IRBIL, Iraq — Iraqi forces opened a new front Thursday in their offensive to retake Mosul, advancing from the northwest in a bid to add momentum to the grueling seven-month-long battle for the city. 

Troops from the army’s 9th Division and elite forces from the Interior Ministry spearheaded the early morning attack, according to the Iraqi military. 

Islamic State militants are still holding on in a few neighborhoods of western Mosul, after losing control of the east. But the Iraqi offensive, which is backed by airstrikes and military support from a U.S.-led coalition, had slowed in recent weeks. Interior Ministry forces have ground to a halt on the southern edge of Mosul’s Old City, whose narrow streets and winding alleys are inaccessible to armored vehicles.

Given that challenging geography, Iraqi commanders have said they now plan to lay siege to the Old City by attacking from the northwest. But the district remains home to hundreds of thousands of civilians, raising concerns for their welfare as the battle closes in, and food and drinking water become increasingly scarce.  

“The Old City will be isolated and the last target,” said Lt. Gen. Sami al-Aridhi, a counterterrorism forces commander. He said authorities are considering dropping humanitarian aid to families trapped in areas held by the Islamic State. 

Nearly half a million people have been displaced since the battle for Mosul began in October, according to the United Nations. Some have fled to relatives in the city’s east, which is now under the control of Iraqi security forces.

Others have had no choice but to stay in poorly supplied camps south of the city. Aid groups say they expect a new flow of displaced families as Iraqi forces push from the north.

After a grinding fight, during which Iraqi forces have suffered heavy casualties, commanders are eager to wrap up the battle before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which will begin late this month. With many soldiers fasting during the day, the offensive may slow if fighting is still underway when it begins.

The Islamic State’s capability “continues to wane,” said Maj. Gen. Joseph Martin, commander of ground forces for the U.S.-led coalition. The security forces have made “undeniable progress,” he added.

Iraqi officers say that since a strike on a building in Mosul’s al-Jadida neighborhood in March that allegedly killed more than 100 civilians, they have been under orders to request U.S.-led coalition airstrikes only when absolutely necessary. The United States is investigating the incident.

Chief of Staff of the Iraqi army Gen. Osman al-Ghanemi said on Saturday Mosul will be declared completely ISIS-free within few days.

The armed forces will declare the full control over the city, and the killing of all terrorists there, he added.

Iraqi joint forces fought fiercely, showing that its capabilities are on par with the world's top armies, Ghanemi stated.

The Iraqi forces managed to attain victory in surgical operations that will be taught at military academies in the future, he went on to say.

The Iraqi forces, of all its branches, killed over 6,000 terrorists and evacuated over half a million civilians from the war-ravaged areas.

On his part, General Abdul Karim Khalaf, adviser of Arab European Counterterrorism Center said Mosul Battle is actually finished, and the remnants of ISIS terrorists are deemed to be dead.

The fighters of the Iraqi army showed great ability to control and maintain ground, he added.

The Iraqi forces are pushing on ISIS in the right bank of Mosul since February 19th with the aid of the US-led coalition.

Most of the city are now ISIS-free, with dozens of the terror group's operatives are being killed on a daily basis.

Iraq, May 6, 2017 The constant liberation of territories in Mosul has positively impacted the investments in the Kurdistan Region, said an official. “There has been progress in the markets of Kurdistan Region as well as its domestic and foreign investment, and these are all connected to the liberation of [the majority] of Mosul from Daesh [IS],” said Yasin Mahmoud, a spokesperson for the Board of Investment. He noted that foreign investors had suspended their projects due to the security crisis caused by IS' presence in northern Iraq, and now they are resuming their work as the group is nearing its end. “Nearly $30 billion was allocated to reconstruct Mosul [after the complete defeat of IS], which is expected to benefit the Kurdistan Region’s economy,” Mahmoud stated. The 6 May article posted by Yota ( above your post ), states Liberation within a few days; just an observation and not taking a dig here - just a few days ago they said it would be " a few more days ."

I suspect they want to be extremely careful with calling for Full Liberation, so we might see perhaps 1 or 2 more articles stating  

" within a Few Days " so they don't have " egg on their face " - so as not to have to walk it back in embarrassment.

The Ministry of Defense announced that it will control the entire Mosul before the month of Ramadan. 
This announcement was made by Chief of General Staff of the Iraqi Army team 's first corner Othman Ghanimi while inspecting operations are coming, Nineveh against al Daesh in the right side of the city of Mosul.

With the earlier estimate of less than 1,000 ISIS militants remaining in West Mosul then 200 to 300 ISIS militants remaning in West Mosul with after those announcements exterminating about 50 here, a dozen here and there, and a few here/a few there, then there is likely less that 100 (maybe much less) remaining ISIS militants in West Mosul. With munitions and explosive supplies crimped or terminated, the remaining ISIS can likely soon only put up hand to hand resistance or throw/drop things like debris. I suspect the Iraqi Forces advances will pick up speed and then maybe slow a little once Old Mosul is reached. With extremely pared ISIS militants and attacks on all Old Mosul fronts, the retaking of Old Mosul could as well happen very quickly!
