IS Chemical Attack Has No Impact on Iraqi Forces in Western Mosul

IS Chemical Attack Has No Impact on Iraqi Forces in Western Mosul

SOFIA — A chemical attack conducted by the so-called Islamic State (IS) in western Mosul against the Iraqi Security forces in the area has not resulted in any actual impact on the forces or the US advisers traveling with them.

Commanding General Joseph Martin from the Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command-Operation Inherent Resolve told reporters on Wednesday, that the Iraqi security forces were in the vicinity of one of the chemical attacks by IS, and were then taken to the nearby hospital where they were given the appropriate level of medical care needed. Martin pointed out that no casualties have been reported to this moment, Kuwait News Agency reported.

However, the US military is currently testing the chemical agent to conclude what it was that IS used against the Iraqi forces. Martin explained that the chemicals used by the IS militants in the past are low-grade chemicals, because of the lack of production capability.

The Iraqi forces continue advancing against the IS militants in western Mosul, after they liberated the entire eastern part of the city in the beginning of this year. The extremist group has lost a large number of territories and members in the ongoing operations, which leads to the use of chemical weapons, as they put all efforts to push back the Iraqi forces.

Several Iraqi Soldiers Treated after IS Chemical Attack: US
MOSUL — Following a chemical attack by Islamic State (IS) militants against the Iraqi army over the weekend, several soldiers required medical treatment, a US official said Wednesday.

Major General Joseph Martin, the commanding general for the US-led coalition's land component, said the attack took place in western Mosul where the Iraqi troops were working alongside US and Australian military advisors, as reported by the AFP.

According to the official, there was no confirmation that the Australians and Americans were exposed.

"The Iraqi security forces ... were in the vicinity of one of the strikes. They were taken back to the appropriate level of medical care to make sure that they were alright,” he explained, noting that nobody has died there was no serious impact on the forces.

16 IS members arrested as security measures tightened southern Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Security troops heightened measures at the liberated regions and searched for Islamic State militants, in south of Mosul, a source from Nineveh police said.

“Security forces imposed tight measures in Qayyarah and Hamam al-Alil towns and arrested 16 IS members,” Captain Jasem Mohamed told BasNews.

“Several others, who were hiding among displaced families at Hamam al-Alil camps, were arrested over doubts of involvement with IS,” he added.

Interior Ministry’s Rapid Response forces declared recapturing 30 percent of western Mosul’s Old City.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S-led coalition and paramilitary troops, launched an offensive in October 2016 to recapture Mosul, the group’s largest stronghold in Iraq.

The eastern side of the city was recaptured in January. A new offensive was launched in February to retake the western side. Battles in the west are believed to be much more difficult due to the density of residential areas and the high number of civilians.

Retaking Mosul could be symbolic blow to the extremist group’s self-styled “Islamic Caliphate” declared in 2014 when the group occupied several parts of the country.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State intelligence official died Wednesday when U.S.-led coalition airstrikes targeted him in western Mosul, according to the Iraqi Directorate of General Military Intelligence.

The directorate said it had received information that Ahmed Khaled Najm, aka Abu Obaida, was killed in an airstrike while moving on a motorbike at al-Zanjili district.

It said Abu Obaida was Islamic State’s area intelligence official for al-Tayaran district.

Iraqi forces recaptured the eastern side of Mosul in January after three months of fighting with IS, and sat on a new offensive in February to retake the western region. Commanders said earlier this month that the Islamic State was controlling only less than seven percent of Iraqi territory, and that only six districts remained to declare western Mosul free from militants.

IS has lost many of its senior commanders since operations launched to retake the western side of Mosul.

Iraqi police commanders said earlier on Wednesday they recaptured 30 percent of western Mosul’s Old City, a strategic IS bastion which is viewed as vital for realizing final victory over the extremist group.

The commander of the Iraqi armed forces, Haider al-Abadi, inspected, on Wednesday, headquarters of the anti-terrorism forces, and the 9th Armored Division on the right side of the city of Mosul. The Prime Minister’s media office issued a brief statement saying that Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived, this morning, in the city of Mosul to check on the troops of ‘We Are Coming, Nineveh’ Operations.

Earlier on Wednesday, al-Abadi visited a number of the liberated districts in Mosul and listened to the problems of its residents.

The Iraqi Joint Forces face considerable difficulties in advancing in old city because of its narrow alleys where military vehicles can not enter, as well as the overcrowding of civilians. A spokesman for the rapid reaction forces said on Wednesday Iraqi forces had liberated 40% of the old city's districts on the right coast of Mosul.

"The federal police and rapid response forces liberated 40% of the area of the old area in Mosul," Major Abdul Hussein al-Ghazi told the press. "The Iraqi forces have recovered this percentage after fighting against IS organization that lasted more than 38 days," he added.

"The federal police force and the rapid response are rushing towards Thawra and Zanjili neighborhoods north of the dairy bar," said police commander Major Raed Shaker Jawdat. He added that the federal police shelled gathering of IS leaders in Zinjili neighborhood, killing the first assistant of IS's leader.

He confirmed that the federal police artillery also killed the extremist Abu al-Walid al-Tunisi and four of his companions after the bombing targeted their headquarters near the Black Mosque in old city.

The Secretary-General of Peshmerga Ministry, Jabbar Yawar, accused, on Wednesday, the Iraqi government of putting obstacles to the start of the liberation of Hawija province south-west of the province of Kirkuk from the grip of IS organization. "We held several meetings with the Iraqi government and the international coalition forces before launching the liberation operations in the city of Mosul. We asked them to start the liberation of Hawija first, but the federal government refused," Yawar said.

He added that the Kurdistan regional government has completed the necessary preparations for the restoration of Hawija, but the federal government to block the start of the process, and see the start after the liberation of Mosul in full.

The Deputy President of the Republic Nuri al-Maliki warned, on Wednesday, the existence of plans to target the political situation in the country, while Iyad Allawi, Vice President of the Republic said that all parties should respect the unity of Iraq and sovereignty, expressing full rejection of all forms of harmful regional interference in its national affairs. This came in separate meetings of Maliki and Allawi with the US ambassador in Baghdad.

The Deputy President of the Republic Nuri al-Maliki, warned, Wednesday, there are plans to target the political situation in the country, while the US ambassador in Iraq, stressed his country to stand by the Iraqi people in its fight against terrorism.

Maliki’s office said in a statement that during the meeting with the US ambassador in Baghdad, Douglas Allen Silliman, discussed relations between the two countries and issues of common concern, as well as developments on the regional developments and the progress of liberalization of Nineveh province operations.

The statement added, "Maliki said that the risk of IS will disappear soon, in light of the significant progress made by the security forces and the popular crowd in Mosul and the rest of the breakers operations."

He warned al-Maliki, according to the statement, of "schemes aimed at the political situation in the country against the backdrop of the challenges in the region," he said. “Iraqis reject foreign interference in the affairs of their country."

He noted that the unity of Iraq and its people are the safety valve in the face of any targeting, calling on the United States to continue its support for Iraq in the fight against terrorism. For his part, the US ambassador stressed "his country to stand by the Iraqi people in its fight against terrorism

US Trying to Identify Chemical Agent Used in Mosul Attack

April 19, 2017 7:45 PM

FILE - Iraqi forces are seen in Bab Jadid neighborhood, Mosul, Iraq, April 3, 2017. Islamic State militants reportedy shelled Iraqi forces with chemical weapons agents in the Urouba and Bab Jadid districts on April 15.

FILE - Iraqi forces are seen in Bab Jadid neighborhood, Mosul, Iraq, April 3, 2017. Islamic State militants reportedy shelled Iraqi forces with chemical weapons agents in the Urouba and Bab Jadid districts on April 15.

Islamic State militants used a chemical in an attack on Iraqi forces in Mosul over the weekend, and the agent has been sent for testing to try to identify it, the U.S. general commanding coalition ground forces in Iraq said Wednesday.

Major General Joseph Martin, speaking to Pentagon reporters via videoconference, said Islamic State militants had lobbed chemical shells at Iraqi security forces in west Mosul but the attack had "had no impact."

"The Iraqi security forces ... were in vicinity of one of the strikes," Martin said. "They were taken back for the appropriate level of medical care. ... Nobody's been impacted. Nobody's died."

"We're not certain at this time exactly what the agent is," he added. "We have sent it back for testing but we're still waiting for the outcomes."

Martin declined to say how many Iraqi security forces may have been exposed to the chemicals.

Officers in Iraq's Federal Police told Reuters on Sunday that Islamic State militants had shelled government forces with chemical weapons agents in the Urouba and Bab Jadid districts on Saturday. The attack caused only minor wounds, the force said in a statement.

Martin declined to give details about the incident, including whether coalition military advisers had donned chemical weapons protection suits or whether an alert had gone around afterward to notify troops of possible chemical attacks.

He also repeatedly declined to clearly state whether any U.S. or Australian military advisers were with the Iraqis at the time of the attack or had been treated for chemical exposure, as some media have reported.

"Our advisers ... are with Iraqi security forces at various command and control locations throughout Iraq," he said.

"They share the same risk the Iraqis do," he added. "When exposed, if exposed to chemical munitions ... we have the force protection equipment and we've got the training that all of our soldiers have done to protect themselves."

Asked if he was acknowledging that U.S. or Australian advisers were with the Iraqi security forces at the time of the incident, Martin repeated a variation of his previous answer that advisers served with the Iraqis and shared the same risks.

Asked if he was saying no U.S. or Australian forces had been exposed to chemicals, Martin said: "We have not confirmed exposure at this time."

Government of Iraq and UNDP initiate 202 projects to accelerate the stabilization of Mosul

Apr 19, 2017

Baghdad—Building on dozens of projects already underway, the Government of Iraq today authorized UNDP’s Funding Facility for Stabilization (FFS) to initiate 202 more projects to accelerate the immediate stabilization of Mosul and greater Ninewa Governorate.

The projects will repair damaged water, sewage and electrical systems, rehabilitate education and health facilities, and boost the local economy by employing youth on work brigades to remove rubble, open transport routes and revitalize the city.

At a signing ceremony in Baghdad, Dr. Mahdi Muhsin Al-Alaq, Acting Secretary General of the Council of Ministers, emphasized that providing these basic services would pave the way for the return of displaced people to liberated areas.

Ms. Lise Grande, UNDP Resident Representative for Iraq, said: “This authorization comes at just the right moment. A lot of work is already underway, but so much more needs to be done. We’re ready, and now we have the green light to go.”

The 202 projects were developed by the key provincial and line directorates, in cooperation with UNDP’s FFS, and are designed to support stabilization efforts in Mosul city and greater Ninewa Governorate.

Since the start of military operations to retake Mosul six months ago, nearly half a million people have been displaced from their homes. More than two-and-a-half years of ISIL control and conflict has crippled the city’s infrastructure. Homes have been destroyed, schools and health centres damaged, and crucial public infrastructure is in ruins.

Once the operation to free western Mosul from ISIL is over, the task of reconstructing a safe, functioning metropolis will be one of the biggest stabilization initiatives since World War II.

Established in June 2015, FFS is working in newly liberated areas in Anbar, Salah al-Din, Ninewah and Diyala governorates. More than 500 projects are completed or being implemented across 22 locations. Since the start of the crisis, over 1.6 million people have returned to their homes.

Iraqis in eastern Mosul are no longer isolated from the world

The trade of satellite dishes is flourishing in the east of the liberated city after the expulsion of the jihadists, and those seeking to obtain it want to follow the news.

MOSUL (Iraq) - "Now we know what is going on in the world," says Mohammed Turki, who is installing a picket on the roof of a house in the eastern Cairo district of Mosul, which for a long time was governed by the Islamic state.

Iraqi forces regained control of eastern Mosul in January and are now fighting to expel jihadists from the west of the city. Residents of the area are scrambling to buy and install satellite dishes that were banned under jihadi rule.

They can not install the pick-up dish on their own, they need an engineer to install it, and the competition is fierce, "said Turki, who works in the installation of satellite dishwashers.

"The people of Mosul were isolated from the world, we did not even know what was going on around us" during the period of jihadist control.

Today, satellite sappers are invading the sidewalks in the east of the city, and television has returned to connect the people of Mosul with the world.

Two and a half years later, under the rule of the Islamic state, which now controls only 6.8 percent of Iraqi territory, people are trying to evade jihadist restrictions in order to maintain their links to the world despite everything. "At a good time, we were fixing the dishes inside the house and covering them with shader," said Sarmad Raad, 26, a resident of the Green Apartments neighborhood in eastern Mosul.

"The jihadists were roaming around and forcing the antenna shops to shut down, they were checking to make sure they did not sell satellite dishes, and they were watching people and flogging or imprisoning those who owned them," said Ala.

Preventing the installation of antennas was a way of organizing the Islamic state to isolate people from their surroundings. His fighters have also stormed and burned the building of the local Mosuliya channel.

On roads linking eastern neighborhoods of Mosul, rusty satellite dishes taken by jihadists appear to be stacked on the sides of the roads.

Most of those seeking to get a picket will follow the news, especially the news on the western side of Mosul, and keep pace with the progress of Iraqi forces, "allowing us to know liberated neighborhoods to check to our nearest," says a member of the Sarmad family.

But Dalal, Sarmad's sister, says that "television is entertaining, especially humor programs," but regrets the continued power outages, making it difficult to enjoy long hours of viewing.

In the Cairo district, Mohammed Turki carries his equipment and heads for a family home recently returned to Baghdad after the jihadists arrived in 2014.

"We were not here, but the fans entered our house and looted everything in it, even television," says Mohammed, 17, the owner's son.

Turkish starts the extension with a television on the roof of the house to make sure the dish is directed on the correct satellite, before installing it inside the house.

Members of the family smile broadly when the "Mosuliya" channel, which is now broadcast outside Mosul, is shown on the screen.

Turki says the cost of the installation is affordable "about 10,000 Iraqi dinars (eight dollars)." I do five installations a day. "

The same work is done by Ali, 16, who works in a satellite dish store in al-Zahra neighborhood in eastern Mosul.

"We come every morning to the store and we prepare the dish here, and when we finish, we carry the equipment and go to the house of the person who wants to install it," says Ali, who prepares a dish. "People come to us to buy."

However, Alaa sees that the trade has not yet reached its peak.

"Today, while trade is booming, it has not yet exceeded 10 per cent compared to pre-entry levels," he explains. "The material and living conditions of people are still very bad."

Iraqi jets intensively bomb ISIS positions in right bank of Mosul

The Iraqi airforce are currently shelling ISIS posts at al-Maydan and al-Smaka in the right bank of Mosul, a security source said on Thursday.

The source also asserted that Federal Police forces are also bombing ISIS positions in the right bank of Mosul with artillery and rockets.

These efforts are part of an offensive launched on 19th of February by the US-backed Iraqi force supported by Iranian-backed sectarian IMIS militias to oust ISIS terrorists from Mosul, their last major stronghold in Iraq.

US tries to identify chemical agent used by ISIS terrorists in Mosul

US tries to identify chemical agent used by ISIS terrorists in Mosul

ISIS terrorists used a chemical in an attack on Iraqi forces in Mosul over the weekend, and the agent has been sent for testing to try to identify it, the US general commanding coalition ground forces in Iraq said, as reported by Reuters.

Major General Joseph Martin, speaking to Pentagon reporters via videoconference, said ISIS terrorists had lobbed chemical shells at Iraqi security forces in west Mosul but the attack had "had no impact."

Martin declined to give details about the incident, including whether coalition military advisers had donned chemical weapons protection suits or whether an alert had gone around afterwards to notify troops of possible chemical attacks.

An Iraqi unit with US and Australian advisers was targeted by mustard gas shot by ISIS terrorists, as reported by CBS News on Wednesday.

Twenty-five Iraqis required treatment but none of the advisers were injured.

Brigadier General Yahya Rasoul said that six soldiers suffered breathing problems from Sunday’s attack and were treated in a field clinic. An investigation was then launched to determine what type of gas was used.

The attack marked the second chemical attack of its kind in several days. It occurred one day after an Iraqi military officer said ISIS militants launched a gas attack in the al-Abar neighborhood in western Mosul.

Two army officers say masks and other equipment have been distributed to forces in case of future gas attacks. They spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to speak to media.

An officer with the counter-terrorism services forces said ISIS fired a rocket loaded with chlorine.

US-backed Iraqi forces are battling ISIS terrorists in the more densely populated western half of Mosul. Iraqi officials say more than half of western Mosul has been retaken.
