Sulaimaniyah demonstrators have handed a communiqué to the parliamentary committee giving the parliament and government 48 hours to respond to their demands or risk a general strike all over the city. The parliamentary committee looking into the demands of the demonstrators in Sulaimaniyah is expected to submit its report to the parliament speaker Wednesday. However, head of the committee says the parliament session will not be dedicated to discussing the report but a symbolic session to resume regular meetings after recess. The demonstrators have threatened a general strike all over Sulaimaniyah if the government fails to meet their demands as the 48 hours period expires. Since the Feb. 17 protests, some 7 people have been killed and over 100 injured in clashes between the protests and security forces. Other fundamental demands include the summoning of the ministers of the interior and Peshmarga affairs in addition to the prime minister to parliament for accountability over the incidents. Inquiry into, and disclosure of, the assets of the officials, a cut in the salaries of the MPS, ministers and high-ranking government officials are also among the fundamental demands. “those demands are all in favor of the citizens and the different facets of the Kurdish society,” says Faruq the member of the higher committee for demonstrators, “we are waiting for the reply of the parliament and government to see to what extent they are ready to accept our demands. Baghdad opened a commercial debt buyback program four years ago and said it would qualify claimants for a cash buyback of 10.5% of the outstanding amount for debts less than $35 million, Mudher Kasim, the senior advisor of the central bank of Iraq, told Dow Jones Newswires in a telephone interview from Baghdad. Kasim added that for debts of more than $35 million, the government has offered bonds carrying a 7.5% interest rate. He said more than 13,000 claimants have so far participated in the program and a total of $2.7 billion worth of bonds have been issued. The bonds mature in 2028 but start to pay back the principle from 2020, he added. The terms of the program were comparable to the terms of Iraq’s 2004 Paris Club deal, he said. Iraq emerged from the U.S.-invasion in 2003 with around $200 billion in debt and war reparations to compensate for its 1990 invasion of Kuwait. Five percent of Iraq’s oil revenue still goes toward war reparations. The Paris Club of 19 rich creditor nations agreed in 2004 to write off 80% of its $40 billion debt to Iraq. Iraq still owes government-to-government debt, including to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, as well as some $50 billion in war reparations to Kuwait, of which Iraq already paid $28 billion. The latest nation, outside the Paris Club, to write off Iraq’s debt was China when it cancelled some $8 billion of Iraq’s debt. The United Arab Emirates waived $7 billion of Iraqi debt and Russia wrote off $12.9 billion in 2008. Romania forgave $2 billion out of $2.5 billion owed by Iraq. The Iraqi government recently urged the central bank and other governmental entities to settle commercial debts in a bid to protect its money from foreign claims as the U.N. Security Council adopted a decision in November last year lifting its protection of Iraqi funds deposited outside Iraq at the end of June 2011. The government has also asked the central bank to open accounts before May 1 to transfer funds from the U.N.-mandated Development Fund for Iraq, or DFI. The DFI, which was set up after the 2003 war to handle oil and other revenues, has been protected against claims by a U.N. resolution that expires on June 30. Jim1cor13
If you listen to DD's radio tidbits he JUST voted Bondlady to be the liar of the week. So I don't know who to believe now. Hi BANE I was glad to 'see' you as I was just wondering how you have been doing. Thanks for your post. I think it is obvious that it is much healthier to not follow or "believe" any of the rumor folks. There is no benefit in it in my opinion as it carries little weight in reality. Between the silly rates and hype, it benefits no one. The best source of information for anyone is CBI.IQ and they post the actual rate if/when it occurs as we all hope it does. I think many could avoid frustration if they stopped paying attention to the rumor mill and started paying attention to what actual news and articles one can find in addition to the great efforts by many here to post meaningful articles and news. It should be evident after so many years, that none of these folks have solid sources of news or legitimate details. Mr. Shabibbi is not going around and telling people what the rate is and neither is anyone else, because there is yet to be any other rate than 1170 officially. So thanks for your thoughts and try not to follow anyones rumors because it does nothing except telling people what they want to hear, not necessarily what they NEED to be hearing, which of course is factual details. Theories and hype have yet to bring about any change, but they sure have helped dealers sell millions of IQD. Let's hope for the best, but be aware that most of the 'talkers' do not have your best interests at heart. there are a few that certainly are helpful and they perform much research and study, and the honest ones will admit what the others never admit...they do NOT know. Good to see you post and I hope you are well All my best! Jim ---
