Iraq army starts operation to recapture Mosul from ISIL

The Iraqi military on Thursday said it started the operation to recapture the northern city of Mosul from the Islamic State.

Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, was captured by the Islamic State, also known as ISIL or ISIS, in June 2014.

A military statement read on state TV Thursday said: "The first phase of the Fatah (Conquest) Operation has been launched at dawn to liberate Nineveh (in Mosul), raising the Iraqi flag in several villages."

Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool, a spokesman for Iraq’s Joint Military Command, said soldiers retook several villages on the outskirts of the town of Makhmour, east of Mosul, on Thursday morning, the Associated Press reported.

 

 

He said the U.S.-led coalition against ISIL was providing air support.

ISIL has taken over vast swaths of Iraq and neighboring Syria. Mosul, with a population of around 2 million, is the largest city in ISIL’s self-declared caliphate, or Islamic state.

Wasn't there a hearing on Capital Hill the other day where a Marine Corps General said that he doesn't foresee the retaking of Mousl within this year.  He basically said that the Iraqi Army is not very well prepared and their strength in numbers are an issue as well.  This will not be an easy task as some may assume.  Thanks for the post

I don't think there is any surprises on this news story. It has been ongoing for months, every since they regained ground in Ramadi. They are like the batter stepping up to the plate and pointing his bat in the direction he plans to hit the ball. They have been announcing to the inhabitants that live there crap is fixing to hit the fan so they might want to leave before they begin their assault on ISIS. Brussels, Belgium will almost certainly hurry their efforts along to kick the black hearted bastids sorry arses. Once Mosul has been reclaimed it will be a huge disruption of their presence in Iraq! Bring it on Abadi and show them black hearts only win battles, not wars....
