yota691
Leaders of the Davos Forum point out four crises in the world and the threat of global recession 2022-05-23 11:46 Shafaq News/ The multiple threats to the global economy topped the concerns of the world's wealthy at the annual Davos Thinking Forum, on Monday, as some pointed to the risk of a global recession, while others warned of four crises the world is experiencing. Political and business leaders are meeting at the World Economic Forum (WEF) against the backdrop of inflation at its highest level in a generation in major economies including the United States, Britain and Europe, meanwhile, the fallout on oil and food markets from the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February - What Moscow describes as a "special military operation" - and the COVID-19 lockdowns in China without a clear end are exacerbating the gloom. "We have at least four overlapping crises, we have high inflation, we have an energy crisis, we have food poverty, we have a climate crisis. We can't solve problems if we focus on just one of them," German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck said. "But if none of the problems are resolved, I really fear that we are facing a global recession that has a tremendous impact on global stability," Habek added during a panel discussion of the World Economic Forum, which was seen by Shafak News. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) last month lowered its global growth forecast for the second time this year, citing the war in Ukraine and singled out inflation as a "clear and present risk" for many countries. For her part, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned that "growth and inflation are on opposite paths, with rising price pressures dampening economic activity and destroying household purchasing power." However, Lagarde promised "to raise interest rates in July and September to curb inflation, even if higher borrowing costs will affect growth." According to press reports, “The economic burden caused by the Ukraine crisis is being felt strongly in Europe, but it is the US economy that suffers from the greatest price pressures, as the Consumer Price Index jumped from nearly zero two years ago to a 40-year high of 8.5% in March, while the Federal Reserve responded earlier this month with the largest interest rate increase in 22 years. President Jerome Powell also noted "increases of the same size - half a percentage point - in at least his next two meetings," noting that "higher rates and expectations for more have not yet weakened consumer spending and the labor market in the United States." “We don’t see that happening in our business yet,” said Anthony Capuano, CEO of Marriott International during his participation in the summit, adding: “There is still pent-up demand and major emerging markets, including China, are still expected to see growth this year.” Even if it was at a slower pace than previously expected. “His bank continues to expect strong growth this year in China, India and Brazil,” said Marcos Trujo, president of the New Development Bank set up by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The Davos Forum is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, and this forum is a space for elites from 1000 representatives of major multinational companies such as Nestle, Nikki, Microsoft, Bechtel, and political leaders to discuss the economic and political problems facing the world and how to solve them. Its annual meetings are in Davos, "the capital of Microsoft", where joint economic plans and projects are being drafted.
yota691
Zelensky tells Davos: send us weapons, stop Russia trade MAY 24, 2022 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky used the Davos summit Monday to appeal for more weapons and “maximum” sanctions against Russia, lamenting that tens of thousands of lives would have been saved had countries acted faster. Appearing by video-link, Zelensky delivered the headline speech to the first World Economic Forum to be held in the Swiss Alps in more than two years after the Covid pandemic derailed the event. The conflict shows “that support to the country under attack is more valuable the sooner it is provided: weapons, funding, political support and sanctions against Russia,” said Zelensky, who received a standing ovation. Flanked by Ukrainian flags and wearing an olive-green T-shirt, he said through an interpreter that if Kyiv had received “100 percent of our needs at once back in February, the result would have been tens of thousands of lives saved”. “This is why Ukraine needs all the weapons that we ask for, not just the ones that have been provided,” he said, adding that 87 people were killed in a May 17 strike by Russia on a military base in northern Ukraine. Anastasia Radina, a Ukrainian lawmaker, told AFP that her country needs “NATO-style” weapons, including tanks and ground-based air defence systems. “What we are looking for most importantly are fighter jets and this has been the most difficult discussion,” she said. “Three months into the war, and tens of thousands lives lost, we are still at the point of discussing if we need fighter jets. Frankly speaking this is outrageous.” Ukraine is receiving howitzers “but that is not yet enough”, she said. Zelensky called for an oil embargo on Russia, punitive measures against all its banks and the shunning of its IT sector, adding that all foreign companies should leave the country. “There should not be any trade with Russia,” he told the gathering. “I believe there are still no such sanctions against Russia — and there should be.” WEF founder Klaus Schwab praised Zelensky for his “courageous leadership” and said Davos participants were eager to hear how they could assist Ukraine “because everybody is affected by what’s happening in your country”. Western powers have imposed a slew of sanctions on Russia. But while the United States, Britain and Canada have moved to ban Russian oil and gas, the European Union has been divided over imposing similar measures. The war is dominating the four-day meeting of the world’s business and political elites, with Ukraine sending a strong contingent of officials, including the foreign minister, to plead for more aid. Russian business and political leaders, who used to participate in debates and mingle with other A-listers at champagne parties, were excluded from this year’s gathering. The Ukrainians have transformed the “Russia House” in Davos — normally used by the Russian delegation — into the “Russia War Crimes House” to promote their cause. More than 50 heads of state or government are among the 2,500 delegates at the WEF under the title “History at a Turning Point”. When the WEF last took place in Davos in January 2020, the coronavirus was just brewing in China before morphing into a devastating pandemic. A Davos forum took place virtually last year, with Russian President Vladimir Putin among the speakers. While the summit is back, it lacks its usual snowy backdrop after the Omicron variant forced this year’s January meeting to be postponed until now. Instead, rain is forecast all week. 6ly410
SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said on Tuesday (May 25) that the Iraqi Supreme Court ruling against KRG's oil sales is unconstitutional and political, and the KRG will not implement it. At the 2022 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Barzani said that the KRG had rejected the court's ruling because "we think this is a political ruling and not a constitutional ruling made by a so-called legal institution," according to Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) media outlets. He also said that the KRG would go by Iraq's constitution but also demand the KRG's rights are respected according to the constitution. In February, the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court issued a verdict against the KRG's law on oil contracts, which ruled the contracts were against the constitution. The Judicial Council of the KRG said on May 17 that all of the KRG's oil contracts meet the guidelines of the Iraqi constitution enacted in 2005. yota691
Davos leaders: Food crisis could lead to trade war 2022-05-25 02:04 Shafaq News/ Business leaders and policy makers at the World Economic Forum "Davos" said that the global food crisis has precipitated protection steps by countries that are likely to further exacerbate the problem and may lead to a wider trade war. In a sign of mounting pressure on food supplies and rising prices, India has restricted sugar exports for the first time in six years to prevent domestic prices from rising. Meanwhile, Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil exporter, will eliminate subsidies on bulk cooking oil and replace it with a price cap on raw materials for local refineries. For residents of sub-Saharan Africa, for example, 40% of their consumption is spent on food, said Gita Gopinath, chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. In addition to the "big hit to the cost of living", rising prices have led to increased hoarding by governments. She added, "We have more than 20 countries that have imposed restrictions on exports of foodstuffs and fertilizers, and this will only exacerbate the problem and make matters worse." The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow describes as a "special military operation", led to a sudden crisis in a crisis that was already imminent. “Before Ukraine we were facing an extraordinary food crisis,” said David Beasley, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme. “Food costs, commodity prices, and shipping costs were already doubling, tripling and quadrupling.” He added that the number of people "walking towards starvation" had risen from 80 million to 276 million over the past four or five years. "Keeping the ports closed with the harvest season now approaching in Ukraine in July and August means declaring war on global food supplies," he noted.
