Under the High Patronage of Mr. Emmanuel MACRON President of the French Republic

THE INTERNATIONAL ARAB BANKING SUMMIT IABS 2018 “Mediterranean Banking Dialogue”

June 28-29, 2018 Paris – France The Peninsula Hotel – Paris

INTRODUCTION

The Union of Arab Banks will host its annual International Arab Banking Summit (IABS) for 2018 in Paris-France on June 28-29, 2018. The Summit, which is an annual international platform, gathers Ministers, Governors of Central Banks, leading bankers, decision-makers and representatives of public and private sectors from numerous global nations to discuss issues of concern to the international banking community and the wider global economy.

THEME

IABS 2018 – Paris will present assessments on Arab, European and Mediterranean banking relations, and what is necessary for public-private initiatives to strengthen these relations and open channels of cooperation, trade, and bilateral investments.

Recent global incidents hindered cooperative and bilateral investment opportunities, creating tensions between regional neighbours, and leaving Arab-EU-Mediterranean businesses and banking relations in need of a confidence boost.

In an effort to foster such relations, there is a need to invest in human capital by educating future generations on the necessity of mutual economic relations. The economy and environment are also common elements which should be at the forefront of discussions and key decisions taken at leader meetings.

Today, global economic activities may have participated in exacerbating climate change, and exerting extraordinary pressures on our planet’s well-being. Moreover, natural resources are gradually depleting. The remaining biodiversity, freshwater, atmosphere, coral reefs, oceans, forests and ice sheets play a direct role in ensuring the sustainability of nature and thereby, the economy. The belief that solving environmental problems can only be achieved by building economic wealth must be abandoned if there is serious concern about economic development for a thriving civilization.

Perhaps the most imperative factor for regional and cross-border relations to flourish is security. Over the past few years, the Mediterranean region has experienced fluctuating periods of tension, crises, and violence. From drawn-out wars, to threat of extremism and terrorism, to humanitarian and refugee crises, the region has gradually become the epicentre of the most dramatic policy challenges confronting the EU/Mediterranean and Arab countries. If left unresolved, these challenges will have far-reaching consequences.

OBJECTIVE OF THE SUMMIT

The objective of the IABS 2018 is to facilitate discussions among banking and financial leaders in addition to government and public sector officials. Topics of discussion will focus on Mediterranean banking relations, regional security, education, and environment, in addition to opening up areas of fruitful cooperation to boost financing for medium and large enterprises, including those operating in the gas, oil, and water sectors.

THEME TOPICS

The Paris Summit aims at presenting:

- Mediterranean Dialogue: EU-Arab Strategies for enhancing banking, bilateral trade, and investment relationships
- Financing Medium and Large Enterprises through Public-Private financing mechanisms (long-term investments in gas, oil and water facilities)
- Education and Combating Illiteracy: Investing in Human Capital
- Security matters in the Mediterranean Region
- Global Regulatory Framework for Correspondent Banking Relationships
- FinTech and RegTech: Opportunities and Challenges

- Working papers presented by senior government and banking officials, and leading economic and financial experts from the region and the international community

- Panel discussions moderated by senior bankers and businessmen, allowing for informative and valuable sessions

- An exhibition for sponsoring institutions, whereby participating institutions can showcase their products and services while establishing and developing business ties
