tigergorzow
Iraqi forces now attacking ISIS with drones in Mosul -USAToday April 26 2017 01:38 PM . USATODAY At the peak in February, ISIS deployed 10 to 15 drones a day against Iraqi security forces as they fought to clear militants from Mosul, said Air Force Col. John Dorrian, a military spokesman in Baghdad. The number of militant drones is now down to about one or two a day, principally for surveillance, he said. During the past two weeks there have been no recorded incidents of militants using an armed drone in Iraq or Syria, according to coalition military statistics. The militants’ use of drones in Mosul highlighted the danger commercial drones have in the hands of ISIS.“They’ve actually gone to almost swarm-level capability in a couple of cases,” Lt. Gen. Michael Lundy, commander of the Combined Arms Center, said last month. The Army has been studying the militants' use of drones in Mosul to counter the threat in the future.“It’s a serious concern,” said Seth Jones, a counterterrorism expert at RAND Corp. “A range of terror organizations are able to buy off-the-shelf drones and use them against the United States and its allies.”Jones said terror groups are likely looking for ways to put larger munitions on the drones. In Iraq and Syria, the militants mostly used small grenade-sized munitions or mortar shells on drones.Even the smaller munitions can be deadly. In October a drone with an explosive hidden in it killed two Kurdish soldiers and injured two French Special Forces advisers who were with them. The explosive was detonated after the drone had been downed by Kurdish forces.Iraqi forces have not released data on how many deaths or injuries have been caused by drones. No U.S. forces have been injured by drones in Iraq or Syria.Their main benefit is surveillance, particularly in a crowded city like Mosul. The small aircraft, which have a range of several miles, can maneuver through tight streets and alleys to see what lies ahead. Iraqi forces now use them to identify militant snipers, which have been a significant threat in western Mosul. The militants have no way of blunting the use of drones by Iraqi forces. “The enemy doesn’t have any anti-drone technology other than try to blaze away at the drones,” Dorrian said. The small quad copters and other small commercial aircraft don’t compare to the level of sophistication and firepower of U.S. Predators and Reapers, which can stay in the sky for long periods of time and fire weapons with precision. The militants have been indiscriminate in their use of drones, the U.S. military said. “They just dropped (munitions) and they didn’t care who they dropped it on,” said Marine Brig. Gen. Rick Uribe, director of the Combined Joint Operations Center-Baghdad.But the weaponized drones have captured headlines, producing a propaganda benefit for ISIS. “It’s more of a psychological effect than anything else,” said Patrick Martin, an analyst at the Institute for the Study of War. http://www.thebaghdadpost.com/en/story/9820/Iraqi-forces-now-attacking-ISIS-with-drones-in-Mosul-USAToday

The town dates back to the third century AM, to the era of Seleucids Empire and is in a remnant of a kingdom called by the same name which was ran by four kings for about one century. tigergorzow
Iraqi Forces Use Military Drones Against IS Snipers Mira Rojkan 27/04/2017 - 00:53 Iraq SOFIA — Iraqi security forces have begun using military drones in the fight against the so-called Islamic State (IS) in order to kill their snipers and destroy stationary targets, Operation Inherent Resolve said on Wednesday. Colonel John Dorrian, a spokesperson for the Operation Inherent Resolve told reporters that the Iraqi forces have "turned the tables" in the fight against IS in Iraq by starting to use military drones as a new measure for destroying the IS positions in the region, Sputnik reported. Dorrian further explained that there is a significant success in the use of the drones, as the forces are better able to eliminate the IS snipers and Vehicle Born Improvised Devices (VBIDs) belonging to the extremist group. The military official also said that the US has fielded electronic warfare technology in the areas of Mosul in northern Iraq, which are capable of damaging the electrical components within the commercial off-the-shelf drones. However, he did not provide details on the counter-drone systems used by the Iraqi government forces in the ongoing war against the Islamic State group. http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/iraq/346071

tigergorzow
Mosul businesses start reconstruction without waiting for final Islamic State defeat by Mohamed Mostafa Apr 26, 2017, 2:57 pm Whatsapp ShareTweetWhatsappRedditE-mail Workers remove rubble during the rebuilding of a building destroyed during fighting between Iraqi forces and Islamic state fighters, eastern Mosul, Iraq, April 21, 2017. REUTERS/ Muhammad Hamed Mosul (Reuters) Some businessmen in Mosul have begun rebuilding their shattered premises without waiting for financial support from the cash-strapped Iraqi government or for the final defeat of Islamic State in the city. “If we wait for support, it could take a long time,” said Rafeh Ghanem, who owns an automotive spare-parts business in the eastern side of the city. An airstrike in January reduced the two-storey building that houses his shop and dozens of others to a heap of rubble and twisted steel rods. U.S.-backed Iraqi forces took back the eastern side of Mosul in January, after 100 days of fighting. They are now fighting Islamic State in districts lying west of the Tigris river that bisects the city. Ghanem said he and the 25 other businesses that rent space in the building agreed to contribute funds to help the landlord clear the debris and rebuild one of the two storeys. Reconstruction started on April 11 and Ghanem hopes to return to business in three to four months. He says waiting is of no use since the price of building materials is expected to rise as more reconstruction projects get under way, boosting demand for steel and cement. The city, captured by IS in 2014, has suffered extensive damage as hundreds of houses and public buildings including the airport, the main railway station and the university have been destroyed. Cement and steel prices have gone down steeply since the militants were defeated in eastern Mosul, as road connections have opened up with the rest of Iraq and Turkey, allowing supplies to resume. A metric ton of cement used to sell for up to 350,000 Iraqi dinars ($300) after the militants took over nearly three years ago. It now costs 80,000 to 90,000, said an importer, Saif Ibrahim. For Ghanem, there is no other choice but to rebuild the city which had a pre-war population of more than 2 million. “We live in this city, we have to bring it back.” ($1 = 1,167.0000 Iraqi dinars) http://www.iraqinews.com/features/mosul-businesses-start-reconstruction-without-waiting-final-islamic-state-defeat/
