'Re-hope for the youth of Iraq'

BAGHDAD - Iraq and the United Arab Emirates reached an agreement on Monday to rebuild the famous Nuri Mosque in Mosul and Manara al-Hadba, which were destroyed last June during the battle to expel the Islamic state from the city.

During a ceremony at the National Museum in Baghdad, UAE Culture Minister Noura al-Kaabi announced that her country would finance construction work for $ 50.4 million.

"The five-year project is not only for reconstruction, but also for restoring hope to the youth of Iraq, a civilization that is thousands of years old and must be preserved," Kaabi said.

The Nuri Mosque and the Humbaa Mosque, the famous landmark of Mosul in the 12th century, were destroyed in June 2017, and the Iraqi army accused the Islamic state of planning to blow it up. The same mosque that witnessed the only public appearance of the leader of the organization Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2014.

Al-Kaabi called on "the international community to unite to protect the World Heritage sites, especially in our Arab region, which witnessed and witnessed conflicts, wars and terrorism."

The Nuri Mosque, which bears the name of Nur al-Din al-Zanki, a Syrian monarch who ruled Mosul for a period and was ordered to build in 1172, was destroyed and rebuilt in 1942 as part of a renovation project.

The Hadaba Lighthouse of the mosque, which has preserved its structure for a period of nine centuries, is the only surviving monument of the original building of the mosque. The lighthouse decorated with geometric shapes of bricks was a symbol of the conductor. Her picture was printed on a cash sheet of 10,000 dinars.

The organization of the Islamic state before its defeat in 2017 sought to make it a symbol of its rule after lifting its black banner at the top of the 45-meter lighthouse.

"This is an ambitious project, which carries a high symbolism for the return of Mosul and Iraq," UNESCO representative to Iraq Louise Hakstauzen said.

"Work is already underway and there is protection for the site now. It is surrounded by a protection barrier to prevent further loss of heritage," she said.

She added that "the signing will allow the transition to work quickly, must first clear the mosque of the packaging, and remove the rubble and documentation before starting to rebuild the mosque and lighthouse."

Iraq announced the restoration of control of Mosul in July, after nearly nine months of bloody battles against the organization of the Islamic state.

$400 million Dinars? Heck we could our Dinar together and build a hospital... That's like only $350,000 pretty cheap.

I suppose it doesn’t matter any more whether or not Iraq has an internationally recognized currency or not, they’re just going to continue to dump tons of $$$$$ into Iraq regardless.

At some point they’ll revalue: when the “ suitable environment “ presents itself, whenever that may be. They’ll undoubtedly need to talk about that aspect of the issue for a while further before they get to actually “doing” something about it “ in the near future “

as long as the Iraqi economy is supported and maintained by other countries instead of their own, they don't need a viable currency and can maintain status quo with an in-country toilet paper currency. They have managed to maintain this now since 2003 and seem to get along just fine.
