Iran, Iraq to Meet $20 Billion Trade Target in 2 Years: Minister

Speaking at a TV program on Wednesday, Rahmani stressed the need to exploit the potential of Iran and Iraq for industrial and trade cooperation.

He added that the $20-billion annual trade target that the two neighbors have set is expected to be met in the not-so-distant future.

Rahmani, who was part of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s entourage during a landmark visit to Iraq earlier this week, said the two governments have agreed to get the most out of economic opportunities by 2021.

During the presidential visit to Iraq, the two countries’ official signed five deals to promote cooperation in various fields.

The documents entail cooperation between Iran and Iraq concerning the Basra-Shalamcheh railroad project, visa facilitation for investors, cooperation in the health sector, and agreements between the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade of Iran and Ministry of Trade of Iraq, and another one in the field of oil between the petroleum ministries of the two countries.

In February, governors of the central banks of Iran and Iraq signed an agreement to develop a payment mechanism aimed at facilitating banking ties between the two neighboring countries.

A few days ago, secretary of Iran-Iraq Chamber of Commerce said the obstacles to banking interaction between the two neighbors have been settled and the bilateral trade exchange is fairly normal.

He said a large number of technical and engineering projects worth 7 to 8 billion dollars which Iranian private sector companies were carrying out in Iraq have remained unfinished since the rise of the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group in 2014.

The United States extended the period of exemption for Iraq from its sanctions against Iran.
"The administration of President Donald Trump has extended the deadline to exempt Iraq from complying with US sanctions against Iran for another three months," a US State Department source told CNBC.
On November 4, 2018, the United States began imposing sanctions on Iran, which is rich in oil under tough economic conditions.
The United States has lifted sanctions on Iran after reaching an agreement on Iran's nuclear program in 2015.
US sanctions include various economic, financial and industrial sectors, especially the oil sector, which is the main source of income for hard currency needed by Iran.
Washington has said it seeks to make Iran's oil exports zero.
The new US exemption comes a week after Iranian President Hassan Rowhani visited Iraq at the head of a high-level delegation with 22 agreements and a memorandum of understanding with Baghdad.
Rohani said after the visit that "no one can affect the relationship between Iran and Iraq," a reference to America.

Iran reduced the volume of its exports to the Kurdistan Region

From before 2 hours ago

One of the commercial markets in the cities of Kurdistan Region

Roudao - Sulaymaniyah

The spokesman for the Federation of Kurdistan Investors that the economic sanctions against Iran have significant effects on the Kurdistan region also, and is expected to add Iran in the coming days new elements to the list of goods and foods that prevent export, which will increase those effects.

"Since the tightening of economic sanctions against Iran, the effects of these sanctions on the markets of the Kurdistan Region in general, and the province of Sulaymaniyah in particular, were not very clear at first, but we can say Now that it hit the market Sulaymaniyah recession, and if it continues at this pace, the Kurdistan Region will be forced to stop dealing with Iran, and will highlight these effects more clearly.

The volume of annual trade exchange between the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran is close to seven billion dollars, and 70% of this trade is carried out through the border crossing points within the borders of Sulaymaniyah province.

Mahmoud said that it is not limited to the volume of trade exchange, and we are now aware of why Iran canceled entry visas between them and the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, "the Iranians began to flow on the Kurdistan region and caused the high unemployment rate, because the work performed by the local worker for $ 500 a month , Is done by the Iranian worker for only $ 250, and companies do not occupy any workers as long as Iranian labor is available.

After the emergence of the financial crisis in the Kurdistan Region, many foreign companies returned to their country and left their work in the Kurdistan Region. A number of traders and capitalists have transferred their capital to Iran, including a trader who invested $ 1 billion there. As Mahmoud explains, these sanctions turned into a disaster for businessmen and merchants. "Some of them bought property in Tehran "We have had a project in which we lost more than $ 1 million, and in general those who went to Iran are facing great losses."

When all the doors are closed to Iran, it will have to keep a section of its goods and stop exporting them. The spokesman for the Kurdistan Investors Union says: "The goods that Iran continues to export have reduced their quality levels so that they no longer benefit. Kurds will only go towards Turkey, which will lead to higher prices. "

On the other hand, the President of the Federation of Importers and Exporters in the Kurdistan Region, Sheikh Mustafa Abdul Rahman, that the tension between Iran and America spreads concern in the markets of the Kurdistan Region, "Kurdish traders have been in the past contracts contracts ranging between one and three years with Iranian merchants and factories, but Now they have contracts ranging from one to three months for fear of bankruptcy and closure of these factories. "

"Iranian factories no longer have the same production capacity, because raw materials, not agricultural products, were often imported from outside Iran," he said. "Factories are losing as a result of the ban on imports of these raw materials and the exchange rate of the Iranian riyal."

Over the past two years, more than $ 100 million of Kurdish traders' money was confiscated by Iranian merchants and the money was not returned to their owners. When Iranian Foreign Minister Suleiman al-Sulaymaniyah visited, he promised to solve the problem, but no part of the money was returned to the owners.

"Traders are not transferring funds to Iran through banks and remittance offices, they are paying directly, and they are not sending their money to Iran unless they are sure they are fully guarded," he said.

Iran to Set Up Financial Channel to Return Exports Revenues from Iraq

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian economic official announced that his country will launch a special financial channel to return the revenues from exports to Iraq.

Secretary General of Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce Seyed Hamid Hosseini made the remarks on Wednesday.

Talks are underway for the exemption of outsourcing currency of exporters of fresh fruits and vegetables, he added.

Asked how exports revenues are to be brought back home in the current year, Hosseini said, “Following the coordination made with the governor of Central Bank of Iran, we are seeking to launch a different financial channel for inflowing currency obtained from exports to Iraq.

Also, it was agreed that Iranian exporters of products to Iraq make use of services provided by Iranian banks in neighboring Iraq, he said.

Iraqi Power Minister Luay al-Khateeb announced earlier this month that Baghdad had informed the US that it would not comply with the US’ unilateral sanctions against Tehran as the Arab country still needed Iran’s gas and electricity.

Al-Khateeb said in response to US demand to cut oil and gas imports from Iran that his country would need them for at least three years.

Talking to Iraqi media outlets, he reiterated that Iraq would need two or three years to achieve self-sufficiency in the field, which would be possible only if big projects were implemented.

“Iraq has told the Americans it currently needs to import gas and electricity from Iran, as it is importing close to 1,200 megawatts of electricity as well as gas for generating 2,800 megawatts of electricity from the country,” al-Khateeb said.

If the big projects were executed within the next two or three years, “we will need no imports from Iran”, he said
