SULAIMANI — The Prime Minister of Iraq, Mustafa al-Kadhimi urged prominent Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr to ask protesters to withdraw from government institutes in Baghdad after the tense security situation escalated dramatically in the Iraqi capital on Monday (August 29).

Kadhimi said in a statement the current situation in Iraq is perilous and has been caused by ongoing political disputes.

He declared entering Iraqi government institutes is illegal and called on people to withdraw from the Green Zone.

The Iraqi PM also stated the public must respect security forces in order to protect the country and the people.

The United Nations Assistance Mission to Iraq (UNAMI) has also issued a statement calling for protestors to immediately withdraw from the Green Zone, "vacate all governmental buildings and to allow the government to continue its responsibilities of running the State.”

Video.. Security forces use live bullets to disperse protesters in Green Zone

8-1661780705.jpg

Today, Monday, a security source said that security forces used live bullets to disperse the demonstrators in the Green Zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad.

This comes in conjunction with the attempts of the anti-riot forces to expel the Sadrist movement's demonstrators from inside the government palace (the second presidency to fall into the hands of the Sadrists after Parliament), using batons, water and tear gas canisters, as well as fire extinguishers (foam).

Earlier today, the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, announced his retirement from political work and the closure of all political, media and social institutions associated with him, and stressed his followers not to use his name or the name of the movement in any political or media activity.

As a result, the sit-in of the Sadrist movement's supporters in the Green Zone turned into storming the Republican Palace in the Green Zone and declaring a general mobilization.
