The meeting took place on the sideline of the 53rd Munich Security Conference.

Pence thanked Barzani and Kurdistan Region for cooperating with the central government in Baghdad in the ongoing military operations against Islamic State (IS).

“ discussed need to accelerate plans to defeat ISIS with KRG President Barzani,” Pence tweeted on his official account, using a different acronym for the Islamic State.

MUNICH — On sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani on Saturday met with a number of world officials including Antonio Guterres, the UN Chief, and Mike Pence, the US Vice President, to discuss a range of issues including bilateral ties and the war on terrorism.

In his meeting with Barzani, Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General, thanked Barzani for the significant role Kurdistan Region has played in defeating the Islamic State (IS) and also hosting near two million IDPs and refugees.

In a separate meeting, Barzani and Mike Pence, the US Vice President exchanged views on the battle against IS and the US-led coalition's efforts. Pence commended the role of Peshmerga forces in defeating the extremist organization and reiterated his country's sustained support to the Kurdistan Region.

John McCain, the Senior US Senator, and Barzani also met on the sidelines of the MSC and discussed various political and security issues, mainly the anti-terror efforts. Mccain valued Barzani and Peshmerga's role in defeating the IS organization.

Barzani also met the deputy prime minister of Kuwait and he is scheduled also to meet Paolo Gentiloni Silveri, the Italian Foreign Minister, and Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen, the German Defence Minister, in separate meetings.

Iraqi Prime minister Haidar Abadi met on Saturday with US Vice President Mike Pence on the fringe of Munich Security Conference.

During the meeting, Pence asserted his country's commitment to extend all support to Iraq, pledging the US full commitment to plans and efforts exerted to stand against terrorism and realize stability in all parts of Iraq.

The American Vice President also reiterated US President Donald Trump's stance supportive of Iraq as he stated in his recent phone call with Abadi who was invited to visit the US.

Pence also voiced his admiration of Abadi's government performance and its plan to overcome all economic difficulties through tough economic reforms. He also conveyed his greetings to the Iraqi government on achieving victory over Daesh or ISIS in Mosul and offered condolences to the victims who fell on the hands of the terrorist groups in various parts of Iraq.
