One of the top Iraqi commanders in the Mosul area announced on Thursday that the offensive to reconquer the eastern bank of the Tigris in Mosul had entered a new phase.

Elite Iraqi forces have battled their way into the city mostly from the eastern side, going house-to-house in densely-populated areas but they barely control half of the city's eastern sector more than 10 weeks into the offensive.

Air support by the US-led coalition has been hampered by the continued presence of hundreds of thousands of civilians inside Mosul.

"We're doing everything we can. This is something we're spending a lot of time on," spokesman Peter Cook told CNN.

The Pentagon said Friday Baghdadi and was still alive and leading the organisation and stressed that the coalition was actively hunting down the Iraqi-born jihadist supremo.

The jihadists are vastly outnumbered in Mosul but they have had more than two years to build up their defences in the city where Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed a "caliphate" in June 2014.

This week he told a televised news conference that Iraqi forces would now require at least another three months.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had vowed earlier in 2016 that his forces would rid the country of IS by the end of the year but the Mosul operation has been slower moving that expected.

A year on, the IS jihadist group appears to be on its last legs and is defending its last bastions in Iraq but the going has been tough for the tens of thousands of Iraqi forces on the ground.

Last year revellers turned out for celebrations that lasted most of the night despite an already tense security backdrop.

Huge crowds were expected to gather on Saturday evening in Baghdad's streets to celebrate the New Year for only the second time since the lifting in 2015 of a years-old curfew.

- Mosul slog -

IS has tried to hit back with major diversionary attacks across the country but has had little success in Baghdad. Saturday's twin bombings were the deadliest in the capital since the start of the Mosul offensive.

Baghdad has been on high alert since the start on October 17 of an offensive, Iraq's largest military operation in years, to retake the northern jihadist stronghold of Mosul.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group via its propaganda agency Amaq, which reported the "martyrdom operation" in Al-Sinek neighborhood.

The area is packed with shops, workshops and wholesale markets and usually teeming with delivery trucks and labourers unloading vans or wheeling carts around.

"Twin terrorist attacks were carried out by suicide bombers in Al-Sinek neighborhood," an official from Baghdad operations command told AFP.

Torn clothes and mangled iron were strewn across the ground in pools of blood at the site of the wreckage near Rasheed street, one of the main thoroughfares in Baghdad, an AFP photographer said.

"Many of the victims were people from the spare parts shops in the area, they were gathered near a cart selling breakfast when the explosions went off," said Ibrahim Mohammed Ali, who owns a nearby shop.

Two suicide bombers attacked the Al-Sinek area, killing at least 27 people and wounding 53, a police colonel said. An officer in the interior ministry and a hospital official confirmed the toll.

Baghdad (AFP) - Twin blasts ripped through a busy market area in central Baghdad Saturday, police said, shattering a relative lull in attacks in the capital and marring preparations for New Year celebrations.

***/// It won't -- Not as long as ho'bummer continues his devious mission for his masters in the region.

The TERROR ARMY he and his masters have bought, built and are paying for to destabilize the region to make it

ripe for their picking will continue until we take out the heads of that evil globalist snake.

They've empowered Iran with the nukes to ready them for the take-over for them,  Ho'bummer built that.

They've spread their terror army all over the world to weaken us in our abilities & resolve to protect Iraq and Israel.

They want the entire M.E. region and are on a roll for it.

Once we get their terrorist armies under control, the big booms begin...

Iran wants their promised piece of Iraq.... and Israel.

Seems like just another day in the middle east. Crazy how we have become so accustomed to these articles of weekly, if not daily bombings of civilians. And i am still amazed that we have not seen this type of regular carnage here in the States. Although we have much better security forces here it would be impossible to stop lone wolf attacks. They do not need to be planned well or even well coordinated to succeed. Running people through metal detectors may give the perception of being safe but it sure does not help those  standing in line to get into an event.  Everyone should always be cautious and aware of their surroundings.  Don't live in fear of the enemy but know your enemy!

The aftermath of a car bomb blast in Baghdad. File Photo.

(IraqiNews.com) A car bomb blast that killed and wounded several civilians in eastern Baghdad on Sunday was carried out by a suicide bomber, police said.

The explosion, which hit a marketplace in Jamila, at the eastern, mainly Shia city of al-Sadr, occurred when a policeman shot at a suspected booby-trapped vehicle driven by a suicider, Saad Maan, spokesperson of the Interior Ministry’s Baghdad Operations, said in a statement.

While Maan put casualties from the attack at 6 deaths and 10 injuries, Reuters reported 12 deaths and 50 injuries.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but Islamic State militants have claimed several bombings over the past weeks that left dozens dead.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said recently that violence in Iraq had left 19000 casualties in 2016, but said the count excludes deaths in Anbar during three months of that year.

Observers believe Islamic State have begun to escalate attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure on that front by government forces, and to divert attention from losses.
