The Middle East conflict sends shock waves through global markets

The Middle East conflict sends shock waves through global markets
2023-10-15 03:21

Shafaq News/ Economic experts and analysts expect that global markets will witness more ripple effects from the conflict in the Middle East, and they are monitoring the situation to see if the conflict will attract other countries that can raise oil prices, which will push the flow of capital to safe assets.

Israel continues to prepare for a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, which is run by the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), after asking the residents of Gaza City to evacuate and head south. At the same time, the Israeli National Security Advisor warned the Lebanese Hezbollah group against igniting a war on a second front.

“It appears we are headed toward a large-scale ground invasion of Gaza and significant loss of life,” said Ben Cahill, senior research fellow in the Energy Security and Climate Change Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “Any time a conflict of this magnitude erupts, there will be a market reaction.”

Over the past week, the impact of fears related to the conflict appeared in asset prices, which contributed to the decline in stocks on Friday, and the US Standard & Poor’s index fell by 0.5 percent. As for safe haven assets, they witnessed buying waves, as gold rose more than three percent on Friday, and the US dollar touched its highest level in the past week. week.

Oil prices jumped about six percent on Friday as investors anticipated the impact of the conflict on supplies from neighboring countries in the world's largest oil-producing region.

“If it turns out that the conflict is expanding, oil prices will rise even more,” said Michael Englund, chief economist at Action Economics in Colorado.

Bernard Baumol, chief international economist at the Economic Outlook Group in Princeton, New Jersey, suggested that the expansion of the conflict would also cause inflation to rise and thus accelerate the pace of interest rate hikes around the world.

But he pointed out that the United States may be the exception to this scenario because foreign investors will pump their capital into what they consider a safe haven during global conflicts.

He said about what might happen in the United States, “Interest rates may fall... and we expect the dollar to rise.”

Other types of fuel may also be affected. For example, in light of the latest developments, Chevron announced the cessation of natural gas exports through a major pipeline that passes under the sea between Israel and Egypt.

“The biggest risk to the oil market is that this conflict attracts neighboring countries,” said Cahill of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Analysts ruled out that the rise in oil prices would have a significant impact on gas prices in the United States or consumer spending.

“Consumers are unlikely to feel a significant impact on gas prices any time soon,” Englund said.

Iran threatens "military intervention" against Israel within the ongoing conflict in Palestine

Baghdad today - follow-up

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian announced today, Sunday (October 15, 2023), informing the Zionist entity through its supporters that if its crimes in Gaza do not stop, tomorrow will be too late, while he indicated that if stopping the aggression against Gaza does not succeed, the war fronts will expand. It is not excluded and its probability increases every hour.

Al-Lahiyan stated in press statements followed by “Baghdad Today” that “we hope that political efforts will prevent the war from expanding, otherwise no one knows what will happen in the next hour, and Iran cannot remain a spectator regarding this situation.”

He added, "During my meeting in Lebanon, I learned from Hassan Nasrallah that all scenarios were put on the table, and if America and Israel do not stop this policy, the scope of the war cannot be stopped."

The Iranian minister continued, "For the resistance, the issue of prisoners in Gaza is a red line, but it is studying the issue of civilian prisoners," pointing out that "the continuation of the aggression and the absence of a political solution add fuel to the fire and things may get out of control."

He added, "The region and its actors will not remain spectators. Hezbollah has identified all stages of the red lines and will take appropriate measures at every stage. I say to the Zionists, if you want war, fight the military, not the women and children."

It will most likely become a nuclear conflict. And that could well trigger Armageddon.

The Iranian people are not all bad. There were protests in Tehran after the Hamas terrorist action; protests against Hamas. I do believe if the Islamists in control of Iran (or any other government in the region) join in the attack against Israel, they will be met by the IDF with massive retaliation. I don't see Jordan, Egypt or Saudi Arabia piling on, but Syria, Turkey and Iran just might. As others have opined here, I can't believe Iraq has the ability to back up the threats made by the various voices like Maliki.

Absolutely agree with you. Under the last regime, the People of Iran were known for their kindness. But then the terrorists took over under the pathetic leadership of Jimmy Carter.

Sadly in this kind of situation we have today MANY innocent people who are going to lose their lives. It's the natural course of war.

Only God will stop that. And I believe wholeheartedly that is going to be imminent.
