ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has told Iraq’s Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi to ensure American soldiers leave the country “as soon as possible,” Iranian state media reported on Saturday.

“You must make sure that the Americans withdraw their troops from Iraq as soon as possible because expelling them has become difficult whenever they have had a long military presence in a country,” state media Mehr News Agency quoted Khamenei as saying.

The call was made in a meeting between Iran’s top leader and the Iraqi prime minister who arrived in Tehran on Saturday, the first visit to the neighboring country since he took office in October of 2018.

His trip comes at the invitation of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who met with the Iraqi leader shortly after his arrival in Iran’s capital.

The US’ presence in Iraq has been a hot topic in recent months. Influential political figures, including leaders of the Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq – Shia militias that arose to fight the Islamic State – are now increasingly calling on US troops to leave the country.

An Iraqi foreign ministry official told Kurdistan 24 in a previous interview that the US military presence does not involve combat troops, but “only military advisors and trainers, who are helping our army.”

American troops in Iraq – numbered at around 6,000 by Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi – have been and continue to provide training and counseling to Iraq’s security forces and the Kurdish Peshmerga in the fight against the terrorist organization.

Special: Translation - سعد عبدالعزيز:

The Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying that the United States plans to include Iran's Revolutionary Guards on its terrorism list.

John Bolton and US Secretary of State Mike Pompio strongly support the move to damage the "Revolutionary Guard" deals and projects in Europe and elsewhere.

May harm the security of US forces ..

But other US officials at the Pentagon, led by Chief of Staff Gusev Danford, warn that such action could harm the security of US forces in the Middle East without the damage to Iran's economy. The Revolutionary Guard is on the terrorism list.5ca7d240d43750c02c8b4647-e1554647116102.

According to the newspaper, the US Central Command, which is responsible for the forces stationed in the Middle East, intends to issue a statement to warn US soldiers in the region, so that they take all security measures, because the action, which will be provided by "Washington" will push the Iranian forces, , To launch attacks against US forces.

Monitoring the activities of the Revolutionary Guards.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has been monitoring the movements and activities of the Revolutionary Guards militia, which is part of the Iranian army, and is loyal to the regime in Tehran.

The Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guard has been supporting and arming Shiite militias loyal to Iran in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East. The Quds Force was also involved in the Iranian nuclear program.

"Trump" supports "Netanyahu" ahead of the elections ..

Iranian analysts believe that what the current US administration is doing, especially at this time, is in support of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the Israeli elections.

The US president, Donald Trump, has taken measures to support Netanyahu, such as recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Where the Iranian expert on Middle East, "Sayed Jaafar Qandad Bashi," that the goal of "Washington" to recognize the sovereignty of "Israel" on the "Golan Heights" is to support "Netanyahu" ahead of the Israeli parliamentary elections, where Netanyahu is facing difficult circumstances currently , After being accused of corruption and dishonesty, in addition to that he and his government is heavily criticized within "Israel".

And because Netanyahu's chance to win this election is slim after accusing him of corruption, President Trump strongly supports him to win and remain in office.

Satanism of "Iran" and "axis of resistance" ..bbd184ebbc151bc273b62f437a868b1e-e155464

On the question of whether the approach of "Iran" and "axis of resistance" of the Israeli border; has prompted "Washington" to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the "Golan"? .. The Iranian expert that the "America" and "Israel", strong media influence, has In an attempt to discredit Iran, demonize Hezbollah and all elements of the "axis of resistance," all of whom were described as refusing to achieve peace and security in the region.

The pro-Washington and Tel Aviv media sought to solidify the impression that Iran posed a serious threat to Israel and the region's states. Therefore, Israeli sovereignty over the Golan was justified to thwart the so-called Iranian threat.

Israeli military capability

The Iranian expert stressed that all attempts to "Israel", to consolidate its occupation of the "Golan" Syria, will not succeed in the end, noting that the conditions of "Israel", at the time of foreclosure, are very different from what it was several decades ago.

Perhaps the "Zionist entity", in the past, has the ability to establish its sovereignty over the occupied territories using military force and achieve victory in some battles and wars.

In recent years, however, the Israeli army has suffered successive defeats in its wars against the resistance movements, which indicates a decline in Israeli military capability, which means that the Israelis will not be able to assert their sovereignty over the occupied territories by force.

Iraq stands by Iran amid US Sanctions against military presence

image.png

Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi visited Tehran over the weekend and assured Iran over US sanctions against its military presence, Asharq Al-Awsat reported.

On the sidelines of his Sunday meeting with his Iraqi counterpart, Chief of General Staff Mohammad Bagheri said Iraq has guaranteed for Tehran that the presence of the US troops is merely restricted to training Iraqi forces and they are doing their job under the control of the Iraqi military force.

In the first Iraqi response to Iranian Revolution leader Ali Khamenei’s calls last Saturday calling on Baghdad to expel US forces immediately, Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Othman al-Ghanimi said US troops would stay in Iraq, but he reassured the Iranian side that their presence is part of training Iraqi forces.

Ghanimi is part of an Iraqi delegation visiting Iran, one month following the visit of President Hassan Rouhani to Baghdad.

Later, a statement issued Sunday by the Prime Minister's office told Iran´s Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri, “Iraq was not part of the sanctions system imposed on Iran.”

The PM was keen on addressing a clear message to the Iranian side when he reaffirmed his country's sovereignty and that Iraq is in a position of "being open" towards all its neighboring countries to build a stable region

The Iraqi PM said he would work on placing his country in its suitable place in the Arab and Islamic world. He denied his country's support of an axis or aggression policy against any state.

Meanwhile, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh uncovered Sunday that Iran and Iraq have reached an understanding about developing two oilfields on their mutual border.

Media reports said last week the United States would designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization and confirmed that President Donald Trump’s administration would announce the decision as s
oon as Monday and that concerned defense officials were bracing for the impact.

Three important considerations to visit Abdul Mahdi to Iran

Translation: Anis al - Saffar
visited Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul - Mahdi Tehran during the period from 6 to 7 Nissan, this was his first official visit to the neighboring country since he took office in October 2018. Abdul - Mahdi , was presented to Tehran , an official invitation of Iranian President Hassan Rowhani Accompanied by a large delegation of senior Iraqi officials and representatives of the private sector. Besides meeting with Rohani, the Iraqi leader also met Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and attended a joint meeting between the Iranian and Iraqi business sectors at the Iranian Chamber of Commerce. The visit came less than a month after Rohani's visit to Iraq, which was the first visit by the Iranian president since taking office in 2013. During that visit, the two sides reached a number of important agreements, most of which focused on the economic aspects

The growing pace of high-level meetings between Iranian and Iraqi officials, as well as the busy schedule of Abdul-Mahdi during his stay in Tehran, suggests new dialogues regarding growing ties between the two neighbors. When considering the agenda of Abdul Mahdi in Iran, in addition to regional and international circumstances surrounding the visit, it can be said in fact that the visit was important for three main considerations.
The first and most important consideration is the occurrence of the visit amid mounting pressure from the United States to curtail Iranian influence in Iraq, which gives the visit symbolic effect. Although the US administration agreed on March 20 to extend Iraq's 90-day exemption from sanctions to allow it to import gas and electric power from Iran, the administration continued to pressure Baghdad to cut its reliance on Tehran for energy.
Despite this, Iraqi parliament speaker Mohamed Halaboussi said on March 30 that his country needed at least three years before achieving "economic independence". Until then, Iraq still needs to import energy. Moreover, Abdul Mahdi himself has stressed that his country is "not obliged" to obey US sanctions against Iran. One of the key paragraphs discussed during Rohani's visit to Baghdad and Abdul Mahdi's visit to Tehran was the question of bypassing sanctions through bilateral economic relations.
Aside from the sanctions, Washington has tried to discourage Iraqi officials from expanding relations with the Islamic Republic by trying to portray Iran's role in Iraq as passive and destructive. After a spiritual visit to Iraq in March, US special envoy to Iran Brian Hawk claimed Iran wanted to turn Iraq into an Iranian province. Before traveling to Tehran, Hawk said Iran was responsible for the deaths of more than 600 US troops in Iraq.
In such a climate, the Iranian media interpreted Abdul Mahdi's visit, expressing his desire to strengthen ties with the Islamic Republic, as signs of Baghdad's indifference to US positions. For example, Iran's state news agency IRNA said Iran's visit to Iran had sent a special message to the United States. Iranian First Vice President Yitzhak Jahangiri also expressed a similar view. When he meets Abdul-Mahdi on April 7, Jahangiri said: "The unambiguous message is that Tehran and Baghdad have decided to expand their relations significantly despite all the aggression of America."
The diplomatic dimension of Abdul Mahdi's visit was less important than what we mentioned. Two days before the trip, Abdul Mahdi received a high-level Saudi delegation headed by Saudi Trade Minister Majid bin Abdullah al-Kasabi. The Saudi official was not limited to reopening the Saudi consulate in Baghdad after a three-decade closure, but also to boosting economic ties, including Iraq's $ 1 billion in loans. The visit, which was a clear indication of Riyadh's desire to restore ties with Baghdad, was interpreted as aimed at curbing Iran's influence in Iraq.
Saudi magic, however, has not only failed to influence Abdul Mahdi's efforts to strengthen ties with the Islamic Republic, but has also motivated him to play the role of mediator between the two rival states. As soon as the Iraqi leader arrived in Tehran, there were media reports that an Iraqi mediation plan would be presented to Tehran. According to the reports, the plan has been under consideration since Abdul Mahdi's visit to Egypt in March and will be presented to Saudi officials during his visit to Riyadh next month.
Although neither side confirmed the report, Rohani tackled regional affairs during a joint press conference with Abdul Mahdi, a reference to which the two sides discussed during their meeting. "The situation in the region was one of the topics discussed by the two sides," Rouhani said. "We have common points of view on many issues relating to the region," he said. Based on this, it appears that Baghdad wants to exploit its good relations now with Tehran and Riyadh together to bring these two sides closer to reconciliation.
The third and most important consideration of Abdul Mahdi's visit to Tehran is the economic consideration. Economic affairs dominated the visit. Both sides expressed the desire to raise their bilateral bilateral trade to 20 billion dollars over the next three years. According to Iranian Industry, Minerals and Trade Minister Reza Rahmani, the two sides are working together to draft a free trade agreement between them. Separately, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zangana said the two countries would begin work together on developing two oilfields. According to media reports, Abdul Naseer Hamati, director of the Central Bank of Iran, will soon travel to Baghdad to personally supervise the implementation of the provisions of the financial agreements between the parties.
In the current situation, as the United States confirms its intention to pursue a policy of imposing "extreme pressures" on the Islamic Republic through economic sanctions, Iraq's approach of not complying with pressure and thus continuing its economic dealings with Iran carries significant significance for Tehran. In the meantime, as both Iran and Saudi Arabia redraw their relations with Iraq, giving greater weight to the economic side, Iran's Saudi rivalry could acquire geo-economic characteristics that gradually replace traditional geopolitical characteristics. This in turn will reduce the risk of escalation between the two sides, while at the same time facilitating Baghdad to continue its balanced foreign policy between its two strong neighbors.
