King Bean
Oh, GOOD. More committees. The demonstrators don't want miniscule government payments to the poor (though it's beneficial). They want REAL reform, improvements in services, living conditions, creation of jobs, infrastructure, security. And they want the corrupt, who have stolen billions of $$$ and put them in this position...to be jailed, have a day in court, recover the money and put them behind bars for good. Typical politicians. Pathetic effort. Edited October 15, 2019 by King Bean 1

6ly410
President Salih throws weight behind reforms to Iraqi electoral system Iraqi President Barham Salih meets with the representatives from the UN, the Independent High Electoral Commission and a number of lecturers, journalists, civil activists and legal experts on Tuesday, October 15, 2019. (Photo Credit: Iraqi President website) 26 minutes ago https://www.nrttv.com/En/News.aspx?id=15940&MapID=2 SULAIMANI — President Barham Salih has said that Iraq needs to undertake major reforms in order to restore faith in the country’s political system, most notably by tackling problems in the electoral system. Salih hosted representatives from the United Nations, the Independent High Electoral Commission, and a group of academics, journalists, civil activists, and legal experts on Tuesday (October 15) to discuss the issue. “We are holding this meeting because Iraq is passing through very difficult and hazardous circumstances,” Salih said, emphasizing the importance of gauging public sentiment in advance of discussions with the political parties, thereby symbolically and practically prioritizing the needs of the people over those of politicians. “Listening to different viewpoints and opinions will assist us in reaching a realistic reform of electoral law in a way to serves the public interest of our nation with all its different components,” he added. “Reform of the electoral system and national results are urgent demands.” Salih pointed to the lower turnout in the 2018 parliamentary election compared with previous cycles as evidence that the public was losing trust in the system. The electoral law should be amended to “eliminate administrative and financial corruption, so as to achieve demands of the Iraqi nation and strengthen freedom and democracy in the country,” he argued. He did not, however, go into detail about what sort of changes he might be proposing. (NRT Digital Media)

horsesoldier
So just exactly how long do they have to talk about this, or more to the point; how many times must they ( in 2019 ) repeat the same narrative month after month after month ( lets not forget the past few years this mantra has been repeated ) before they TAKE ACTION ? ! ? ! I have never seen a people quite literally TALK AN ISSUE TO DEATH ! Then they bury it like Kimchi, dig it up 3 months later to open up the conversation . . . and guess what it STILL STINKS because they still take no action ! And yet they continue to believe they're " making progress " ???? SON OF BIATCH ! ! ! ( I like the way Lewis Black says it. Butifldrm
Baghdad Post Thursday, October 201 917 14:18 Two officials reveal who was involved in sniping demonstrators Two snipers of Iranian-backed militias on roofs fired on demonstrators during recent protests in Iraq that killed more than 100 people and wounded more than 6,000 , security officials told Reuters . The agency said that snipers appeared on the roofs on the third day of the demonstrations, ie on the third of last October, noting that the demonstrators were fleeing with gunfire by them. Reuters sources learned that the leaders of these militias acted spontaneously in order to put down demonstrations against the government headed by Adel Abdul Mahdi, supported by armed groups and political factions supported by Iran. A source said they had verified evidence indicating that the snipers were elements of militias who "report directly to their commander rather than the commander of the armed forces." They belong to a group very close to the Iranians. The second source, who Reuters said was attending government security meetings, said black-clad militiamen assaulted protesters on the third day of unrest. He added that these gunmen were under the command of Abu Zainab al-Lami, a leader in the Popular Mobilization, and he was tasked with the task of "crushing demonstrations by a group of other leaders." The agency pointed out that the spokesman for the Popular Mobilization Ahmed al-Assadi denied the participation of the crowd in the recent demonstrations. Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan denied security forces fired on protesters, accusing armed groups of doing so. An official in the prime minister's office said it was too early to blame anyone, the crowd or the security forces, before the investigation. Demonstrations broke out on October 1 in IraqProtest against corruption and unemployment, then escalated and turned into calls for a complete reform of the political system. These demonstrations are unprecedented because they seemed spontaneous and were not invited by any political, partisan or religious, but they were unexpectedly bloody.
