House GOP demands FBI investigate, explain inaction on Biden allegations

House Republicans led by Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio demanded Thursday that the FBI investigate allegations unearthed by the Senate of corrupt business dealings surrounding Democratic nominee Joe Biden's family and explain what the bureau did to address the concerns when they first surfaced during the Obama administration.

Jordan, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, referred to four bombshell revelations about Hunter Biden's business dealings in a report made public Wednesday by Senate Homeland Security Chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Senate Finance Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, demanding FBI Director Chris Wray explain why there wasn't more action when the evidence first surfaced between 2014 and 2017.

"The report by Chairman Johnson and Chairman Grassley shows that the FBI has been aware of some alleged misconduct for years," Jordan wrote. "The report detailed widespread concern within the Obama-Biden Administration about Hunter Biden’s role on the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian company founded by oligarch Mykola Zlochevsky. Then-U.S. Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs, Amos Hochstein personally raised concerns to Vice President Biden and—after Vice President Biden spoke to Hunter—to Hunter Biden himself.

"In addition, senior State Department official George Kent raised concerns to the FBI about a $7 million bribe paid by Zlochevsky to Ukraine’s prosecutor general seven months after Hunter Biden joined Burisma’s board," Jordan said.

Jordan questions why Wray has not addressed the allegations, suggesting it further tarnished the bureau's reputation in the aftermath of the Russia collusion scandal.

"The FBI suffered from a pattern of misconduct and politicization at the highest levels of the FBI during the Obama-Biden Administration. The FBI used Democrat-funded opposition research and Russian disinformation—as well as doctored evidence—to illegally spy on a Trump campaign associate.The FBI sought to entrap Trump National Security Advisor LTG Michael Flynn 'to get him to lie, so we can prosecute or get him fired.' The new revelations in Chairman Johnson’s and Chairman Grassley’s report only add more concern about the FBI’s actions," Jordan wrote.

The four questions Jordan asked Wray to answer include:

• Is the FBI investigating Hunter Biden’s receipt of $3.5 million from the wife of the former mayor of Moscow? 2
• Is the FBI investigating Hunter Biden’s payment of “thousands of dollars” to individuals involved in human trafficking and organized prostitution?
• Is the FBI investigating Hunter Biden’s Chinese transactions “involving potential criminal financial activity”?
• What actions did the FBI take after George Kent made it aware of the $7 million bribe paid by Ukrainian oligarch Mykola Zlochevsky to the Ukrainian prosecutor general?

It looks like things are getting even worse for Hunter Biden and his father, Former Vice President Joe Biden. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) stated that he will send the joint Senate report on Hunter Biden to the Justice Department where lawyers can review it for potential criminal activity. 

In a Wednesday appearance on Fox News’ “The Story,” the senator explained his reasoning for forwarding the report to the Department of Justice. “I think riding on Air Force Two and doing business is illegal, I think that is against the law and probably a felony. I think it’s illegal to take money from a Russian politician’s wife, $3.5 million, was it reported accurately?” he said. 

Paul continued, “I think the only way to determine the actual legality of this is to have it referred to the Department of Justice, so I’m gonna send the report over. I don’t know if the whole committee will vote for it but I’m sending the report tomorrow, to the Department of Justice, and we’re asking for a criminal referral.”

The senator is a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Oversight Committee, which, along with two other committees, investigated Hunter Biden’s ties to Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company. While his father was serving as vice president, Hunter Biden was given a position on the company’s board of directors and a hefty salary despite having no experience in the energy sector. This situation raised quite a few eyebrows when the information surfaced last year during the impeachment process. 

The interim report that was publicized on Wednesday revealed that Hunter Biden participated in “questionable financial transactions” with associates and foreign individuals. One of these exchanges occurred with the wife of a former mayor of Moscow. Others involved people with ties to the Chinese Communist Party. Some of his activities involved a connection to human trafficking. 

Democrats have cried foul at the release of the report, which they claim is a politically-motivated investigation. Biden campaign spokesman Andrew Bates asserted that the probe was subsidizing “a foreign attack against the sovereignty of our elections with taxpayer dollars — and attack founded on a long-disproven, hardcore right-wing conspiracy theory that hinges on Sen. [Ron] Johnson himself being corrupt and that the senator has now explicitly stated he is attempting to exploit to bail out Donald Trump’s reelection campaign.” 

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) also complained about the report, stating that “the Kremlin must be very pleased.” 

Nevertheless, it appears that Hunter Biden is not off the hook just yet. While it has not yet been established that he engaged in criminal activity, it is clear that there is smoke here. But will it be enough for a criminal case?

Aspects of U.S. Attorney John Huber’s investigation into the Clinton Foundation have been assumed by U.S. Attorney John Durham as part of his review into the origins of the Russia probe, Fox News has learned.

A source familiar with Durham’s investigation told Fox News on Thursday that parts of what Huber was investigating in 2017 -- involving the Clinton Foundation -- have been incorporated in Durham’s investigation.

FLASHBACK: SESSIONS DIRECTS JOHN HUBER TO 'EVALUATE CERTAIN ISSUES' INVOLVING URANIUM ONE, CLINTON FOUNDATION

In November 2017, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions directed Huber, the U.S. attorney for Utah, and other senior prosecutors to evaluate “certain issues” involving the sale of Uranium One, and other dealings related to the Clinton Foundation. Sessions tapped Huber after requests by congressional Republicans, who had been calling for the appointment of a special counsel to review the matters.

 

Sessions revealed that he asked U.S. Attorney John Huber, seen here, to look into the accusations.

Huber was also tasked with reviewing the FBI’s handling of the Clinton email probe, including allegations that the Justice Department and FBI “policies or procedures” were not followed.

It has been unclear, for years, the status of Huber's investigation, but another source told Fox News Thursday that Huber has faced mounting criticism from the Justice Department and White House over his progress.

"There are folks that are aware of the fact that Huber has not done much, and there has been criticism at the Justice Department and the White House," the source said. "Folks that have been concerned about what he did or didn't do, and many of them feel that Huber did not dig deep enough or work hard enough."

The source added that many are "very concerned about why there hadn't been more done."

The New York Times on Thursday first reported that Durham has focused attention on the Clintons, and said that Durham has sought documents and interviews about how federal law enforcement officials handled an investigation into allegations of political corruption at the Clinton Foundation.

DOJ INVESTIGATES THE INVESTIGATORS: 5 INTERNAL PROBES UNDERWAY ON RUSSIA AND MORE

Durham was appointed by Attorney General Barr last year to investigate the origins of the FBI’s Russia probe shortly after Mueller completed his yearslong investigation into whether the campaign colluded with the Russians to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Durham’s timeline has been focused on July 2016, when the FBI’s original Russia probe began, through the appointment of Mueller in May 2017.

Durham’s investigation has been slowed by the coronavirus pandemic, but that has not blunted the level of anticipation from President Trump, his Republican allies on Capitol Hill and his supporters, some of whom have called for findings to be released before November's presidential election.

Speculation over the status of Durham's review into the origins of the Russia probe has only intensified amid the resignation of a top aide earlier this month, Norah Dannehy, and comments from congressional Republicans suggesting developments could soon be announced.

Dannehy, a top aide to Durham, resigned Friday, after working closely with the U.S. attorney for Connecticut for years. Durham’s office confirmed her departure but did not elaborate on the backstory.

DURHAM SPECULATION REACHING FEVER PITCH 

Earlier this month, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., hinted that developments in Durham’s investigation were on the horizon. This was after newly released Justice Department records showed numerous phones belonging to members of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team were wiped of information because of forgotten passcodes, irreparable screen damage, loss of the device, intentional deletion or other reasons—all before the Justice Department inspector general’s office could review the devices.

“You think you are mad about the phones being wiped?” Graham said on Fox News' “Hannity” last week. “Stay tuned.”

He added: “We’ll talk in about 10 or 12 days and we’ll see if there is something else you can get mad about.”

The investigation has produced one criminal charge so far, against former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith, who was accused of altering an email related to the surveillance of a former Trump campaign aide. But that prosecution did not allege a broader conspiracy within the FBI, and the conduct it involved had largely been laid out in a Justice Department inspector general report from last December.

It is not clear if Durham will be able to conclude his work before the election, though Barr has not ruled out the possibility of additional criminal charges.

Barr, during an interview with NBC News last week, said that there “could be” more charges stemming from Durham's review.

“Yeah, there could be,” Barr said while declining to say whether any such charges would be announced prior to Election Day.

In July, though, Fox News reported that Durham could wait to reveal his findings or initiate further prosecutions until after the 2020 presidential election.

Two sources familiar with Durham’s investigation told Fox News at the time that Durham was working expeditiously to try to finish the probe before Labor Day — which he did not — but that several lines of the investigation had not yet been completed.

“He believes it’s critical to do them,” one source said at the time. “He is feeling more pressure to get this done and wrapped up.”

The source also told Fox News that Durham “does not want this to be viewed political,” and the closer it gets to November, Durham could “punt it to after the election.”

Investigators Recover Discarded Pro-Trump Military Ballots

Nine discarded military ballots have been recovered as part of a federal investigation in Luzerne County.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation working together with the Pennsylvania State Police have confirmed to Eyewitness News that they have recovered physical evidence of issues with a small number of ballots.

Officials say that a small number of military ballots have been improperly discarded, nine of which have been recovered. It is not yet clear if there are more that have not yet been recovered by investigators.

Some of the ballots can be attributed to specific voters while others cannot. All nine of the recovered ballots were cast for Donald Trump.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal similarly tweeted: “If Republicans recklessly & reprehensibly force a SCOTUS vote before the election—nothing is off the table.”

Why it matters: Democrats are enraged by GOP hypocrisy of rushing through a new justice for President Trump after stalling President Obama’s final nominee.

• Dems aren’t optimistic about blocking the nominee. But they have many ways of retaliating if they win Senate control — and are licking their chops about real movement on ideas that have been pushed futilely for decades.

Seriously. I agree with a lot of the things you post. I just don't agree with our leader throwing delusional spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks in order to create chaos... I just wish he spent his time on real solutions. Where's that healthcare plan he was going to have on day one to reduce my costs from Obamacare? I thought he was going to repeal the Alternative Tax. What about balancing the Federal Budget fairly quickly? And he said he would enact term limits... These are his campaign promises from 2016 and 2017 after being elected... He hasn't delivered and that's why I cannot vote for him. I didn't vote for him or Clinton last time they were both full of hot air. Jmho

So Trump, out of umpteen thousand campaign promise that he has filled, hasn't filled the one campaign promise to you. Yeah, Trump doesn't deserve to be re-elected. But wait you didn't vote for him in the first place. Dija vote t'all? Let's just forget the RINO repubes that took up breathing space during the first two years of Trump's Presidency.
