Stiglitz: Sanders is Right - Everybody Has the Right to Healthcare, Sick Days and Family Leave

Recommended Posts

As a doctor, I can say EVERYONE has a right to medical care AND I have a right to be PAID for my services. Problem solved.

I spoke recently with a fellow who strongly believes this idea:

So I posed to him this question:

If you decide NOT to take care of yourself, eat way too much and the wrong foods and get many health problems, WHO has the obligation to cover your STUPIDITY? His response was, "What about children or really old people who happen to get health problems from no fault of their own?"

Ah, the false-leading question to a question. The QUESTION is: Is it a RIGHT? As a human being, I have the RIGHT to try to live as best I can, take care of myself and exercise to prevent future problem (or address existing conditions). This right can not be impeded by government/others. In other words, I have the right to take care of myself and, in fact, have a  responsibility to do so, if I give a SH__. If I CHOOSE not to give a crap, then I have the RIGHT to live in misery. Unfortunate events can happen, I see them all the time, however, they are not the norm, but the exception and family/community/government should move to help them in all means possible. However, it is not their RIGHT (by nature of being alive). It is my RIGHT to determine if I will help them and not be forced at gun-point (Oh, sorry we named this: taxation) to cover their condition.

When I left the States, I traveled around the world, spending my money to provide medical care to those in need. It was the greatest time in my life: positive effects from my heart, all free-willing. In 1 year, I burned thru 60 K of my only money helping countless people. All it took was my desire to make a difference in others. That is my RIGHT. I exercised it and have never looked back. I used to think like this person, but realized no amount of government "donations" would save the same amount of people giving from their hearts.

You have the RIGHT to seek health and wellness, to improve your condition. You do NOT have a right to force me to help you.

To your RIGHTS and health...Cheers

I applaud you Thaiexpat ! What you were able to accomplish would have cost a government a thousand times more and the fulfillment in knowing that you were able to make a difference in someone's life is a God given gift. The price of becoming a doctor both mentally and physically is beyond most of our comprehension, even mine, but I have had the good fortune to know a lot of doctors and I don't begrudge them for anything. They deserve to live in a good lifestyle and drive a nice car and eat of the fruits of there endeavors. I am a Christian and here on planet earth they are the closest thing to God that we have. There are not enough doctors in this world and I'm sure there are ways to bring more into existence but my hat is off to you ! Thanks for caring!

Thanks for the kind words, Tex and Dog. I wasn't really thinking about to that depth when I decided to hit the road. Just knew I had the ability (which many people don't, so they offer what they CAN, which is just as great and needed) and the desire burning in my heart to make a difference

Mark Twain said, "The 2 most important dates in your life are: the day you were born and the day you find out WHY.." I guess on that adventure, I found out the WHY. I really believed in socialized medicine prior to that trip. But, as we all know, government can never effectively use money/resources better than the private person/business. They just cant think in a manner which would promote the most good in an cost-effective manner. Now, education, national programs designed to improve health-sure. All for it. Teach people health and sanitation, improve water supplies and ensure the food is safe..All beyond a single person's ability. But to mandate that I am responsible to you, in spite of all the efforts to teach you better health ideas is YOUR RESPONSBILITY. This is the problem: people are taught government is their savior. Government MUST provide for me if I screw-up or get into a fix. The state has replaced the family/clan as the center of our existences. How about thinking for yourself? How about figuring out that if I smoke 5 packs-a-day, I MIGHT get a major health issue? There are plenty of organizations which help people from donations or volunteers and I have witnessed grinding poverty, which will break anyone's heart. Terrible. Unimaginable. So you do what you can, what you can afford, what you feel you need to do, but if folks always think they are the "victim", they will never take charge of their fate and then cry "Whoa is me!" when problems arise...Look in the mirror-there's your answer...

Actually, he's an admitted socialist, so what would anyone expect? I'm an admitted anarchist (without leaders type), so anything I said would be along my belief patterns. Now, the real question would be: Are socialist mentally-challenged? From my experience, they are. But again, I'm an anarchist! Why anyone would listen to his socialist ideas is beyond me.
