The Vishkhabur region is particularly strategic for the Kurds

BAGHDAD - Iraqi forces on Friday granted Kurdish forces "hours" to withdraw from a border area with Turkey through which an oil pipeline was seized by the region after 2014, a security official said.

"The Kurdish forces gave us hours to withdraw from their positions in the Vishkhabur area," an Iraqi security official said. He added that "the fire is currently suspended, but there are bursts from time to time."

Heavy gun battles raged Thursday between Iraqi Kurdish and Iraqi forces heading for the Fishkhabur crossing to secure the pipeline to the Turkish port of Ceyhan.

Located on the top of a triangle between the Turkish, Iraqi and Syrian territories, Vishkabur is considered especially strategic for the Kurds.

The Kurdish Peshmerga forces controlled the oil pipeline from Kirkuk province through Mosul in the northern province of Nineveh, following the chaos that followed the massive attack on the Islamic state three years ago.

At the end of 2013, the Kurdish authorities extended a parallel line to the meeting point in the region of Vishkhabur through Erbil and Dohuk, under which the pipeline from Kirkuk was cut since the 1980s.

The new pipeline was linked to the Iraqi pipeline through which all Iraqi oil exports pass through the Turkish port of Ceyhan.

The Iraqi official said that "separatist Kurdish factions have been fighting in defense of the area north of Zammar and Rabia, near the fields of Rumailan and Karachuk oil in Syria."

The official pointed out that through this region is "the purchase of Syrian oil from elements of the PKK and the Kurdish People's Protection Units, because there is no outlet for the smuggling of oil to Turkey from Syria."

According to the same official, Syrian Kurds "sell oil through trucks passing through the village of Mahmudiya (Iraqiya), whose residents have not been allowed to return to it since the Peshmerga entered the area."

The Baghdad government has taken a series of punitive measures against Erbil after its referendum on independence from Baghdad, including the closure of airspace on airports in the region.

Although Iraqi forces have restored all oil fields in the oil-rich province of Kirkuk and disputed areas with Erbil in the northern provinces after being recovered from the Peshmerga, they are unable to export oil through the northern pipelines because of damage caused by military operations against the jihadists, Of the Kurdistan authority.

Tensions between Baghdad and Erbil rose a month ago when the region organized a referendum on independence, with the result "yes" overwhelmingly.

On Wednesday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) launched a referendum on freezing the results of the referendum after the loss it suffered on the ground and domestic and international political pressures.

Baghdad is determined to impose power

However, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi rejected this proposal, saying "we accept only the abolition of the referendum and adherence to the Constitution."

He said during a telephone call from US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson late on Thursday, according to a statement by the Iraqi government.

He added that "the government is determined to implement the law and the Constitution in all regions," adding that "the northern province of the obligation to hand over border crossings and airports to the federal authority."

He pointed out that "the redeployment and the imposition of federal authority legal and constitutional action and we are keen on the security of citizens in those areas."

For his part, Tillerson, "the position of his country supporting the unity of Iraq and understanding of the imposition of federal authority in the province of Kirkuk and other areas."

The Secretary of State of America to "the importance of cooperation of the region with the federal authority and emphasis on dialogue within the framework of the Iraqi constitution."

Kurdistan referendum ... imposes new US policy in Iraq

  •

The international press today dealt with various issues, the most important of which is the crisis between Baghdad and Erbil and what is happening in Syria in addition to the US sanctions against Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah. As well as the crisis between Madrid and Barcelona and the re-election of the presidential elections in Kenya.

The newspaper "Arabs" and an article by the writer Kafi Ali, talking about the defeat of the Kurdish conscience.

The writer wonders whether it is permissible to exploit the national conscience of the Kurdish people for independence by a referendum that has been rejected regionally and internationally. Was it an adventure that paved the way for the Kurdish state, or a gamble that Massoud Barzani needed to silence Kurdish voices rejecting his policy and demanding his resignation? Regardless of everything, the results of the referendum have imposed new US policy in Iraq after the victory over the organization of the Islamic state ... says the writer.

The newspaper "Arabs" also wondered in another article by the writer Farouk Yusuf Barzani's resignation.

In his resignation as president of the Kurdistan region of Iraq, he says, he will enter history as the first politician to step down because of his failure to run his job and manage the affairs of his citizens in the Arab world.

This is a historic precedent. Barzani will be a political figure who believes in democracy and will liberate the Kurds from the historical leader's complex forever. Which could make a great shift for the peoples of the region to understand their relationship with their rulers ... adds the article.

The newspaper "Al-Quds Al-Arabi" touched on its part to what is going on between Baghdad and Erbil revealing the split of Kurdish soldiers from the Iraqi army and their flight to Kurdistan.

The newspaper said that a military source revealed that "the soldiers refused to obey orders leading to progress towards areas controlled by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, and said they would not fight and left their weapons without permission of the military reference."

As for what is happening in Syria, the "New Arab" highlighted the battles in Deir al-Zour and its villages and wrote by Adnan Ali that the tripartite battles continue in this region between elements of the Islamic state organization on the one hand, and the Syrian regime forces and its militias and Syrian forces On the other hand, amid many indications of weighting in favor of the Syrian forces supported by the United States, which took control of the fighting or agreements under the table with the organization of the Islamic state, the areas larger than the regime forces, especially at the level of oil fields.

Al- Hayat newspaper dealt with US sanctions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and Lebanese Hezbollah. According to the writer Walid Choucair, these sanctions add, under the pretext of violating the ballistic missile program to Tehran and its role in destabilizing the regional, a new element in the international confrontation with the rule of the mandate of the jurist and external expansion, but most likely will not make the Revolutionary Guard to continue its strategy in the region.

On Catalonia, whose president has announced that he will not call early elections in the region because of insufficient guarantees from the Spanish government, the Le Figaro newspaper reported that the Catalan president's position was not in Catalonia's favor because regional elections were the best option that could be avoided by losing self-government and trusteeship.

The Catalan newspaper Lafengardia talks about the crisis between Madrid and Barcelona in an article entitled "A country heading to the abyss"

The Catalans are living today for fear of what might happen, especially if the Spanish authorities use the article "One hundred and fifty-five" to deprive the region of autonomy, the newspaper writes, adding that the policy of the arm between the parties to the conflict not only threaten the future of Catalonia, but Spain as a whole. From Spain to Kenya, which yesterday re-held the presidential elections boycotted by the opposition and witnessed clashes that killed and wounded.

France's Liberation newspaper quoted scenes of violence in the country, which many voters did not accept, and wrote that the opposition was overturning the election despite all indications that Ahoro Kenyatta might win a new term.

The Kenyan newspaper The Standard says that within three months since the first round of presidential elections last August, an unprecedented political crisis has been brewing.

The crisis facing Kenya, which was not resolved by a second round of elections, was expressed by the paper using Nelson Mandela's famous saying: "After climbing a large hill you find that there are many other hills to rise."

On Rex Tillerson: If you wanted to find a more qualified man to understand the Kurdistan dispute over oil, how to negotiate and deal with the key players, and you wanted that man to represent the United States as Secretary of State, and if you were to search the entire globe over, and scour it carefully, you could not find a better suited and more qualified man, to do so. Rex Tillerson is the All State of oil negotiations. Remember the add from years ago? A pair of strong and capable hands, cupping together in an insurance ad? You are in good hands, with All State?.......well, You are in good hands, with Tillerson.
