Iraqi Army Discovers US-Made Missiles in ISIS's Military Base in Mosul
Iraqi army and popular forces have discovered a number of US-made missiles from a military position of the ISIS (ISIL, IS, Daesh) in the Southern part of Mosul, informed local sources disclosed after the first group of pro-government troops opened their way into Southern Mosul on Monday.

"Several US-made missiles were found in al-Shoura region to the South of Mosul," a local source said on Monday.

The Iraqi army and popular forces had found US-made missiles in Anbar province several times before.

Provincial officials confirmed that the US-made weapons were sent by the US-led anti-ISIL coalition airplane for the ISIL terrorists in Anbar province.

Meantime, Iraqi security officials announced that the ISIL has sent US-made military equipment to Tal Afar region in the last two days to stand strong against Iraqi popular forces' impending attack to capture the region.

"The ISIL terrorists have sent US-made TOW anti-tank missiles to Tal Afar and it is quite evident that they are preparing for a long-term war," the Arabic-language media quoted an Iraqi security official as saying on Monday.

In late August 2015, a senior Iraqi intelligence official revealed that the US helicopters drop weapons and other aids for the ISIL terrorists in the Western province of al-Anbar.

"The fighters present at the forefront of fighting against the ISIL always see US helicopters flying over the ISIL-controlled areas and dropping weapons and urgent aids for them," the official who called for anonymity told FNA.

Yet, he said the helicopters could have also been sent from Turkey or Israel.

He added that in addition to dropping aids, the helicopters transfer the ISIL ringleaders and wounded members from the battleground to some hospitals in Syria or other countries which support the terrorist group.

The official cautioned that such assistance further prolongs the conflicts in Anbar, adding that when the Iraqi army and popular forces purge the terrorists from Anbar province, the US helicopters will transfer the ISIL ringleaders to other regions to prevent the Iraqi forces' access to ISIL secrets.

Also in March 2015, a group of Iraqi popular forces known as Al-Hashad Al-Shabi shot down the US Army helicopter that was carrying weapons for the ISIL in the Western parts of Al-Baghdadi region in Al-Anbar province.

Meantime in February 2015, a senior lawmaker disclosed that Iraq’s army had shot down two British planes as they were carrying weapons for the ISIL terrorists in Al-Anbar province.

“The Iraqi Parliament’s National Security and Defense Committee has access to the photos of both planes that are British and have crashed while they were carrying weapons for the ISIL,” al-Zameli said.

Iraq, November 3, 2016

Aid agencies said on Wednesday families who have fled Mosul and surrounding towns were starting to reach displacement camps away from the fighting, as Iraqi forces press on with an offensive to retake Islamic State's last major stronghold in Iraq.

The battle that started on Oct. 17 with air and ground support from a U.S.-led coalition is shaping up as the largest in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion of 2003.

On Tuesday Iraqi forces battled Islamic State fighters on the eastern edge of Mosul as the campaign entered a new phase of urban warfare.

The United Nations has said the Mosul offensive could trigger a humanitarian crisis and a possible refugee exodus if the civilians inside in Mosul seek to escape, with up to one million people fleeing in a worst-case scenario.

"People are starting to arrive now from the small towns around Mosul," Joe Cropp of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

"We've been aware that this has been coming up and the preparations have been going on for two months," he said in a phone interview from northern Iraq.

IFRC said many people were arriving with only the clothes they were wearing and those who reached Khazer camp, east of Mosul, said they had to walk through the night.

"We were so worried the children would cry out during the night and we would be discovered," IFRC quoted one of the mothers as saying.

Thousands more people are expected to arrive in the coming days and weeks as fighting around Mosul intensifies, IFRC said. Throughout the country, some 10 million Iraqis are in need of aid.

"Local communities across the country are sharing the responsibility, taking in millions of displaced people. But even with the greatest will in the world they cannot accommodate a million more," Gyula Kadar, IFRC operations manager, said in a statement.

The International Organization for Migration said nearly 21,000 people have been displaced since the start of the campaign, excluding thousands of villagers taken into Mosul by retreating jihadists who used them as human shields.

The U.N. said in October a total of six camps had been built that can accommodate 50,000 people. Efforts were underway to construct 11 more.

Claire Mason, humanitarian policy and advocacy adviser at Save the Children said for security reasons the charity was unable to get too close to Mosul and was readying mobile child protection teams to assist people scattered outside the city.

Betsy Baldwin, Iraq response director from the charity Tearfund, said several hundred people arrived the previous night in one of the camps where the charity was helping.

Baldwin said her organization had been on standby since summer, preparing tents, stoves and winter clothes which it was planning to distribute this week.

"We are just hoping that we can safely access people in need, that the civilians can move safely out of the conflict zones," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation from Iraq.

International Rescue Committee said in a statement on Wednesday it had heard of people inside Mosul buying cloth to use as white flags when the army arrives.

IRAQ FORCES FACE TOUGH RESISTANCE
Iraq, November 5, 2016
Extremist fighters unleashed a deluge of bombs and gunfire on Friday on Iraqi forces punching into the streets of Mosul for the first time, forcing some units into a partial pullback.

Some armoured vehicles from the elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) returned from the streets of Al-Karamah a few hours after moving in and encountering fierce resistance from the Daesh group, an AFP correspondent reported.

“We weren’t expecting such resistance. They had blocked all the roads,” said one officer, as top brass considered whether or not to attempt a fresh foray.

“There are large numbers of extremists... It was preferable to pull back and devise a new plan,” the CTS officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Some CTS forces remained inside the city however and there were at least five regiments involved in the operation launched on Friday, making it hard to gauge the extent of the pullback.

After daybreak, bulldozers and tanks backed by air strikes had pushed into the streets of Mosul from the east for the first time since Iraqi forces launched a broad offensive to retake the city on Oct.17.

The CTS’s “Mosul regiment,” which was the last to leave the city when the extremists overran it in June 2014, immediately faced “tough resistance”, commander Muntadhar Salem told reporters.

The gunfire was almost uninterrupted for hours and reports from the front crackling into CTS radios said Daesh had set up barriers and laid bombs all along the streets.

Air strikes by the US-led coalition had intensified over the past two days, despite the smoke from burning tyres set on fire by Daesh in a bid to provide cover.

They ebbed when the push on the ground got under way however.

The resistance came despite widespread reports in recent weeks that top Daesh commanders had left the eastern side of the city and crossed the Tigris river to regroup on its west bank.

An estimated 3,000 to 5,000 Daesh fighters are scattered across the sprawling city, Iraq’s second largest, where a million-plus civilians are believed to be trapped. There has been an exodus of civilians from outlying villages this week but few managed to find a safe way out of the city itself.

Umm Ali could not hold back her tears when she spoke of her constant fear the extremists would take her young sons.

“They kept coming to our home. Sometimes they’d knock on the door at 10:00 pm,” she said. “They took our car, saying: ‘This is the land of the caliphate, it belongs to us’.”

Civilians seeking refuge in Kurdish-controlled areas east of the city recounted tales of Daesh brutality.

“We’re coming from the world of the dead back to the world of the living,” said Raed Ali, 40, who fled his home in the nearby village of Bazwaya.

In a rare audio message released on Thursday, Daesh leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi urged his fighters to defend the city where he proclaimed the “caliphate” in June 2014.

The public announcement he made from the pulpit of Mosul’s Great Mosque of Al Nuri heralded the most ambitious and brutal experiment in modern extremism, a period marked by mass murder, attempted genocide and slavery.

But his “caliphate” has been shrinking steadily since mid-2015 and the loss of Mosul would leave Raqa, in Syria, as the group’s only major urban stronghold.

Daesh has been increasingly pragmatic in its tactics this year, falling back in the face of superior force even in some of its emblematic bastions such as Fallujah in Iraq and Dabiq in Syria.

However Baghdadi, in his first message of 2016, called on Daesh fighters still in Mosul to make a stand for Iraq’s second city.

Iraqi Army Enters North of ISIS-Held City of Mosul

Iraqi Forces near Mosul

Alwaght- Iraqi forces advanced further into northern Mosul as the large-scale operation to liberate the city from ISIS has entered its 20th day.

The Iraqi Army has entered the northern residential areas of the city as the offensive in the south has been going on for some days.

"Army forces have stormed al-Sada district, the first residential neighborhood in northern Mosul,” army officer Ahmed al-Jabouri of the Nineveh Operations Command told Turkish Anadolu news agency.

“Our forces are engaged in street battles with ISIS fighters” in the district, he said.

The units of Iraqi army continued with their major operation to liberate the northern city of Mosul from ISIS and made terrorists withdraw from eastern parts of the city.

Previously Iraqi forces had reached Mosul residential areas in the south and have managed to liberate six neighborhoods in the city.

Iraqi counter-terrorism forces recaptured the districts of Al-Malayin, Al-Samah, Al-Khazra, Kirkukli, Al-Quds and Al-Karama, Abdulamir Rashid Yarullah on Friday.

The forces managed to raise Iraqi national flags over government buildings in recaptured areas.

Late Thursday, Iraq’s Defense Ministry announced that, over the course of the last four days, 125 ISIS terrorists have been killed and 24 villages and areas in Nineveh province -- of which Mosul is the regional capital -- had been wrested from the terrorist group.

On October 17, the Iraqi army backed by Popular Mobilization Forces and Peshmerga forces launched a wide-ranging operation aimed at retaking ISIS last bastion in Iraq, Mosul fell to the terrorist group in mid-2014

Mosul Battle Rages as IS Bombings Elsewhere in Iraq Kill 20

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (SUSANNAH GEORGE) - Nov 6, 2016, 9:00:55 AM

Mosul, Iraq (AP) -- Iraq's special forces worked Sunday to clear neighborhoods on the eastern edge of Islamic State-held Mosul as bombings launched by the extremist group elsewhere in the country killed at least 20 people.

The Mosul offensive has slowed in recent days as Iraqi forces have pushed into more densely populated areas, where they cannot rely as much on airstrikes and shelling because of the risk posed to civilians, who have been told to stay in their homes.

"There are a lot of civilians and we are trying to protect them," said Lt. Col. Muhanad al-Timimi. "This is one of the hardest battles that we've faced till now."

Some civilians are fleeing the combat zone, while IS militants are holding others back for use as human shields, making it harder for Iraqi commanders on the ground to get approval for requested U.S.-led coalition air strikes. Iraq's special forces are some of the country's best troops, but they still largely rely on air support to clear terrain.

Iraqi forces first entered the eastern edge of the city on Tuesday. On Friday, forces began pushing into Mosul proper, but so far have advanced just over a kilometer (mile) into the city.

On the southern front, Iraqi forces are still some 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the city center. The fighting is centered on the town of Hamam al-Alil, where Associated Press journalists could hear gunfire and saw attack helicopters firing on IS positions.

Kurdish peshmerga fighters launched mortar rounds and fired heavy artillery at the IS-held town of Bashiqa, about 8 miles (13 kilometers) northeast of Mosul. The town, which is believed to be largely empty except for IS militants, has been encircled by Kurdish forces.

The extremists captured Mosul and surrounding areas in 2014, and have had plenty of time to dig trenches, block off roads and mine approaches to the city.

"Daesh dug trenches that they filled with water and they have a lot of suicide attackers and car bombs," said al-Timimi, using the Arabic acronym for the IS group.

The extremists meanwhile struck far from the front lines with a series of bombings.

The deadliest attack took place in the city of Samarra, 60 miles (95 kilometers) north of Baghdad, which is home to a major Shiite shrine. Provincial spokesman Ali al-Hamdani said the attacker set off a bomb-packed ambulance in a parking lot near Shiite pilgrims before detonating his explosives vest.

The attack killed 11 people, including at least four Iranians, and wounded up to 100 other people.

Another suicide attacker rammed an explosives-laden car into a busy checkpoint outside the city of Tikrit, killing at least nine people. Al-Hamdani said five female students, a woman and three policemen were killed in the attack, while 25 others were wounded.

IS had also captured Tikrit during its lightning blitz across Iraq in the summer of 2014. Iraqi forces drove the militants from the city, around 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of Baghdad, in April 2015.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Bahram Ghasemi, condemned the two attacks, which he said had killed 21 people, including 10 Iranian pilgrims, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported. It was not immediately possible to reconcile the conflicting tolls, which are common in the chaotic aftermath of attacks.

In an online statement, IS claimed all three bombings and said the ambulance bomb was set off by a second suicide attacker. The AP could not verify the authenticity of the statement, which was posted on a militant website commonly used by the extremists.

In the capital, Baghdad, a series of smaller bombings killed at least 10 people and wounded 21 others, according to police and medical officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. No one immediately claimed the attacks, but they bore the hallmarks of IS.

Associated Press writers Sinan Salaheddin and Murtada Faraj in Baghdad, Cristiana Mesquita near Bashiqa, Iraq, Balint Szlanko near Hamam al-Alil, Iraq, and Maamoun Youssef in Cairo contributed to this report.

Iraq, November 6, 2016
After Iraqi security forces eventually recapture Mosul, the Daesh group will be left with only Raqa in neighboring Syria as a bastion, and the extremists’ self-proclaimed “caliphate” will be largely gone.

The US-led coalition has been striking Daesh across both countries for more than two years, and has long held Raqa in its sights -- a Daesh defeat there would be a defining endpoint of the campaign.

But Pentagon chief Ashton Carter surprised commanders last week when he declared the actual assault on Raqa could start “in the next few weeks,” after British Defense Minister Michael Fallon made a similar prediction.

Privately, many high-ranking Pentagon officials were caught off-guard, and expressed skepticism the Raqa push could start so soon, given the Gordian knot of unpredictability in the chaos of Syria.

Carter’s timeline is “a little more ahead of what I have been hearing so far,” one US defense official told reporters on condition of anonymity, choosing his words carefully.

Another US defense official said the military’s expectations for Raqa -- a city with a pre-war population of about 220,000 -- didn’t match Carter’s timeline.

And a third military official said that while the assault could theoretically start in weeks, it may take “single-digit months,” pushing the possible timeline out to “nine months or less.”

That official added the assault may yet start before 2017, “but it could drag on further for other reasons we can’t control.”

“It’s up to” the local forces, he added. “We are ready if they are ready.”

Even before the start of a ground offensive, likely to be fought along similar lines to the one happening in Mosul, coalition planes must complete the “isolation,” “shaping” and “envelopment” of Raqa. This entails non-stop strikes on Daesh fighting positions and the slicing of supply lines into and out of the northern Syrian city.

Coalition spokesman Colonel John Dorrian said those operations had already partially succeeded, and had helped cut routes from Raqa to and from Europe.

“What we’re talking about is a higher level of isolation that greatly reduces the freedom of movement of Daesh to go into and come out of that city,” he said.

IMHO, who cares about pursuing them into Syria ! I say kick them out of Iraq entirely, maybe 1 mile into Syrian territory to create a safe zone. Then pull back to the Iraqi border, and set up a impenetrable Militarized Zone. This way you can catch, what is left of ISISL, in a cross fire with the Russian/Syrian line and then just mow them down . Period. Should anyone advance toward Iraq again you shoot them in the Safe Zone. Do this until things stabilize in Syria.

translation / Anis al - Saffar
{it} everywhere this Iraqi intelligence officer said ,waving his arm as if he clears the air from where he was standing, in the ancient Christian village, even the horizon. The Iraqi captain 's mission is to search for tunnels dug by terrorists Daesh {}. Ring the ground with his foot and completed: {here .. We have found the one .. Then on three .. It is now six. Right here. In that place there is more and more}. Villages that restored the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army from the grip of «Daesh» During the past three weeks were punctuated by spending as permeate Alnkharab beehive, many of them mg explosives.
Commanders in the Iraqi forces say that the past three days have seen the toughest battles during the attack the city of Mosul, it has increased things worse those heavy spending that was allowing terrorists «Daesh» to appear as if out of nowhere to strike and then pull back to the hidden Moadahm.
Iraqi army spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Messenger says: «It was a battle of the utmost violence, particularly in on Friday and Saturday with the incursion by troops deeper inside the city , which remained in the hands of «Daesh» for two years. It is a battle from house to house. »
While Iraqi special forces engaged in battles to wrest the eastern neighborhoods of Mosul leaders say the tunnels scattered all over the place, in addition to the holes that pass through the walls of buildings, allow terrorists« Daesh »hiding that move quickly to ambush the advancing force and then run away and hide.
says the commander of one of the armored units , recalling that he was driving his tank Brams on the eastern side of Mosul when he saw a dozen enemy elements were running in the street in front of his cannon, and did not Albthoa that disappeared into the ground.
said Col. Falah al - Obeidi of the Iraqi counter - terrorist forces: « as if we are fighting two wars in two cities. Here we have the streets of the war, and there we have the underground city where hiding. »He continues:« it is difficult now to say that the area has been completely liberated, although our control on the face of the earth may be able Aldoaash go back and emerge from the underground like rats. »
Says al - Obeidi and other leaders that they were aware that fighting among civilians and human shields in Mosul will be difficult, but spending the complexity of the situation and worsen. »officers describe the battlefield as being closer to the ball , including a flat surface because the threat is coming to you from the sides and from above and below.Journalists companions Iraqi special forces in their reports say the terrorists «Daesh» show from inside the tunnels after the area has been secured to shoot at the troops.
No one number of spending knows, because «Daesh» fighters dug a network of tunnels and very wide in Fallujah, recaptured by troops Iraq in June.
this tactic did not innovations of «Daesh», because the tunnels were used in wars for thousands of years, a tactic that has a special guerrilla advantages asymmetric with regular forces.
here , too, in the town of Krimlah, I discovered elements of the Christian resistance spending tight engraved in the ground was the terrorists «Daesh» they use to hide from the monitor exploration and rocket - aircraft artillery and air strikes by US - led forces . I found spending also sits on a hill above the historic archaeological site of an ancient Assyrian city, also seized «Daesh» the Monastery of Santa Barbara , and there are also dug a perforated floor of the church. This village represents the battle between Alexander the Great and the Persian king Dara in 331 BC site.
Some tunnels stretching for hundreds of meters, and the dirt extracted them Lumpy solid flawless stone crusher. Corridors lit incandescent light bulbs, and at one spending in the village of vertical found disingenuous to sleep under the ground littered with mattresses, blankets, and some rooms have covered the walls with paper colored.
Iraqi forces also found weapons caches underground small kitchens and warehouses food and rooms stacked with explosives. On the land of one spending there was onion sparse and eggplant and sugar poured, and there were dishes did not wash an article where the remnants of beans stiff.
To hide «Daesh» effects of drilling from the eyes of the march exploration planes and satellites were usually resort to hide the dust of the pits. In the near entrances to tunnels houses filled with earth from its territory rooms and even I found the ceiling.
Longest tunnel has been discovered so far about its extension of ten kilometers and is located on the outskirts of Mosul, and Iraqi leaders say, has been carried out by terrorists «Daesh» and may have been used Jabra civilians in transfer soil. the
Iraqis say diggers have used tunnels dug in the devices originally designed to work mining the construction of mines and oil wells excavated. One of the biggest rigs this found a boat on the half - tracked mechanism in the tunnel outside the town of «new mufti» located on the outskirts of
Mosul.
Says the Iraqi intelligence officer, who works within the band ninth in the Iraqi army armored , who asked not to be named because of his accuracy, his men It can not detect all the entrances and exits of the tunnels because of car bombs and explosives. So turn whenever they found a suspicious hole to throw a grenade in the dark and then Alhakunha with burning tires. Although this can not be assured that the elements of«Daesh» will not return to Mbaghtthm.

Iraq, November 10, 2016

U.S. and coalition military forces continued to attack Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorists in Iraq and Syria on Monday, Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve officials reported yesterday.

Officials reported details of the latest strikes, noting that assessments of results are based on initial reports.

Strikes in Syria

Attack, bomber, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft conducted 17 strikes in Syria:

  • Near Ayn Isa, 15 strikes engaged seven ISIL tactical units, destroyed five fighting positions, three vehicles, two bridges and an artillery system and damaged three supply routes.
  • Near Mara, a strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed a vehicle bomb.
  • Near Palmyra, a strike engaged two ISIL tactical units, destroyed a vehicle and damaged a fighting position.

Strikes in Iraq

Attack, fighter, remotely piloted and rotary-wing aircraft and rocket artillery conducted 10 strikes in Iraq, coordinated with and in support of Iraq’s government:

  • Near Beiji, a strike destroyed an ISIL rocket rail, a generator and a bulldozer.
  • Near Mosul, five strikes engaged five ISIL tactical units and a staging area; destroyed six fighting positions, six mortar systems, four vehicle bombs, two vehicles, two rocket systems, two ISIL-held buildings and a command and control node; suppressed a heavy machine gun, a sniper position and a rocket system; damaged an ISIL vehicle; and degraded three tunnels.
  • Near Rawah, a strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed an ISIL-held building.
  • Near Sinjar, a strike engaged an ISIL weapons production facility.
  • Near Taji, a strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit.
  • Near Tal Afar, a strike engaged an ISIL vehicle bomb factory.

Task force officials define a strike as one or more kinetic events that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative, effect. Therefore, officials explained, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone ISIL vehicle is one strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against buildings, vehicles and weapon systems in a compound, for example, having the cumulative effect of making those targets harder or impossible for ISIL to use. Accordingly, officials said, they do not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target. Ground-based artillery fired in counterfire or in fire support to maneuver roles is not classified as a strike.

Part of Operation Inherent Resolve

The strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to eliminate the ISIL terrorist group and the threat they pose to Iraq, Syria, and the wider international community. The destruction of ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq further limits the terrorist group’s ability to project terror and conduct operations, officials said.

Coalition nations that have conducted strikes in Iraq include the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Jordan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Coalition nations that have conducted strikes in Syria include the United States, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, France, Jordan, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
