Haider al-Abadi has not yet announced his candidacy for a new period

BAGHDAD - Iraq plans to hold parliamentary elections on May 15 to choose a prime minister, a statement from the prime minister's office said.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has yet to say whether he intends to seek the premiership for a new term. Most of the executive powers are in the hands of the prime minister, who also serves as commander of the armed forces.

On Tuesday, the Iraqi government endorsed the proposal of the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq (IHEC) to set May 15 as the date for the general parliamentary elections in Iraq.

"It was voted on that the parliamentary elections will be held on May 15, 2018, and the federal government will provide the safe environment for the elections and the return of the displaced to their areas and the voting will be electronic," she said in her weekly session.

The Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq has recently proposed to set the fifteenth of May next year as the date for the parliamentary elections in Iraq.

The House of Representatives has to approve the election date, which was approved at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Abadi was prime minister, replacing Nuri al-Maliki, a close ally of Iran, who was blamed for the collapse of the army against Islamic state fighters during his invasion of a third of Iraq's territory in 2014.

Al-Fadl is credited with rebuilding the army and defeating the organization in the city of Mosul, its main stronghold in Iraq, last July with the help of a US-led coalition.

Maliki holds the post of vice president, a ceremonial post, and is still a figure of influence in the political arena through his presidency of the Shiite Dawa Party, the largest parliamentary bloc.

Under a power-sharing system established after the invasion of Iraq and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003, the post of prime minister is reserved for the majority Shi'ites.

The post of honorary president is reserved for a Kurdish member of Parliament while the speaker of the House of Representatives is elected from the Sunni Arabs.
