So, You Think Socialism Isn’t Really that Bad?

Is socialism really so bad? That was a question from my hairdresser, when I told her after last election that Obama would change the USA and we would slowly become a socialist republic.

And I said “YES“, because I know – I grew up in a socialist country, the former Czechoslovakia. After the government nationalizes everything, there is no private business left. You work for the government, your children go to government schools, you shop in government stores (you hardly find there what you need – shortages of everything all the time). You can only visit a doctor allocated to you, and the government controls where you travel (you’re not allowed to leave the country without a special permit). And you listen only to radio stations owned by the government and see only TV programs approved by the government.

Some people here just don’t get it and think that this cannot happen here. The first communist president in former Czechoslovakia, where I grew up, was elected in a free election. He promised to “spread the wealth by taking it from the rich and giving it to the poor”. Soon after that, everybody was poor; only the politician were rich (they had access to specials stores where they could get everything they wanted).

Also rich were the people who run the government stores. The customers had to bribe them to get, say, a bike for kids for Christmas, because there were not enough of them manufactured or imported.

We were never hungry and always had some food at home. Only after we defected did I realize that we had been poor. But because all our neighbors and kids in school had not had much more, it did not matter so much then. We were fed the idea that capitalism is very bad for people, that we have to be patient and one day we will live in a society where everybody will get everything according to their needs. For that reason, we were asked to tighten our belts.

I compare it to a ZOO where there is a fence so you cannot leave; but you won’t die of hunger.

We were brainwashed in schools from an early age. In each classroom, next to the blackboard there were pictures of Lenin, Stalin and our current president. We had to march on May 1st (Labor Day) in parades celebrating our workers, waving flags and placards with communist slogans. One of them was “Move FORWARD left foot, right foot, NOT one step BACK“. Sound familiar?

I could not believe the hundreds of signs I saw at the DNC Charlotte convention. FORWARD/NOT BACK. How about Michelle Obama asking all to keep on sacrificing for our own kids and grandkids (while she enjoys luxury vacations traveling in the large private jet paid for by us taxpayers)?

The socialist government I knew was even unable to manage factories and produce enough food for people, so it eventually collapsed.. Socialism does not work and will never work.

Alena Pavlik grew up in the former Czechoslovakia. She currently resides in Southern Florida.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the fall of the iron curtain there is only one socialist country of that kind left in the world: North Korea.

When people in America talk about socialism today they mean something completely different, not the police state like the old USSR where "everybody was equal but some were more equal than others" and where you were shot trying to leave the country.

N. Korea is a Communist country.

There are many Socialist countries in the world today.

Brazil, Cuba, and even England, to name a few.

Britannica:

socialism, social and economic doctrine that calls for public rather than private ownership or control of property and natural resources. According to the socialist view, individuals do not live or work in isolation but live in cooperation with one another. Furthermore, everything that people produce is in some sense a social product, and everyone who contributes to the production of a good is entitled to a share in it. Society as a whole, therefore, should own or at least control property for the benefit of all its members.

We have repeatedly explained the 'FORWARD' concept of obummer's party agenda to people and they don't believe us.

Even after being presented with the facts of this ideology and it's history, and of his Davis/Ayres/Wright/Chicago commie mob connections, people are still in denial.

They refuse to believe his agenda is one hell-bent on this kind of evil.

(Every one of them should read Mychal Massie's take on their 'king' and saviour'. When we showed it to some, they said, "oh, that brother is just jealous". Are you kidding?!)

It's frustrating after a while and all we can do is shake our heads in dismay at the ignorance.

So many indoctrinated in our schools systems inundated by liberal 'edjukators' now seem lost to the concept of LIBERTY, FREEDOM, JUSTICE.

We reiterate: Here it's the 21st Century and we still can't fix STUPID.

As 'Ol Sarge, A Great American Patriot, used to say..."I weep for my Republic"...

If you say so, but I was referring to the above article about former Czechoslovakia which, by your definition, also was a communist country rather than a socialist one.

The meaning of the word in a dictionary does not even begin to do justice to the ugly realities of the ideology.

N. Koreans and Cubans are not in a happy place. Dismal failures by their respective governments.

Brazil is a tangled mess. People have to have bullet-proof car windows and the murders and kidnappings are daily occurences. The povert/disease - RAMPANT. There are only true 'have & have nots' there.

Don't let their BRIC staus fool you.

England is finding the efforts they've made through socialized programs are failing, look at the medical which, also when tried to be emulated by CANADA has proven to be a failure. Brits at the top are fat & happy, everyone else is paying the price - classic. It's just taking longer to fail there, but it will.

Once they shove the idea down the throats of the ignorant masses and the masses are choking on it's ramifications, those at the top grow fat and put the military betwixt themselves and the people.

Just as obummer has set up by using his executive privilege and cutting past the rights of all Americans. People aren't kidding when they say they fully expect Martial Law, FEMA Camps, drones against dissenters, etc.

It's NO JOKE.

The realities are far different from the concept as explained in your Funken-Wagnals.

Not trying to defend any particular system but how is that different from the USA. Americans on the top are fat & happy. What about the rest? Are you really saying that there are no poor people in the USA?

I could care less of what you want to refer to it as. I can tell you from history. What commie country has a longer more profitable way of life the the former USA. What country has had the same Constutition longer than the USA. Why are people not triyng to migrate to cuba, n. korea, china, any other major player on the world stage. Tell me where on the planet is life any better than here before the liberal marxist took over?

Hey, JOEB....

Read what R2D2 said. Kudos R2... +1 from us!

At least here EVERYONE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY to succed.

That is removed by socialism/fascism/communism.

If you fail, that's on you.

Government programs designed to help need go only so far.

NOT ALL THE WAY!

Before there were Big Gubment programs, neighbors, families, benefactors, churches took care of the weak and helpless.

If you failed, you manned up, pulled yourself up by your bootstraps and forged ahead in the land of opportunity for all.

Now most people on gubment programs don't even really need it! (Especially were it not for what the gubment has done to them!)

A corrupt gubment has shafted and enabled.

Were our Laws, Constitution, Bill of Rights adhered to as designed, we'd all be alot better off.

We have lived in Europe. (Stationed there often, England, too)....

Beautiful places, but ...

They had to resort to the EURO...

Yuh.... how's THAT workin' for ya..... <_<

France and England especially let in the terrorists,

now look what they're dealing with!

They're SO tolerant with their socialism they'll take anybody --- now look where they are with that.

Nanny states - bad idea.

Sarge Ladies Thanks for your comment's. It all stands out to The Truth!! IMO This part here is what will destroy our Faith and Image that all Americans have toward our Military. What I'm saying is 99% of us Love our Men and Women in Uniform!! The statement you made

will Destory that Faith and Image!! I hate to say it, but IMO this is what Breaks the Camel back!! This has been in the back of my mind for a while now!!

Americans do not know much about life in other countries but they certainly are experts on critisizing them. What do you know about life in Europe?

Sorry Joe... that's just a continued myth! Americans know much more about the world than most other populations... we have to... we defend most of the world. Just because we have a unique premise to our way of life, doesn't mean we don't "understand" other cultures... we just don't care to integrate them into ours... we can't, and shouldn't. Also, much of our "criticism" comes in the form of our relentless defense of our unique values... that make us American... no apologies necessary. The USA HAS EARNED IT'S REPUTATION, proudly... and hence, is still the most attractive civilization on the planet. Another common mistake, insisted by other cultures: It is a mistake to try to compare the USA to the rest of the world... it is in our differences that make us unique and attractive.

Personally, I know much about life in other parts of the world... even behind the old Iron Curtain, as I was there in the eighties. And I don't presume to be alone in my analyses and understandings... there are plenty of us. And today... the world is a small place, easily reflecting, magnifying and showcasing the world's cultures. It doesn't take more than a fifth-grade education to understand them. :) Jax

Friend YOTA...

And that's what will be the deciding factor....

Our Military personnel, Sheriffs, Police CANNOT turn on their own fellow Americans.

We're the most Patriotic, well-informed group in this country.

Commie troops are usually igorant masses from the peasant classes created by and ground under by their governments.

We wouldn't stand for it, even though obummer is trying to do that to us as we speak.

We asked the Deputy next door if he and his ilk could come over here to our house and shoot us in the face.

He said "no...".

Went on to explain that there is a line of tolerance when following orders.

That he and his fellow officers believe that is one order they would disobey.

Military troops in countries which have fallen to the dark side are usually forced into that service.

We serve through pride, truth and the American way -- justice for all.

We're not too worried about our fellow Patriots firing on us.

Like the Deputy said.. there's that line... and it's Red, White & Blue. <_<

Have you ever heard of Austerity Packages?....Its happening, or coming soon

to a Socialist Country near you.

Those Govt's have spent & borrowed all the money they are going to get, they've

driven out the wealthy & jobs with their taxes and ideas.

The Party is over for all Socialist Countries, get ready to tighten your belt, or continue

tightening.....As we know you are....Pfffft, Americans dont know whats going on in the

World..... Are you kidding? We are going to continue to be the savior of the World.

As soon as we get rid of the current Socialist.

I won't go so far as to neg you, as I believe you've a right to your own opinion. However, yes this American does mean that the U.S. under socialism proposed will become a USSR type police state - I've seen the proposals for the "camps" etc. under the auspices of FEMA etc. The preparation for civil insurrection and where to put those that won't follow the herd. It's real and coming if we allow it to happen.

Not trying to defend any particular system but how is that different from the USA. Americans on the top are fat & happy. What about the rest? Are you really saying that there are no poor people in the USA?

Until we began our slow, and now accelerating, creep to socialism, people who wanted to work could find work because so many businesses were healthy and growing and needed new employees regularly. But since socialists got in control, they blame everything on businesses because they don't want business to succeed. They want control, not freedom (for example, look at GM), and the control they are talking about is always their own. In a democracy, not all people earn the same amount of money, and for various reasons, there is always a bottom rung in the financial well-being of the society. The work of some people is just worth more to many people than is the work of others. For example, I would gladly pay my surgeon more than I would even consider paying the lady who cleans my house. And if a guy lives a few streets over and refuses to work, why should I work for him? That's what it means when I work and my pay is taxed, and then after the government takes its cut, the rest of my money is given to that guy. I don't mind paying for a government office that uses some of my money to help my neighbor who is sick or hurt and can't work, but I think it would be cheaper for me, and more cost effiicient for all of us, plus would help that guy more, if I could cut out the government altogether, and simply joined other working people in my town to help this guy without any interference from a nosy, hands-in-my-pockets government. As Jesus said, "The poor shall be with you always," and so far, He's been right. They are always there. But I notice that Jesus didn't say to establish a government taxing system to help the poor among us. He admonished all of us to do it. Oh, and one more thing--If I am working and can feed my family and give them a roof over their heads, I am probably fatter, at least metaphorically, and thus, happier than the guy who doesn't work. In other words, I have more of the world's goods because I contribute a good or a service in return. People who don't work don't provide anything that has a value to their community. Providing a value or not has a powerful repurcussion. The community, as the receiver of your product or service, assigns your product or service a value, and you receive that value. To quote my little grandson, "So dat why." The end. lol

Brazil, Cuba, and even England, to name a few.

End Quote

I happened to spend time in all 3 countries you mentioned... While it's true that Cuba is still socialist with slight attempts to opening up to the private sector.....Brazil appears to be very capitalist and seemingly the Gov't is trying to make a positive change ( epic task in that country) on helping the poorer layers of population...They have a lot of issues there as it's known ....The economy is growing, though......Cost of living increased scaringly in the last 10 years in Brazil.

England I haven't been for a few years so I won't comment.. In 2008 it looked still capitalist to me anyway.
