Two security sources confirmed today, Friday, that a Katyusha missile targeted the residence of the employees of the Emirati company Dana Gas in the Khor Mor field in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Iraq.

Friday's attack is the second on a Dana Gas facility this week, as the Anti-Terrorism Service in Sulaymaniyah announced, last Wednesday, the fall of a Katyusha missile inside the Khor Mordoun field, causing any damage.

Footage broadcast by local television stations today showed a column of smoke rising near the field and sirens could be heard.
There were no reports of possible casualties due to the attack.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for either of the attacks. And armed groups that Iraqi officials said were backed by Iran had claimed responsibility for similar attacks before.

Dana Gas said yesterday, Thursday, that operations are continuing as normal in Khor Mor, one of the largest gas fields in Iraq.

Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - A member of the Political Bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Hoshyar Zebari, accused today, Friday, "militia forces" of trying to bring the Kurdistan Region to its knees.

1656083313danagass.jpg

This came in his commentary on the missile bombing that targeted the Khormore field, where the headquarters of the Emirati Dana Gas Company is located in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate.

The attack on a facility belonging to the Dana Gas Company is the second this week, as the company's vicinity - where the Khormore field is located - was subjected to a similar attack two days ago.

This was preceded by repeated attacks on an oil well in the town of Khabat, west of Erbil. These attacks did not result in casualties or damage.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the two attacks, but the Kurdistan Region often blames "outlaws" Iraqi groups.

Zebari wrote on his Twitter account, saying that these attacks show that "the militia forces in Baghdad do not differentiate between the two provinces," referring to Erbil and Sulaymaniyah.

Zebari said that the aim of these groups is to "subjugate" the Kurdistan Region to its sultan.

And the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, has previously said that outlaw groups target the region's economic infrastructure.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Natural Resources said that it had formed a joint operations room with the UAE company Dana Gas, after the two Katyusha attacks.

Operations in the Kurdistan Region's fields were not affected despite these attacks.

After the missile attacks, a meeting headed by Qubad Talabani in the Kormore gas field in Sulaymaniyah

Baghdad - people

Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, accompanied by the Acting Ministers of Peshmerga and Natural Resources and other security officials in the Kurdistan Region, visited the Kormore gas field and met with officials of the Dana Gas Company.

The Ministry of Natural Resources in the Kurdistan Region stated in a statement that "Nass" received a copy of it (June 26, 2022), that "the meeting, which was attended by the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, discussed the missile attacks on the Kormore gas field project."

According to the statement, Talabani stressed that they are "working to protect the lives of employees in the field, and will not prevent the movement of employees, and are following up with the Iraqi authorities to prevent such attacks."

The meeting stressed that "the attack will not have any impact on the production of natural gas and liquid gas and the needs of citizens."

Yesterday, the Kormore gas field between the provinces of Sulaymaniyah and Kirkuk was subjected to a missile attack, the third in days.

There were no reports of casualties, while it was not clear the extent of the damage caused by the attack.

The gas field belonging to the UAE company Dana Gas was attacked by a missile.

The Pearl Consortium and the Emirati energy company Dana Gas own the rights to exploit the Khor Mor and Chemchemal fields, two of the largest gas fields in Iraq.

No group has claimed responsibility for these attacks, but accusations are usually directed against armed groups, which have previously claimed responsibility for similar attacks.

The Emirati company started its work in the field in 2007, through its contract with the Kurdistan Regional Government.

A few days ago, the Kurdish authorities in the region began a remarkable movement to push the gas export project to the fore, after Ukrainian gas exports to Europe faltered, making the road impassable in front of this path, especially since Turkey will be the gateway to crossing this pipeline.

Official data issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources indicate that the Kurdistan Region possesses 5.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, while sources indicate that 3% of the world's natural gas reserves are located in the Kurdistan Region, and it is estimated at (100-200) trillion cubic feet. The Khurmala and Khormour fields are among the largest gas fields in the Kurdistan Region.

Many gas fields are located in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate, such as the Khormor field, the Chamchamal field, the Miran field, and the Balkanah field.

Shafaq News/ "Dana Gas" company announced that there were no injuries or damage, as a result of two small rockets falling in the Khormore concession area in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, on Friday and Saturday, and the continuation of production operations normally and without any interruption.

The Emirati "Dana Gas" company, according to an agreement concluded in 2007, with the authorities of the Kurdistan Region, produces, markets and sells oil and natural gas from the Kormor and Chemchemal fields in the region.

The company also stated in a statement, the temporary suspension of work on the Khormore 250 (KM250) expansion project while implementing the necessary security improvements.

The company explained that it is coordinating directly with the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, which has shown strong support for the company with the Iraqi government.

The company confirmed that the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq has taken all necessary measures to enhance security measures in Khor Mor, including the transfer of more armed forces to protect facilities and facilities in the region.

Yesterday, Sunday, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, announced the internationalization of the file of repeated missile attacks on the Kurdistan Region, in the first reaction of its kind.

"He spoke with White House Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Brett McGurk, our American friends and every investor must remain committed, not succumbing to fear," he said in a statement. Erbil and Baghdad and finding ways for us both to protect against further terrorist attacks."

In recent weeks, fuel production sites in the Kurdistan Region were targeted with rocket propelled grenades, whose launch no one claimed.

The first missile targeting occurred in April, then in May it targeted the Kurgosk oil refinery, one of the largest refineries in the oil-rich region northwest of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

Earlier on Sunday, the US State Department condemned the recent attack on the Kormore gas field in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate in the Kurdistan Region.

The Emirati "Dana Gas" company, according to an agreement concluded in 2007, with the authorities of the Kurdistan Region, produces, markets and sells oil and natural gas from the Kormor and Chemchemal fields in the region.

State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement that the United States stands with its partners in condemning the ongoing missile and mortar attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, including the three attacks on the oil and gas infrastructure in Sulaymaniyah in the past four days.

Price added that "these attacks aim to undermine economic stability, challenge Iraqi sovereignty, and sow division and intimidation," calling for "the investigation of these attacks and the prosecution of those responsible."

SULAIMANI —The aim of recent missile attacks on oil and gas companies operating in the Kurdistan Region appears to be more political than anything else.

They seem to be part of the intensified disputes between the Federal Government and the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG) over the Region's energy sector.

While Baghdad and Erbil have always contested the KRG's rights over developing and exporting its oil and gas, relations have reached a new level of complication following the federal court's ruling that deemed the Regions oil and gas law to be unconstitutional.

Since the ruling in February, multiple attacks have been carried out targeting the Kurdistan Region's oil and gas fields; most recently, the Dana Gas-operated Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani province was targeted.

In March, the KAR Group-owned Khormala oil field in Erbil province came under attack.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Army, on the one hand, and the Peshmerga forces, on the other, have mobilized forces closer to the Khormala oil field and Khor Mor gas field.

However, as Iraq's economy is booming now, thanks to rising oil prices, Baghdad does not need to seize the Region's oil.

Claim of responsibility

While no one has so far claimed responsibility for the recent attacks, a commander from Iraqi Kataib Hizbullah tweeted that a Turkish intelligence group carried out the attacks on Dana Gas in the Khurmatu district.

Local observers have pointed out that some Iraqi forces might be using the attacks as a pressure card on the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) to compromise and comply with their demands during the Iraqi government formation discussions.

Although, after the withdrawal of the Sadrist Movement, the KDP has made efforts to get closer to the Coordination Framework, however framework wants more compromise from the Kurdish political parties.

The KRG has vowed to defend its energy sector, and it is not clear yet how much impact these attacks would have on the operations of the oil and gas companies.

Today, Dana Gas announced the suspension of expansion works in its Khor Mor field following three days of attacks.

KRG's Deputy Premier Qubad Talabani has said that these attacks would not affect the production of natural gas, liquid gas and local energy supply.

According to Iraqi News Agency (INA), the US-based global energy company Schlumberger has decided to exit the Kurdistan Region following the Iraqi federal court's decision to consider the Kurdistan Region's energy sector unconstitutional.

INA also reported that US energy company Baker Hughes had also decided to comply with the federal court's ruling by exiting the Kurdistan Region.

Neither of the companies has issued statements regarding the reports.

Looks like a civil war brewing. I hadn’t envisioned a regional civil war in the Kurdish region before. I feel like such a naive American sometimes. Perhaps they can mobilize the National Iraq military…interesting developments for sure.

Fun to watch and unfold from afar, it’s been a long ride over the last 13 years. I can’t really believe I’ve been paying attention to this for that long now.
