 militants dead, including four suicide bombers. He added that ten others were also arrested, including IS “oil minister”, Hossam Gala-Eddin, and finance minister, Ghazi al-Tikriti, but did not mention their exact nationalities.

Commanders said Tuesday they became in control over 90 percent of the Old City, a much-wanted target believed decisive for putting government troops closer to final victory.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said hours earlier that the battle for Mosul was entering its final stages.
