My 86 year old Dad supports the Veteran's Administration. His brother passed while on active duty many years ago.

I like the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities. Each of them assisted me during my divorce in 1999, when I hit rock bottom. Since then, I have established my own small business and enjoy giving food to Harvesters during the holidays.

You are so generous, Adam. I am certain that you will choose well. Thank you for all that you do for us...so grateful...so blessed. :)

Well, a lot of people seem to be posting information on vets and the programs that will help them.

My suggestion is something that will also help vets, but not perhaps in a way a lot of people would think about.

In my time here I have seen that a lot of people share their homes and their lives with a pet ... or two or more. Oft times they will use a picture of their pet(s) as their avatar. It was through a posting here on this forum that I found the program in Afganistan that rescues pets and gets them back to the United States where they can be with a "forever family" ... and I have supported them twice now when I have had the funds to do so.

What I propose is supporting, in some way, the local pet rescue operation. I know it is difficult to do that on a local basis as most major centers now have some kind of no-kill adoption facility that handles pets who no longer have people to live with. But there is one organization that usually services pretty well every community ...

The SPCA

They have veterninary services that are usually a little more affordable for people who have rescued a pet through their organization. They attempt to find homes and only use euthanazia when there just is no other choice and they cannot find an adoptive home for a pet. They use a lot of volunteer help, dog walkers and cat petters, and they have a lot of people helping out with donations of pet food and old blankets and towels for bedding. But they need more help. They need to have people write those checks for them. I do at least four times a year, one for each quarter. And when my husband died I sent a major donation in his name ... which made me feel good because it was one of his major causes to support.

I also know that a lot of veterans rely on the unconditional love, the constant companionship, and the wet nose waking them up in the morning ... that comes with sharing their lives with a pet, which can be found at the SPCA.

So, that is the cause I would see helped if possible.

And wherever your donation goes, whatever causes you support, thanks. Unofrtunately if the RV happens soon there won't be much input from DV Vets, but perhaps some of the DV Investors will take up the cause and make a donation to their local SPCA. I now the pets waiting for adoption will appreciate our efforts ... smile.gif

Others have mentioned Wounded Warriors, which I plan to help after the RV, but there is another one I can vouch for--Kansas City Hospice. I only had this particular Hospice, so I can't make comparisons, but this one was wonderful. When we finally accepted that my husband as dying with lung, liver, and bone cancer, we were directed to KCHospice. They came to our home several times each week while Jim was confined to a hospital bed. They bathed him, spent time with him when I had classes to teach and had to leave home for a while, gave us both kind advice and helped with Jim's meds. They gave us individually and together a huge amount of emotional support. As each step came, they gently guided both of us through it. When the time came, they found a crematoriam where Jim could be cremated at a reasonable price. They advised me at every step along this terrible journey. They helped Jim take his meds, and later, they helped me give them to him. They sent a clergyman of our faith to spend time with us, and utlimately, they were there for me after Jim's death. At that time, they also provided a counselor for me, as long as I needed, until I felt a little more emotionally steady. And finally, they put a Christmas tree in a nearby mall every Christmas, and for a small amount, they added a memorial star with Jim's name on it. They even offered to put Jim's star on there for me, if I didn't feel I could afford it. To this very day, I send money every year to buy the JimBear a star at Christmas. So I highly recommend this wonderful organization.

Thanks for this, Adam. It is a pleasure for me to make a suggestion for this exceptionally worthy cause.

Well, the holiday season is upon us... and that means lots of tryptophan, eggnog, and RV predictions!

So, here's what I'm going to do.

Starting next Monday, I am giving 25% of the ad space on every site I own to a few charities. This should benefit them far more than any check I can write... I am going to put these ads in front of hundreds of thousands of check writers!

First - help me pick the charities!

I need YOU to tell me what charity you would like to see benefit from this. If you have time - tell me why!

Please consider "Save the Children" at "Savethechildren.org"!!! In fiscal year 2010, 90 percent of all expenditures went to program services. That percentage is an average for all of Save the Children's programs worldwide. From their website, here are just a few of the things they do:

Save the Children serves impoverished, marginalized and vulnerable children and families in more than 120 nations. Our programs reach both children and those working to save and improve their lives, including parents, caregivers, community members and members of our partner organizations. We help save children’s lives, protect them from exploitation and assist them in accessing education and health care.

Through disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, rapid humanitarian relief and long-term recovery programs, Save the Children also assists millions of girls and boys at risk of or affected by natural disasters, conflicts and ethnic violence.

I hope you seriously consider this awesome organization that helps needy children and families domestically and overseas! : )

Please only military related charities. This site revolves around a foreign topic, which our military is heavily involved in.

I know there are many worthy categories, but I want this site to remain as "on topic" as possible and I know a lot of our members come here to read about things that are close to their hearts - news of foreign countries, like Iraq, where we have many family members away from home.

This one is for the troops. :twothumbs:

The Special Operations Warrior Foundation has been supporting the families of fallen and wounded Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel for over 31 years. The foundation provides two primary programs: full college scholarships and educational counseling to the children of fallen special operations personnel. Scholarships include tuition, books, fees, room & board, laptop and printer. The SOWF also provides immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel so their family ones could be bedside during their loved one’s recovery.

My suggestion ... and recommendation ... is any charitable organization, small or large, who dedicates their efforts toward helping abused children. These victims are without defense, they are blameless, and they are the true and graphic definition of "victim".

Given the circumstances under which these victims are protected, it is difficult to locate a definitive and specific charity/organization name. However, the goal is certainly more than worth the effort expended to identify them.

Just my opinion.

Adam, I have been taking medical teams to Honduras for the past 15 years. Actually I have been working with mission teams for the past 22 years, but the Predisan Clinic is one that I am committed to assisting. Each year it has been more exciting. They have a main clinic in Catacamas, Honduras, five mountain clinics, Cerapa Drug and Rehabilitation Clinic, nurses training and much more. The Predisan Clinic has hosted hundreds of medical, surgical, dental, eye specialists, counseling, etc. groups to assist the local community. In February I am leading an Eye Specialist and Counseling Team to work for a full week. This will be my 16th year to assist them. We have special fund raising events in several cities around the country, but the need is so great that it is hard to make a dent in their needs.

Note: I am not on the staff, but I am doing what I can to raise support for the clinic.

Here is are a couple of websites for you to view to get a feel of the work.

They would be honored and grateful for their consideration.

Well, why didn't you say that in the first place?

I'm male and simple-minded and need things to

be spelled out for me.

At least that's what my wife tells people...

Go ahead and delete my list, please.

Well, the holiday season is upon us... and that means lots of tryptophan, eggnog, and RV predictions!

It's also the time when I look at my life and take an extra moment to be thankful for the things I have, like family and freedom.

Then it makes me think about the men and women who deserve thanks for my freedom, and then I realize I could be more generous.

Starting next Monday, I am giving 25% of the ad space on every site I own to a few charities. This should benefit them far more than any check I can write... I am going to put these ads in front of hundreds of thousands of check writers!

So, how can you help?

First - help me pick the charities!

I am fond of charities that give special things to our soldiers - phone cards to those that need to call home, etc. I am fond of charities that do things for our Vets and our troops.

I just popped into chat and announced this... the first few suggestions were USO, helphospitalizedvets, wounded warrior, and nchv.gov

I need YOU to tell me what charity you would like to see benefit from this. If you have time - tell me why!

I'm looking forward to hearing your responses, and I'm REALLY looking forward to putting those ads up for the "chosen 4".

P.S. This thread is NOT about Dinar, chat, support, VIP, or any other issue... please don't mention it here. This thread is about what WE can do to help others ONLY.

Adam- I dont think yur original post was cause-specific. You mentioned what you like but you really left it open for others to recommend their charity, as you asked. It is evident in all the non-military charities suggestions you recieved.... ;)

Adam you are amazing. The only hope I have is that whatever charities are chosen that the funds go to the cause (majority of funds) rather then go to the organizations pocket.

Thank you for the nice words! The very reason I am asking the members for suggestions is because I don't keep up with the charities, and I don't want to arbitrarily choose one... only to find out the CEO kept 90% of the donations!

I figure with the group we have here, there's going to be some great feedback and I'm confident we will end up with the right organizations after polling the community.

I will be lucky to buy enough gift wishes for my Life Skills group of kids. I am non profit, so don't get paid for what I do, other than smile.gifSatisfaction, so my charity is in my own back yard. Keeping the kids off the streets, in school, and rewarding them for staying positive and focused. I will try to get them all a little something this holiday for sticking with my program. That will be my charity of choice. (until the RV when I can do more!wink.gif)

I will also surprise my Army Husband with an award of some sort for his contribution to these kids. His check is what keeps this program a float. He is a strong soldier for his country AND mentor to our community kids.

OOPS, I read the title and though this post was about "WHAT WE WERE ALL DONATING TO" because of me flying by so quickly (cleaning house, quickly checking DV for fun at the same time) Now I come back to read the posts because I thought this was interesting because I love hearing about charities and good doings, and now realize what the post actually says. rolleyes.gif Yep I'm goofy. Anyhow, I read about charities all the time, I will look some over. I personally love bringing in special needs kids like kids with Autism (asbergers) or kids struggling with dyslexia because they get teased by other kids. Joey Travolta runs an excellent program for kids with autism. I have volunteered to work his camps before. It's awsome. I structured my program somewhat after his. You can look it up, it's in LA (I think that's one of my favorites).

Once upon a time I was a missionary in Tucson for Native Americans, but I used to drive down with a large church to do work in Nogalas Mexico. There I saw poverty I could never explain. 5 thousand people lived in card board boxes with no running water or utilities of any sort. We took down with us one year toys and assorted gifts for the church we worked with in Nogalas. After a child choir sang to us the pastor stood with tears in his eyes. He said we would never know how important and what it meant that we brought those gifts for their people that Christmas. He went on to say the year before on Christmas Eve, the men of the church went to the American side of Nogalas and went to the garbage dump. There they got gifts for their families. That year the gifts they gave their families were things we threw away.

Tonight I am working at a Salvation Army Shelter for the homeless. Tonight it is getting down to freezing so I have allowed some people in even tho we are out of beds. I have set up cots. I have 20 year olds in the dining room watching tv, it is the only comfort they have. Tonight, they are safe. Tonight, they are off the streets. Tonight, I believe if I could, I would somehow give so that these people would have more than one night off the streets here in America. Thrown out of their homes by parents who are meth heads or lost jobs and wound up homeless, I think I could do something more than what I am doing some day.

I would give to the Salvation Army or another organization that takes care of the people society has thrown away.
