Real men do wear pinky rings. Sorry TomInVegas.

I think Male Canadian Engineers are REAL MEN!

The Iron Ring is a ring worn by many Canadian-trained engineers, as a symbol and reminder of the obligations and ethicsassociated with their profession. From a concept originated in 1922,[1] the ring is presented to graduates in a closed ceremony known as The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer,[2][3] developed with the assistance of English poet Rudyard Kipling.[2]

The ring symbolizes the pride which engineers have in their profession, while simultaneously reminding them of their humility. The ring serves as a reminder to the engineer and others of the engineer's obligation to live by a high standard of professional conduct. It is not a symbol of qualification as an engineer – this is determined by the provincial and territorial licensing bodies.[4]

I only have a laminated pocket card I have to get every year to show I am a current Licensed Professional Engineer in the State where I reside in the US.

However, there does appear to be a similar practice, albeit newer, to the Canadians in the US:

The first ceremony was held on June 4, 1970 at Cleveland State University. Since then, similar ceremonies have been held across the United States at which graduate and registered engineers are invited to accept the Obligation of the Engineer and a stainless steel ring. The ceremonies are conducted by Links (local sections) of the Order.

Maybe, in Abadi's case, this also symbolizes Abadi's intent to the obligations and ethics associated with the position he holds. That is a very positive indicator! Abadi does hold an Electrical Engineering degree from the University Of Technology in Baghdad with a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manchester while either or both may have or have had a similar tradition to the Canadians with regard to the pinky ring.

Al-Abadi's father was a member of the Baghdad Neurosurgery Hospital and Inspector General of the Iraqi Ministry of Health but was forced to retire in 1979 due to disagreements with the Ba'ath regime and was buried abroad after his death.[3] Al-Abadi, who speaks English, graduated high school in 1970 from the Central High School (Arabic: الإعدادية المركزية‎) in Baghdad.[4] In 1975, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Technology in Baghdad.[5] In 1980, he earned a PhD degree in Electrical engineering from the University of Manchester.[6]

Indications of affiliation or conveying messagesEdit

At times, pinky rings have been worn with the intent to convey a message or indicate affiliation. During the Victorian era, both single men and women uninterested in pursuing marriage could wear a ring on the little finger of their left hand.[5] Especially in the United States, pinky rings also developed an association with criminal activity.[6] Grifters were thought to wear such rings, sometimes to provide their associates with a source of funding for their funeral expenses in case of their death,[7] as were made men in the American Mafia.[8] Movies such as Little Caesar and The Godfather contributed to the association of this style of jewellery with organized crime.[9]

Pictures of Maliki and his pinky ring are all over the internet. Is he an honest man of integrity too? The pinky ring has always had negative connotations and always will. It doesn’t belong in public service unless you’re in a third world country and don’t know any better. Obviously Abadi doesn’t.
