Iraq, January 11, 2017

Iran is ready to begin exporting natural gas to Iraq via a pipeline as soon as Baghdad starts making payments, Iranian deputy oil minister for international affairs and trade, Amir-Hossein Zamaniniya, has said.

“Iran is ready to start the export of gas to Iraq and Iraq is also ready to receive the gas. However, the related letter of credit (L/C) for the project is yet to be opened,” Iran’s Press TV reported on Tuesday.

Iran and Iraq signed an agreement in 2013 under which Iran would export natural gas from its huge South Pars field to power plants in Sadr, Baghdad and al-Mansuriya in Iraq. The project is expected to bring Iran US$3.7 billion in revenues annually.

Last week, Iran’s oil minister Bijan Zangeneh told the oil ministry’s news service Shana that the country’s gas production had increased by 50 percent over the past three years thanks to new development phases at South Pars.

A year after the lifting of the western sanctions, Iran is eager to regain its previous oil export market share and sign deals with oil and gas majors for the development of its vast crude oil and natural gas resources.

Just recently, the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) released the list of 29 companies that have qualified for bidding in oil and gas tenders.

Uranium is on the edge of becoming one of the world’s hottest commodities once again, and this is a once-in-25-year event. This small company could be on the verge of a huge breakout.
The list shows that the biggest European producers, including Shell, Eni, Total, and OMV have all qualified. BP, however, has pulled out of the race because of worry that relations between Iran and the U.S. will get heated once Donald Trump takes office later this month, according to the Financial Times.

Those that qualified also include China’s Sinopec, CNPC, CNOOC, and CNPW, as well as the state-owned oil companies of Indonesia and Malaysia – Pertamina and Petronas – plus Japan’s INPEX Corporation, Itochu, Mitsui, and Mitsubishi, and Japan Petroleum Corporation. Russian Gazprom and Lukoil were also among those qualified for the tenders, as were Danish Maersk, Indian ONGC, and Polish PGNiG.

IRANIAN GAS TO FLOW INTO IRAQ YEARS AFTER INITIAL AGREEMENT
Iraq, January 23, 2017
pic862641.jpg?84723
Iran will begin exporting natural gas to Iraq this week, Iran's oil minister said, years after the initial announcement of construction of an Iran-Iraq natural gas pipeline and postponements because of awaited payments from Baghdad, The additional fuel should supplement Iraq's under powered electricity grid.
Bijan Zangeneh, the Iranian oil minister, was reported by the Iranian news agency Tasnim as saying that the pumping of natural gas through the pipeline is slated to begin on Tuesday.
The pipeline connects the largest natural gas field in the world, the South Pars/North Dome Gas Condensate field, which is shared by Iran and Qatar, to the Iraqi city of Basra. The Basra Province has some of the country's largest natural gas power plants and a processing plant.
Rudaw reported in May 2016 that the pipeline will supply 50 million cubic-meters of gas per day, capable of generating 3,500 megawatts of power per day.
Though Iraq is a major OPEC oil producer, the country has been incapable of meeting its residents' electricity consumption. Iraq's peak electricity demand was 21,000 megawatts in the summer and the grid is only able to supply about 13,000 megawatts, Reuters reported last April.
Iran and Iraq signed a 2013 agreement regarding Iran's export of natural gas, but the pipeline wasn't completed until June 2016 because of security issues , then Tehran was awaiting payments from Baghdad.
“Iran is ready to start the export of gas to Iraq and Iraq is also ready to receive the gas. However, the related letter of credit for the project is yet to be opened,” Iran's oil ministry said earlier in January, cited by Iran’s Press TV.
He also announced through the ministry that the country's gas production had increased by 50-percent over the past three years because of improvements at South Pars.

Hi Yota, Why is Iran sending gas to Iraq? I thought Iraq had

nannab, you are correct about Iraq having probably 10 times as much of gas as Iran. Problem is between Sadame Hussein an Maliki Iraq is at a minimum 50 years behind the rest of the world. Iraq is flaring off (burning) the same gas that their buying from Iran, why, because they have no way of refining it or controlling it. They lack the infrastructure to harness this valuable resource.

Their locked into a 6 year contract now with Iran beginning in August 2013 so they have time to build their own pipe line an control measures of this natural gas their buying. They need this gas to run the electric plants their gonna build along with the other uses of gas, I'm thinking this 6 year contract will give them more than ample time to get their own gas infrastructure online an operational...
