Published: Updated:

Iraq’s judiciary suspended its activities on Tuesday after supporters of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr stepped up pressure on it to dissolve parliament, as one of the worst political crises since the US-led invasion dragged on.

Al-Sadr has in recent weeks commanded thousands of followers to storm and occupy parliament, preventing the formation of a government nearly 10 months after elections.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, who cut short a trip to Egypt to deal with the crisis, has urged all sides to remain calm and renewed calls for a national dialogue.

Al-Sadr’s followers began gathering for protests outside the headquarters of the Supreme Judicial Council and Federal Supreme Court in Baghdad. The followers have sent threats by phone, the judiciary said in a statement.

“(We) will suspend court sessions as a protest against this unconstitutional behavior and will hold the government and political parties which are backing this move fully responsible for all the results,” the statement added.

Al-Sadr has called for early elections and unspecified changes to the constitution after withdrawing his lawmakers from parliament in June.

His political opponents, mostly fellow Shias backed by Iran, have refused to accede to his demands, raising fears of fresh unrest and violence in a conflict-weary Iraq.

Iraq’s 10-month standoff since the election is the longest stretch without a fully functioning government in the nearly two decades since Saddam Hussein was overthrown in a US-led in 2003.

Al-Sadr was the biggest winner of last year’s election but was unable to form a government along with Kurdish and Sunni Muslim Arab parties, excluding his Iran-backed Shia rivals.

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Judicial Council and the Federal Supreme Court met in person and electronically on Tuesday morning; Following the open sit-in of the Sadrist movement’s demonstrators in front of the Supreme Judicial Council to demand the dissolution of the House of Representatives, by putting pressure on the Federal Supreme Court to issue a decision by the state order to dissolve the House of Representatives.

Al-Sadr’s Minister vows to take a “surprising” move: The horns of power have come, and we have more

Baghdad - people

Saleh Muhammad al-Iraqi, known as "Al-Sadr's Minister," gave the reasons for the sit-in of the Sadrist movement's masses in front of the judiciary building yesterday.

Al-Iraqi said in a statement, a copy of which was received by “People” (August 24, 2022), that “the horns of power have come against the revolution and I will characterize them in another article if they do not patronize, they came when we protested before the Supreme Judicial Council, and the reasons are as follows:

First: For fear that the judiciary will resort to exposing their corruption files.

Second: They thought that the demonstrators would storm the council, and therefore files would fall into their hands that would expose everyone without exception.

Third: The (the framework) considers the judiciary to be the only protector for them.. If the sit-in continues in front of it, they will not have a future and will not be able to form a government.

Fourth: The fall of the current regime does not please some, especially the American Embassy.

Fifth: Perhaps the fall of corruption in the Iraqi judiciary means for them that the revolution may bring down corrupt people like them.

Sixth: They consider the judiciary to be the head, and the fall of the head means the fall of what is below it.

Seventh: What bothered them the most was the demand for the resignation of Faeq Zeidan, who is considered the biggest supporter of the tire.
As for what actually resulted from this sit-in, it is as follows:

First: The revolutionaries have proven their courage and surprise, and this has frightened them. The Almighty said: (So did the people of the villages believe that our misfortune would come upon them while they were asleep).

Second: We removed the international pressures by demanding dialogue with the corrupt, for they declared that they were forced not to.

Third: I think that the judiciary will try to uncover some corruption files in order to stave off another sit-in.

Fourth: Perhaps he will issue arrest warrants against those who demand reform, right or wrong, and not issue that against the other party, and this will reveal great corruption in the judicial institution and the people will be informed of their actions.

Fifth: The exposure of some parties that used to claim moderation, impartiality and independence.

Sixth: The announcement of the suspension of the work of the judiciary was not constitutional, which means that the judiciary is trying to remove suspicions from it in an illegal way, especially since the demonstration was peaceful.

Seventh: It broke the noses of the corrupt, as they could not defend themselves and imitate the actions of the revolution, as they did previously with the call for millions of demonstrations last week.

Eighth: Everyone is unanimously agreed that corruption has affected the judicial institution for twenty years, and most are unanimously agreed on that.. As soon as the (current) took a stand before it, the judiciary became unsurpassed and almost infallible, as well as corruption and unjustice.

Ninth: Whether this step is considered a failure or a success.. it means that we will take another sudden step that they would not have imagined if the people decided to continue the revolution and undermine and anger the corrupt.

A close associate of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, threatened, on Wednesday, to take "another surprising step", hours after ending a sit-in for his supporters in front of the Supreme Judicial Council building in Baghdad.

"Whether this step is considered a failure or a success... it means that we will take another surprising step that they do not think," said "Sadr Minister" Saleh Muhammad al-Iraqi in a Facebook post.

Al-Iraqi criticized the Supreme Judicial Council's move to suspend its work against the backdrop of the sit-in, saying that this procedure was not "constitutional," noting that "the judiciary is trying to remove suspicions from it in an illegal way, especially since the demonstration was peaceful."

Al-Iraqi stressed that critics of the Sadrist sit-in in front of the Supreme Judicial Council fear that "the judiciary will resort to exposing their corruption files."

Al-Iraqi also said that "the (coordinating) framework considers the judiciary to be the only protector for them... and if the sit-in continues in front of it, they will not have a presence in the future and they will not be able to form a government."

On Tuesday, Sadr's supporters staged a sit-in for hours in front of the Supreme Judicial Council building in Baghdad, before they withdrew after al-Sadr urged them to leave, in the face of a stifling political crisis in Iraq.

On Tuesday morning, hundreds of the Sadrist movement's supporters announced, directly in front of the Supreme Judicial Council building, the organization of a sit-in to achieve several demands, most notably the "dissolution of Parliament", in a move that was met with concern and condemning reactions from its opponents and prompted the Supreme Judicial Council to suspend its work during the day before announcing its appeal. Wednesday.

The protesters set up tents in front of the building of the highest judicial authority in the country, amid a heavy security presence. Hours later, al-Sadr advised his supporters to withdraw and at the same time asked them to continue the sit-in in front of Parliament.

Since the October 2021 parliamentary elections, Iraq has been living in a state of political paralysis with the inability to elect a new president and form a new government, in light of continuous political differences.

The level of escalation between the Sadrist movement and its opponents in the coordination framework rose on July 30, when al-Sadr supporters began a sit-in at the Iraqi parliament building in the Green Zone, demanding the dissolution of parliament and early elections. And this sit-in continues since then.

For their part, Sadr's opponents, in the coordination framework that includes the bloc of former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and the Fatah bloc representing the Popular Mobilization, want to form a government before going to early elections.

Supporters of the coordination framework have also been carrying out a sit-in in front of the Green Zone, which includes government institutions and Western diplomatic headquarters, since August 12.

Shafaq News/ The Supreme Judicial Council stressed, on Wednesday, the continuation of taking legal measures against anyone who violates the law and disrupts institutions, in reference to the arrest warrants issued against leaders of the Sadrist movement.

The council said in a statement today, that "in view of the withdrawal of the demonstrators and the lifting of the siege on the building of the Supreme Judicial Council and the Federal Supreme Court, it was decided to resume work normally in all courts as of tomorrow morning, corresponding to 08/24/2022."

The statement expressed its thanks to "the local and international parties and personalities that support the judiciary and are keen on the principle of the rule of law and respect for the constitution."

In its statement, the council also stressed "to proceed with taking legal measures against anyone who violates the law and disrupts public institutions."

Yesterday, Tuesday, the judicial authority in Iraq decided to suspend its work in the country, following a sit-in by supporters of the Sadrist movement in front of the Supreme Judicial Council, demanding the dissolution of the Iraqi parliament.

Yesterday morning, dozens of supporters of the Sadrist movement went to the Supreme Judicial Council and began erecting the sit-in marquee in front of the council building, in a new development of an escalation that affected the judiciary after the legislative authority in light of a stifling political crisis the country is going through.

Yesterday, the Council issued arrest warrants against three leaders of the Sadrist movement against the background of the developments of events, they are: Sabah Al-Saadi, Muhammad Al-Saadi, and Ghayeb Al-Amiri.

This is the first time that the council building located in the fortified Green Zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad, witnessed protests because of its tight protection, but the followers of the prominent Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr have the ability to invade any official institution because they have a wide popular base in the regions of central and southern Iraq Supported by the "Saraya al-Salam", the military wing of the movement.

The protesters carried slogans calling for the implementation of the call of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, to dissolve the Iraqi parliament, in preparation for holding early legislative elections in Iraq.

The demands made by the protesters before the Judicial Council, in addition to the dissolution of Parliament, included "identifying the largest bloc, fighting corruption and the corrupt, separating the Public Prosecution from the Supreme Judicial Council with the amendment, and not politicizing the judiciary."

On the tenth of August, the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, asked the judicial authorities to work on dissolving the Iraqi parliament within a maximum period of the end of next week, urging at the same time the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih, to set a date for early legislative elections in the country. .

The Judicial Council had confirmed on several occasions and another in an official statement in which he responded to al-Sadr, that he "does not have the authority to dissolve the House of Representatives," calling on "all political and media parties not to involve the judiciary in political rivalries and competitions."

The political scene in Iraq has been going through a dangerous turn since supporters of the Sadrist movement led by prominent Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr stormed the parliament building in the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, and staged a sit-in in protest against Al-Sudani's nomination for the position of head of the next federal government.

Shafaq News/ Mabat, known as the "minister" of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, criticized today, Wednesday, what he described as "trumpets of power" for attacking the sit-in in front of the Supreme Judicial Council in Baghdad yesterday, while he outlined 9 issues that resulted from the sit-in.

Saleh Muhammad al-Iraqi said, in a statement issued today, that "the trumpets of power have risen against the revolution," vowing, "I will characterize them in another article if they do not patronize."

He added that those "trumpets" came when we protested in front of the Supreme Judicial Council, summarizing the reasons for "fearing that the judiciary will resort to exposing their corruption files, and they thought that the demonstrators would storm the council and therefore files would fall into their hands that expose everyone without exception."

The "minister" also said that "(the framework) considers the judiciary the only protector for them... and if the sit-in continues in front of it, they will not have a presence in the future and they will not be able to form a government," pointing out that "the fall of the current regime does not please some, especially the American embassy." .

He also suggested that "the fall of corruption in the Iraqi judiciary means to them that the revolution may topple corrupt people like them," adding, "They consider the judiciary to be the head, and the fall of the head means the fall of what is below it."

He pointed out that "what bothered them the most was the demand for the resignation of Faek Zeidan, who is considered the biggest supporter (of the framework)," as he put it.

As for what resulted from this sit-in, it was for nine points.

First: The revolutionaries proved their courage and surprise, and this terrified them. The Almighty said: (So did the people of the towns believe that Our misfortune would come upon them while they were asleep?)

Sixth: The announcement of the suspension of the judiciary's work was not constitutional, which means that the judiciary is trying to remove suspicions from it in an illegal way, especially since the demonstration was peaceful.

As soon as the (current) took a stand before it, the judiciary became second to none and was almost infallible, as well as corruption and unjustice.

Ninth: Whether this step is considered a failure or a success.. it means that we will take another sudden step that they would not have thought of if the people decided to continue the revolution and undermine and anger the corrupt.

Al-Sadr concluded his statement by saying, "We have more."

Shafaq News/ Today, Wednesday, the Supreme Judicial Council denied the request of a group of judges to file a lawsuit before international courts regarding the chest sit-ins.

The council said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, "The Supreme Judicial Council makes it clear that judges and members of the public prosecution who continue to serve in particular, are committed to the obligations and duties imposed on them by the Judicial Organization Law, including not to act with individual judgment in cases that concern public opinion."

The statement added, "This is why the Supreme Judicial Council denies the publication containing the claim of the group of judges of the complaint before the international courts regarding the events of August 23, 2022, especially since the Iraqi judiciary is the competent and able to address any issue in accordance with the Iraqi laws in force."

And news spread about the attempt of a group of Iraqi judges to file an international complaint with the International Tribunal after what they considered a chest threat to the judiciary, as a result of the sit-ins in front of the council’s headquarters, and the demand for the armed wing of the Sadrist movement, represented by Saraya al-Salam, to be placed on the list of global terrorism.
