HRW: 32 arrested at peaceful protest in Iraqi Kurdistan Region

32 arrested at peaceful protest in Iraqi Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) security forces and local police detained 32 unarmed protesters in Erbil on March 4, 2017, at a peaceful demonstration against recent clashes in Sinjar, HRW said on Friday.

According to three protesters who were arrested, 23 were released that same day, and three more within four days, but six, all foreign nationals, are still being held. A police chief ordered one protester who was released to permanently leave Erbil, where he was living.

Local media reported that on March 6, the Director General of Erbil Police, Abdulkhaliq Talaat, stated that the protesters “were arrested by a court order,” and would be released based on a court decision. He did not elaborate on the reasons for the arrests. No media coverage of the arrests alleged any use of violence or other acts that disrupted the peace.

“KRG authorities appear to be detaining protesters for no good reason,” said Lama Fakih, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “They are also using threats and retaliation to discourage future protests, undermining freedom of expression and assembly in the Kurdish region.”

On March 4 at about 2 p.m., several dozen unarmed protesters attempted to gather near Sami Abdulrahman Park in western Erbil to peacefully protest against recent clashes between the Kurdistan Region of Iraq's Rojava Peshmerga and PKK-affiliated Shingal Resistance Units in Sinjar, three protesters told Human Rights Watch. They had posted the event on Facebook.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) The Iraqi Federal Police command said Friday its forces recaptured some areas near central Mosul’s Old City, hours after operations were reported to have slowed down due to bad weather.

The Federal Police said forces took over Pasha Mosque, Bab al-Sarai market and al-Adalah street, all inside the Old City and near Grand Nuri Mosque, where IS supreme leader Abu Bakr al-baghdadi declared the establishment of the group’s rule in Iraq in 2014.

Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat said in a statement that forces continued to advance against the strategic district from several directions. “Federal Police and Rapid Response forces, stationed near the Old Bridge along the (Tigris) river and on the outskirts of Bab al-Bid, resumed their military operations today,” said Jawdat.

He said the advances were backed by drones, rocket launchers and aerial bombardment on the extremist group’s locations in Ras al-Khour, Bab al-Bid and al-Hadbaa regions in the Old City.

Iraqi generals view the recapture of the densely-populated and -structured Old City as essential for victory over IS in western Mosul, where operations launched in February to achieve an eventual collapse of the group’s self-styled “Islamic Caliphate”.

Government forces recaptured eastern Mosul in January after three months of fighting.

Progress has slowed down over the past two days in central Mosul due to bad weather and the area’s narrow alleyways which made it difficult for military vehicles to go through.

It does not look any different than it did 3 days ago.  Are you sure this is correct???  From the other reports I am reading, the map should be a lot more St. Patrick's Day GREEN.

Texasmike1958,  I'm certain the Iraqi & Coalition Forces are not providing the updated version they have taken from ISIS to date.  However, I'm posting 17 Mar 2017 based on the information provided from twitter #mosul which I'm sure is not 100% accurate.  I have also noticed the Coalition Airstrikes have decreased over the past few days as well so that tells me Iraqi & Coalitions Forces are extremely close to ISIS.  Reminder, The are encircled by the Coalition Forces.

They have a bit more space still than I thought. Yet, I get confused from hearing reports that GOI has the Western portion sealed and secured and battling ISIS in the Eastern half of Mosul. Then another report says the exact opposite. Thanks to this map it looks like the East coast is all liberated and under control. As is the tip of the West coast of Mosul. IMHO they should flank the whole place in between, and squish em into the middle. Then have them a turkey shoot on whatever moves. That will send a message louder than a boar fart in a wooded canyon.
