ARBIL - Iraqi media released new pictures Thursday of President Jalal Talabani, who has been in Germany since December 2012 after suffering a stroke, with the Kurdish leader appearing in good health.

The images, published by media loyal to Talabani's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, come with campaigning having officially begun ahead of April 30 parliamentary elections and the PUK struggling to fend off a challenge from a breakaway faction.

The three photos, taken in Berlin during the Kurdish New Year festival of Nowruz on March 21, show the Iraqi president sitting outdoors and sipping from a cup, and speaking to people dressed in traditional Kurdish garb.

"We have been informed by his private doctor that Talabani's health is improving, and he has a desire to return to the country," said Adnan Mufti, a member of the PUK's political office.

"But we are waiting for permission and instructions from his doctors."

They are the third set of pictures released to the public since Talabani left more than a year ago for Germany to receive treatment after suffering a stroke.

His PUK party, which has long formed a duopoly of power in the northern autonomous Kurdish region with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) of regional president Massud Barzani, has struggled in his absence.

It fell to third place in Kurdish regional parliamentary elections last year behind the KDP and the Goran faction, composed largely of PUK defectors.

The party's struggles have also included difficulties in picking a new leader since Talabani left the country.

Ok, I'd just like to start by saying that I have

NOT partaken of any mind-altering substances.

I'm NOT sleep-deprived.

There are websites where you can take two

pictures, merge them into one, and, just as a

funny thing, see what the child would look like

if the two people were to have a child.

Is it me, or does the guy on the right look like

a cross between Ed O'Neill ( Al Bundy from Married

With Children ) and Robert Di Nero...?

OMG McGee, you are dead on.... Bobby DeNiro might not be real thrilled.... but he's getting a tad chunky these days .... and Ed O'Neil hit chunk a roo some time ago....

Photo also suggests stroke was right side paralysis meaning left brain involvement, which would play hellll with speech, understanding and speaking, and many of the higher cognitive functions required to be a president (unless he is the rare rare person who is left handed with right brain speech etc center.... it does exist in some people and is possible... In which case, the impact would not be so noticable in his executive functioning.......

SLÊMANÎ, Kurdistan region 'Iraq',— Iraqi media released new pictures Thursday of President Jalal Talabani, who has been in Germany since December 2012 after suffering a stroke, with the Kurdish leader appearing in good health.

Is it live or memorex.

I just wonder how many times in this vicinity of the world do they make it a mystery when one dies or is deathly ill.  What's up with that?   Same with Osama Bin Laden,  Arafat etc.

It seems to me that it couldn't have happened better...Talabani has a stroke, but how bad? do we know? really?...Talabani gets shipped to Germany for treatment and a long recovery...Maliki figures, he's out of the picture so I get free reign, with no one with any backbone or "pull" to question me, so he proceeds to make himself the latest and greatest dictator and rob the country blind and hinder the country's progress at every avenue, and this happens!....Talabani gets better, just about the time that Maliki has pretty much hung his own self with that proverbial rope. If Talabani runs, come election time Maliki had better have his getaway planned or he may meet his maker sooner than he figured.
