Romney campaigns with KKK slogan

If you’ve caught Mitt Romney speak for more than five seconds during any of the recent televised GOP debates, you’d know that he spent most of his life in the private sector. But did you also know he’s been dropping KKK slogans on the campaign trail?

Among the little quips that the millionaire, wealthy, white former governor from Massachusetts has spat on the road to Washington is the urging to “keep America American.” Oddly enough, those three words aren’t all that original, as it looks as if ol’ Mitt has stolen the slogan from a group you wouldn’t normally think to cross — the Ku Klux Klan.

“Keep America American” hasn’t been an exclusively-KKK motto, nor is it necessary the slogan of those pesky, African-American-abhorring nationalists. It has, however, been adopted by the Klan and other questionable organizations for more than a century, usually in instances where silly foreigners have tried to infiltrate our god-given precious land that is the United States.

The origin of the phrase dates back to the Irish-hating politicians aligned in to the “Know Nothing Party” of the pre-Civil War era, who were peeved at the huddled masses brimming over the vast melting pot of America. Seventy years later during congressional hearings over the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924, Congressman Carter of Oklahoma supported the legislation that would limit the influx of foreigners to only 2 percent. The lawmaker saluted his Capitol Hill brethren for an attempt to “maintain absolute prohibition of immigration” into America, and though that effort wasn’t entirely successfully, he urged them to keep up attempts and banning those with “foreign ideals” from entering the US and to, instead, “keep America American.” In Walter Benn Michaels’ book Our America: Nativism, Modernism and Pluralism, the author reports that Carter’s speech was met with a round of applause.

Around the same time, the KKK also began using the branding in their propaganda, all the while setting fires to synagogues and strategically placed crosses on the front lawns of America. The wording appeared in multiple pieces of media both encouraging membership of the KKK and in detailing the history of the group, including the not-quite Pulitzer-winning book, Why You Should Become a Klansman: of Interest to White, Protestant, Native-born Americans Who Want to Keep America American.

The slogan has been muttered throughout his campaign and, as the Los Angeles Times reports, was used as recently as this week.

Former Carter administration adviser David Muston writes that, only a decade after the Klan adopted the adage, groups including the Allied Patriotic Societies, Key Men of America and the American Coalition used the same ethos in their agenda to try to kick Mexicans out of the country — something that Mitt has tackled himself during recent debates, but in classic Romney fashion, has flipped-flopped on time and time again.

Given the GOP hopeful’s tendency to drop certain things and take the opposite approach over a matter of days, it wouldn’t be too big of a surprise of Romney quickly retires the slogan in lieu of something a bit less out-dated and hopefully a whole lot more welcoming.

A note to Romney: “Putting ‘White’ back in the ‘White House’” probably won’t fly, either.

Wow, that's not only the biggest load of manure I have heard in a long time, but is also pretty cool.

If the progressive socialists have to sink THAT low, it means they are wetting their pants with fear.

I would get upset except this is so far out in left field, and so disconnected from reality, I actually pity the poster.

It's Ok big boy, go get high and it will all be over soon....

And Obama's is socialist with foward...and Biden is racist with putting people back into chains. Forget all the BS....IF, and the word is IF, we have an election we will be lucky. I personally doubt that there will not be some sort of national emergency in which Obama will plan to call the UN for martial law. He has placed us on a crash course. Our national debt can never be paid. All the plans to repay it are nothing but jokes in that every minute, day or week is another billion added. We are screwed! And IF there is another 4 years of Obama you can kiss this country goodbye and everything our forefathers died for has been given over and in vain.

I read about this on News Max's website. Apparently, there's nothing truthful about the above referenced assertion. In fact, they pretty much obliterated any hope, that anyone may have, for this to be true.

The two party system thrives off of pitting one group of individuals against the other. It boils down to those that adhere to the traditional values intended when our country was formed VS those that feel there REALLY IS room for change in our values, as well as a foundational change in our concept of "Americanism." (Barack Obama is not the first president to espouse these values. He's just the first one to speak THAT openly and that directly about them)

Regardless of my personal opinion on the matter, I believe I have respectfully described the two main groups pitted against one another during every election cycle. Their jobs (politicians) are to make sure they can whip everyone into a frenzy; in more recent times it seems they have been willing to bring us close to civil war again, while driving us just short of that impending eventuality. I say that because it's only a matter of time before one side, in one of these election cycles, WILL eventually take things too far. I think that all of us have a responsibility to keep these things in mind while we take part in the national debate. Don't fall for the "appalling" news story without fully researching the facts. Don't forget, it's "appalling" to you because it was INTENDED to be appalling to you. It doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum you represent, you are going to be poked and prodded by little stuff like this every day. Take all of this with a spoon full of sugar because it always boils down to the two main sides that are pitted against one another. The side that wants to maintain this nation's identity VS the side that believes "changing as we go" IS this nation's identity.

When you look at things in this way, it's easier to "touche" a good body blow dealt by one campaign to another because you know it's not going to effect your vote anyway lol!

There are no "moderates." The moderates are the folks that run back and forth over small issues and don't pay much attention to politics and when they do, they are normally swayed by the argument of the day or whatever is plastered on the headlines (don't necessarily read the stories). Don't get offended, it's just the truth. They represent about 18% of the voting crowd. *Remember that - "voting crowd" meaning those that are expected to vote.

We know that the politicians speak reverently of this particular voting group but not to be out-done by the news anchors that talk about the moderates. They too speak of them affectionately because they too know that THESE are the folks that will tip the election one way or the other. So depending upon the news organization and the message being broadcast by that organization, the real motivation for treating the "moderates" aka "independents" aka "undecideds", respectfully is because THEY KNOW that these are the VAST MAJORITY, of the number of potential voters, that ARE willing to vote based on the news or the headlines of the day. And THESE are the people that determine their ratings.

So, if you want to make things real simple politically, just boil it all down to what it essentially is and "vote your conscience!"

Romney doesn't "take up the mantle from the KKK saying". Your post is actually, factually a lie. Romney says, "Keep America, America! Nice try though, however weak.
