Mosul: Iraqi Troops Storm Biggest Military Camp in North

MOSUL — On the second day of the west Mosul operation, the Iraqi counter-terrorism troops managed to retake two more villages in south of Mosul and started storming the biggest Iraqi army base in northern Iraq.

Major Ali Mohsen from the Iraqi elite forces told BasNews "the troops are rapidly advancing from the southern axis and have freed the villages al-Saj and al-Hawi."

The elite forces have also began to storm the Ghazlani military camp, anticipated to be fully retaken within the next few hours, Mohsen said.

The Iraqi officer also added that 25 Islamic State (IS) militants including four suicide bombers were killed today with seizing two car bombs which were parked in the near Ghazlani camp.

He pointed out that "the engineering units dealt with a lot of explosives and ordnance left by IS to prevent the troops from recapturing the camp."

US, UK troops partake in offensive to retake western Mosul from ISIS

US Troops in Iraq
US Troops in Iraq

Special Air Service (SAS) troops led a fresh offensive on Sunday to liberate Iraq’s last remaining city under ISIS terrorist group's control, the Daily Mail said on Monday.

The special forces, along with US Green Beret and Delta Force commandos, are embedded with Iraqi and Kurdish fighters in western Mosul, the country’s second city.

Elite soldiers from Britain and the US are supposed to be limited to advisory roles, but have been dragged into the battle to free 650,000 civilians, which expected to last several months.

They were part of a massive Iraqi-led force facing what is expected to be its toughest battle in the four-month offensive to retake Mosul because it has older, narrower streets than the eastern section, which has now been recaptured.

Hundreds of thousands of civilians still living in the west of the city have been told to shelter at home.

Iraq declared eastern Mosul ‘fully liberated’ last month, but ISIS has continued to launch attacks, with suicide bombers targeting troops there yesterday.

Sadr proposes post-Mosul roadmap, conditions U.S. troops pullout

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has proposed a roadmap for the period following the anticipated liberation of Mosul from Islamic State, setting the withdrawal of foreign troops as a condition.

In a statement by his office on Monday, the firebrand cleric set out a 29-point roadmap for political and social co-existence in Iraq following the recapture of Iraq’s second largest city from the extremist group. Among those points was a demand for the Iraqi government to urge “occupier troops, even the so-called friendly ones, from Iraqi territories so as to preserve the state’ prestige and sovereignty,” as he put it.

Al-Sadr has been a central player in the political and militancy scene in Iraq, and had for sometime, following the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, been branded an enemy to the United States, being an ardent opponent to foreign military presence in the country.

The U.S. maintains nearly 5000 soldiers in Iraq, and is leading a 65-state international military coalition to fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Other aspects of Sadr’s proposition include exclusive mandates for Iraqi government forces to take hold of recaptured Iraqi regions. He also demanded United Nations-sponsored elections, a special body for minority affairs in Iraq and a national reconciliation debate.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) recaptured on Monday the last village on the road between western Mosul and the strategic town of Tal Afar from Islamic State militants.

The force’s media service said it took over the village of Sahaji, effectively cutting out the last road linking IS stronghold of Tal Afar with western Mosul. The outlet said earlier on Monday that 23 militants were killed in a PMU bombardment near Tal Afar.

Also on Monday, Federal Police service said in a statement the forces killed nine Islamic State militants, defused four explosive barrels and seized 50 projectiles belonging to the group while advancing to Al-Bouseif hills.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a brief announcement on Sunday that security forces launched an operation to retake the western side of Mosul, Islamic State militants’ largest stronghold in Iraq which the group took over in 2014. He said on January 24th that government forces, backed by popular militias and U.S.-led coalition troops, had cleared the whole of the eastern region from militants after more than three months of fighting.

Recapturing Mosul would represent the strongest blow to Islamic State’s proclaimed “Islamic Caliphate”.

Commanders at the Joint Forces Command and the Federal Police said Sunday they killed 79 militants, recaptured 17 villages and 120 square kilometers of western Mosul on the first day of operations.

Chinadawg,  Yup you are absolutely correct U.S.A. will stick around to ensure no more ISIS or sectarian violence but most importantly Iran will loose their foothold for terrorist activities in Iraq.   We will be in Iraq for many years into the future.

The Terrifying ISIS Sleeper Cells of Mosul -Daily Beast

February 20 2017 07:01 PM
.
.

Florian Neuhof/ Daily Beast

The “My Fair Lady” restaurant was making a brisk trade when the suicide bomber stepped into the open-fronted eatery flanking a busy roundabout in east Mosul and detonated the explosives strapped around his waist, "Daily Beast" reported.

The blast swept through the cavernous interior, killing staff and guests enjoying a lunch of kebab, salad, and soup in one of the city’s most famous restaurants.

The owners had defiantly reopened the My Fair Lady, or Sayidati al-Jamila in Arabic, soon after ISIS was forced from the east bank of the Tigris, which bisects the city and now forms a natural barrier against the extremists. With a reputation for good food, and occupying a prime spot in the bustling Zuhour neighborhood, it quickly became popular with locals and security personnel alike, in the process also attracting attention of the wrong kind.

"The restaurant was targeted because life was coming back to Mosul. This restaurant is the center of Zuhour, and Zuhour is the center of east Mosul," says Mohammed, the son of one of the owners.

The 22-year-old Mohammed, who wears a stylish leather jacket and trimmed beard, is close to tears as he recounts how his younger brother, his uncle, and his cousin were among the 10 fatalities of the Feb. 10 attack. His uncle, Hajji Nasser, was one of the three brothers who ran the restaurant, a well-known figure in Mosul and beyond.

When his death became known, condolences began flooding in not just from the city, but from all over Iraq and even from Iraqis living in Europe. Moslawis are horrified not just by his murder, but also by the terror threat that remains alive in the liberated part of the city even as a major new Iraqi government offensive has begun to take the western half.

The suicide attack on the restaurant was not the first bombing in government-controlled Mosul, as ISIS tries to prevent normality from returning to any part of the city, and these attacks raise questions about the extent to which the city as a whole can be brought under control even if the current offensive manages to push out the dug-in ISIS fighters on the western side of the Tigris.

In December, three car bombs reportedly disguised as a funeral procession killed 23 civilians in a crowded part of Gogjali, an outer suburb. From the other side of the river, the insurgents also target east Mosul with mortars and drones that drop grenades on groups of civilians and even schools that have reopened.

Hostilities on the east bank ceased in January after Iraqi special forces cleared it of insurgents in four months of fighting. But as the bombings show, the military was not able to eliminate the extremist threat, now embodied by ISIS sleeper cells.

Image1_220172018588627623406.png

With the elite counterterrorism troops redeploying for the assault on west Mosul, the east is now held by a motley mix of army units, militia groups, federal and local police. Rooting out ISIS cells has fallen to the local Nineveh police and the National Security Service (NSS) intelligence agency.

The Nineveh police, Kalashnikov-wielding men in blue combat fatigues, ride on massive U.S.-made pick-up trucks mounted with heavy machine guns and patrol the shot-up neighborhoods of east Mosul, navigating their vehicles past bomb craters and collapsed houses to patrol and set up checkpoints.

For this police force, named after the governorate surrounding Mosul, providing security for the city’s inhabitants is a mammoth task.

In part, this is because ISIS conducted extensive recruitment during its two-and-a-half-year rule of the city.

“There are a lot more cells in Mosul now than before the occupation. When people here saw a lot of the country fall to Daesh [ISIS], they thought the government would never take control again and they joined the ISIS,” says Col. Isham Mahmoud of the NSS.

As ISIS numbers rose, the police force was decimated. The terrorists embarked on a campaign of extermination after storming the city in 2014. Thousands of policemen and security personnel are thought to have been killed after being hunted down by the victorious terror group. The bodies were dumped in mass graves outside the city.

“Daesh took all the policemen and army members they could find and killed them. The majority of the police were killed,” says Ziad Tarek. The 27-year-old policeman was blinded by a roadside bomb before ISIS took over Mosul in 2014, but was tortured and ordered to repent for his involvement in the security forces by the city’s new masters. Fearing for his life, Ziad went into hiding. Over time, he found out about the death of many of his friends in the police.

Prior to ISIS, the police in Mosul numbered 28,000 men, according to Col. Uday Saber, who fled the city for the autonomous Kurdish region, and whose police unit fought alongside the military as it rolled back the caliphate to the doors of Mosul over the past two years. Only 6,000 men now remain in the ranks of the Nineveh police, according to Col. Saber. “There are many men about whom we have no information, we don’t know if they are dead or not,” he says.

Not all have been killed. Policemen and some soldiers that managed to flee Mosul in 2014 are being trained by the Australian and Spanish military in camps in Baghdad, Kut, and Diyala. A first batch of 1,700 men have completed a five-week training course in Baghdad, and are about to be deployed in Mosul.

In a city where sectarian rifts were in the past exacerbated by the poor behavior of the security forces, bolstering the local police is a wise move.

The Iraqi army divisions stationed in Mosul before the ISIS takeover were deeply unpopular with the local population. Derisively referred to as “Maliki’s army,” the mainly Shia force became synonymous with discrimination against the country’s Sunni minority by the government under the former prime minister, Nouri al Maliki. These grievances helped ISIS rout a force several times their number when they stormed the predominantly Sunni city.

The Shia militias that now hold the ground in the liberated areas of east Mosul enjoy a dubious reputation, and stand accused of serious human rights abuses against Sunni civilians in virtually every campaign they have been deployed.

“It’s important that the policemen are from Mosul,” says Col. Saber. “Before Daesh there were a lot of issues between the Iraqi security forces and the people. The fall of Mosul was more about political than military issues.”

Image1_220172019046324435430.png

The colonel only returned to Mosul a few days ago himself, and is doing his best to bring back law and order, and above else security. His officers have set up a checkpoint on a busy thoroughfare, where they pick out vehicles for closer inspection. On a side street blocked by a police pick-up parked across the road, the unit has requisitioned an abandoned house. The plain building with cheap furniture and an unkempt garden was occupied by ISIS fighters before the liberation.

On the patio kneel two men, their eyes blindfolded and their hands bound. They have been detained on suspicion of belonging to the ISIS, and are awaiting interrogation.

ISIS and its precursors have deep roots in Mosul, running a terrorist network that extorted millions of dollars a month and assassinated opponents long before it chased out the army.

After over two years of barbarous Islamist rule, support for the group has ebbed, and more locals are coming forward to help the police.

"The extremists became active in 2004. It will be difficult to eliminate them. But right now it is different, because we are getting tip-offs from the people," says Col. Saber.

In a residential road cordoned off by blast walls in the Nour area, the police have established a provisional headquarter in east Mosul. On the first floor of a modern house, an operations room is furnished with tables lined up and down its middle, and white boards are hung on the walls next to an Iraqi flag and an ancient Kalashnikov. The boards are filled with columns detailing unit strength and ammunition supplies.

An officer sits at the table, waiting for a couple of budget mobile phones to start ringing. He does not have to wait long. Throughout the day, Moslawis call a hotline number broadcast on Iraqi TV to inform about ISIS sleeper cells in east Mosul. The NSS and the police work together to gather this information, which is handwritten into ledgers and then entered into a computer in the corner of the room.

"We are getting more information about Daesh cells now than before the city fell, because Daesh was so brutal and the situation in the city was so bad when they were in control," says Col. Ibrahim, a veteran of the Nineveh police force, as he sits in the operations room.

The officers can receive up to 200 calls a day, they say. Behind closed doors, security officials admit that one of the reasons they cannot cope with this volume is the detention facilities in the city are packed to the brim, and they have to wait for the suspects to be carted off to a larger facility in the nearby town of Qayyarah.

Fearing retribution, many people in east Mosul are still afraid to speak out against ISIS. For some, this is because the understaffed police are not ruthless enough.

"The police arrest Deash members,” says Mohammed, anger flickering in his eyes as he scans the gloomy insides of his gutted restaurant. “But they let them go again after two days because there isn't any evidence of them committing a crime. People are afraid to tell them about sleeper cells because they fear that they will be killed for speaking out.”

I know we have all gotten used to "gameplans" getting broadcast the last 8 years, but IMHO Mad Dog will use that to his advantage.  "we are going to come up with a plan by the end of the month and then tell Trump his options" is what is being broadcast...I think what he really means is, "by the end of the month, I am going to have Mosel on silver platter to deliver to Trump"

Go get em' boys!

ISF Retakes Strategic Villages South Of Mosul

MOSUL — The Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) recaptured three strategically important villages south of the city of Mosul as part of the ongoing offensive against the Islamic State (IS) in Western Mosul, an Iraqi army source said.

The representative of the Iraqi United Forces, Brigadier-General Yahij Rasul, who spoke to Sputnik on Sunday said that the forces from the 9th Armored Division of the Iraqi army and the federal police have recaptured the villages of al-Jamasiya, Kuneitra and al-Bujuwar located south of Mosul, along the shores of the Tigris river.

Currently the Iraqi forces are continuing to advance towards the western parts of Mosul, aiming to retake the villages of al-Zakrutia and al-Buseif. The advancing is in accordance with the plans made before the beginning of the operation, Rasul said.

He further explained that the 9th Armored Division has liberated the village of Bahira, west of Mosul, and three villages located along the Mosul-Baghdad highway.

In addition, Rasul noted that the IS militants are not putting up a strong resistance due to the losses the group faced in the past few weeks.

The Iraqi forces, supported by the international coalition's air force, launched an offensive on IS in western Mosul on Sunday, aiming at liberating the remaining IS-held part of the city.

ISIS operatives flee Mosul as battle rages

Iran colludes with ISIS as battle rages on

Mostapha Hassan

Tehran received  about two hundred ISIS operatives who fled on the first day of fighting to retake the right coast of Mosul, informed intelligence sources revealed.

Among those high-ranking leaders are 'the big five' who constitute the top security council of ISIS and follow up on military operations.

ISIS leaders are heading to Imam Ali camp in bulk, as well as 13 other camps provided by Iran to ISIS commanders in a hush-hush deal.

Iranian intelligence, according to the sources, offered ISIS men to leave Mosul for Iran on condition that the latter guarantees their safety as it did with Al-Qaeda leaders after war on Afghanistan.

Arrangements are being made for ISIS leaders to sneak one after another into Iran, keeping their withdrawal unfelt for rank and file fighters.

This secret withdrawal aims to hide the grim fact that ISIS incurred an outright loss in the ongoing battle.

ISIS foreign fighters get back to Europe

Reports also revealed that ISIS fighters partaking in the Mosul right coast battle are no more than 3,000.

According to this information, 2300 ISIS operative disappeared from Mosul battleground about a month ago when the battle to retake Mosul left coast started.

Most of the ISIS elements who disappeared following the victory of the Iraqi forces in the battle to take Mosul left coast have broke up into small knots, two or three-member each, the sources further explained.

They groped their way through desert to Syria to move to Europe.

Last October, the European released reports saying that there are 2500 European fighting in the ranks of ISIS, speculating their return to Germany, France, Spain, UK after initiating the Mosul battle.

Mosul is the last major ISIS bastion in Iraq.

Also, Khamenei has received a painstaking report from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' commander Mohammad Ali Jafari  and another report from the Iran spy chief Mahmoud Alavi on the benefits may be gained due to hosting commanders of ISIS terror group.

ISIS…a card for Iran to use

ISIS is very crucial for Iran. Thran always manipu lates its surrogates in the region and uses them to enforce its agenda.

ISIS will be used by Iran, especially as an important card in the conflict with the newly establishe d president Donald Trump.

ISIS will be directed by Iran to attack American bases and warships, and this also applies to the countries aligned with the US.

Also, major terror attacks will be carried out by ISIS affiliates  with no apparent evidence before the world that Iran is the real perpetrator.

The two Iranian officials stressed that protecting ISIS commanders will be an asset for Tehran to use against the Gulf states, especially Saudi Arabia.

They yet argued embracing ISIS may bolt out any terror attacks that may be waged by the group against them.

Lingering fear in Europe.

Far in Europe, EU officials voiced concerns about the flow of ISIS fighters into Europe after the end of Mosul battle.

EU Commissioner for the Security Union Julian King expressed deep concern about the flow of ISIS into Europe.

Retaking Mosul from ISIS will push the group's affiliates who are still determined to fight for the group's tenets, to Europe, he told Die Welt newspaper last October.

Small number of those fighters may represent an enormous threat to the continent, and we should prepare for this by increasing our ability to stand in the face of terror, he added.
